Notes for J
URY (GEORGE) MORRIS:
The Morris family of early New York was in the area from at least 1671 or before. Many members of the family have tried to prove that they are related to the Lewis Morris family, the signer of the Declaration of Independence proof was found by other early researchers. Several members of the family have researched the genealogies of the SIGNERS at the Filson club in Louisville,Kentucky and have not found any evidence to support that claim. This idea of being related to a signer has come from all sides, with unconnected families right down to the present. Now, I believe we have solved the mystery, and this came via a correspondent, Mr Barrie Clifford, of Oxfordshire, England. He sent me a chart which his family in England has explaining the relationship. Mr. Clifford is related also . It seems that indeed we were all looking for a direct Morris line, but it coming down via the Santvoord line. A Mary Walton married Lewis Morris, a signer, and she is indeed a cousin to all the Morris family descending from the Santvoords. I have attached a chart in this booklet to explain. My own great great grandfather named a child Grouvenuer Morris, which also seems to give some thought to the knowledge. Although Mr. Benjamin Proctor Holmes, whose mother was Catherine Morris, says he is definitely related to Lewis and Grouvenuer. Unless they knew something more about our Morris line, then I suspect the cousin connection is correct. But at least now we have some reasoning for all the information handed down via the different branches of the family.

Among the first settlers of Hudson and Bergen Counties, New Jersey, there is a Jury Maris, who is designated as English on the records. It was thought that he was the common ancestor of this Morris family. Jury is the dutch name for George and Maris became Morris for all the descendants very early.

Since Jury Maris is listed as English we can assume that he was no doubt George Morris, an Englishman, living in the area. I have my concerns about this name,as only one of the immediate family of Jury Maris names a child Jury or George, nor is the name George ever used later by an descendant that we can find. This is unusual in the early family naming patterns. Further research may at sometime turn up more information on this Jury Maris. There is a thought that maybe Jury was the son of John Morris and wife Marretje Hermans who were married in the correct time. Notice the second daughter was names Marritje and the first son was Jan(John)Morris which would follow the Dutch naming pattern Jury Maris is listed as owning land at "North West Hook" and also land in Shallenberge, N.J., and most of his children were born in that area. It would seem that the Maris family had settled in the Scharfenberg area.. We also find him living in Burlington County and some children marrying there. Sometime before 1694, Jury Maris married Frena Hanse Hardy, daughter of Hanse Harty from Berne, Switzerland and Geertje Lambertse Mol of New York. Frena was born probably about 1667-8. There is also a Geroge Morris listed in the ThirdC0. of Col. Thomas Ffarmer's regiment in 1714, and this could very well be the subject of our article. Frena and Jury had 14 children. The baptism of Jorisum Maurits to Jan Maruits-England and Marretje Hermans April 5 1662 might well be this person.

The book Bergen Co NJ Deed Record 1689-1801 pub 1900 Republic 1997 lists Jury Morris selling land in Hackensack in 1704,1721, 1717. So he was still alive in 1721 . Listed as a Brewer and Yeoman.\\
