Ancestors of Nellie Pearl Kunkel

Generation No. 4

      8. Michael Kunkel Sr., born February 12, 1784 in Springfield, York Co., PA; died Abt. December 1846 in Jackson Twp., Crawford Co., OH. He was the son of 16. Johan Hynurich Kunkel and 17. Elizabeth Christina Kleinfelter. He married 9. Anna Catherine Sentz 1815 in York Co., PA.

      9. Anna Catherine Sentz, born April 01, 1791 in York Co., PA; died June 13, 1870 in Bluffton, Wells Co., IN. She was the daughter of 18. Johann Peter Sentz and 19. Catharine ---.

Notes for Michael Kunkel Sr.:
His Sponsor was Johan Michael Kunkel.
The Birth and Baptismal Records of Shuster's Union Church indicate
that the sponsors of Michael were his aunt and uncle, Michael and
Justina Kunkel. The 1810 Census Index lists a Michael Kunkle living in
Hopewell Township of York County. It shows both he and his wife's age
as between 26 and 45, and two sons under the age of ten. This would
indicate that he and Elizabeth had two sons in addition to Henry, who
was not born until 1814. (M252, roll 57, p.170).
York County Deed Book 3B, page 435 shows that on 28 February 1817,
Michael Kunkle of Hopewell Township and his wife Katharine sold to
Peter Sentz for $3,000 a tract of 167 acres and 94 perches in Hopewell
Township. It was the same tract purchased 24 March 1810 from Conrad
Miller. Deed Book 3F, page 146, shows that on 6 April 1821, Michael
Kunkel of Shrewsbury Township and wife Catharine granted to Peter
Ehrman in trust for the grantor's minor issue Michael, Elizabeth and
Samuel: (a) 10 acres 32 perches, (b) 10 acres 73 perches and (c) 1
acre 5 perches, all in York Township, sold to Michael and Catharine on
16 February 1821 by the estate of Michael Riley.
Michael Kunkle moved to Richland County, Ohio, in about 1825; perhaps
earlier as he is not listed in the 1820 Pennsylvania Census Index.
There he purchased a tract of unimproved land and through his efforts
and well directed energies the same was soon transformed into a
splendid piece of real estate.
A York County, PA, deed (Deed Book 3K, page 154) notes that Michael
Kunkel of Richland County, Ohio, legatee of Henry Kunkel, executed a
release to the decedent's executors. Later, on 22 October 1832 (Deed
Book 3N, page 105), Michael Kunkle of Richland County, Ohio, executed
a power of attorney to George Heise to collect sums due from the
estate of Michael Klinefelter.
His death occurred in Crawford County in 1846, when he was past 70
years of age. His personal property was valued at $97.47 by an
inventory performed on December 30, 1846. His most valuable possession
was "one black mare" inventoried at $35. Next were a cow and a bureau
at $6 each. A gaggle of geese was itemized at ten cents each. His
estate was recorded and filed on June 22, 1847 and listed him as late
of Jackson Township, Crawford County, Ohio. Grain and meat valued at
$60.32 was let off for the support of Cathrine Kunkle, his widow, and
Polly Dianah and Rebeca, his minor children.
Michael and Cathrine Kunkle were active members of the Lutheran
Church and their lives were ever in harmony with the faith which they
thus professed.
Although the place of his burial has yet to be found, since his will
listed him as from Jackson Township, it would appear that he must have
been interred somewhere in that area. Jackson Township, Crawford
County, borders Richland County. Thus the cemetery may be somewhere in
the vicinity of Crestline, Ohio.

Notes for Anna Catherine Sentz:
The Calendar of Vital Records of the Counties of York and Adams
indicates that Anna Siegrist was the sponsor at Anna Catherine's
baptismal on June 19, 1791. It also lists her parents as Peter and
Catharine. The Hopewell Township tax list for 1801 lists a Catharine
Sentz (probably her mother) as owning 155 acres of land. She is listed
as owner of this land until 1808-09, when this property was owned by
Peter Sence. In 1819, a Peter Sentz sold 167 acres of land to Michael
Kunckel.
In 1855, after the death of Michael, in Crawford County, Ohio,
Catherine came with her children to Wells County, Indiana. She lived
there until her death. Her tombstone, in Murray Cemetery just outside
of Bluffton, Indiana, lists the dates of her birth and death as 1797
and 1869.
The "History of York County, Pennsylvania," page 554, gives a
biography of Benjamin S. Sentz. He was born July 16, 1866, in Hopewell
Township, son of Henry (born 1844) and Elizabeth (Mitzel) Sentz. Need
to determine if this is a connection. The grandparents were Henry and
Lydia (Tyson) Sentz.

  Notes for Samuel Daugherty Kunkel:
Samuel Kunkle received his education in the old subscription schools
of his time. He came to Ohio with his parents in about 1825 and lived
on his father's farm in Richland County, where he was acquainted with
Miss Martha Dorwin, then living in Mansfield. In 1845, the Dorwins
moved to Indiana. When Samuel's father died in 1846, Samuel moved to
Indiana to marry Miss Dorwin. He came to Indiana by way of wagon and
bought 80 acres of land in Root Township, Adams County, which was then
a part of the primitive wildness. He built a rude log cabin, where he
lived for about 16 years, subsequently trading his farm for that of
his wife's father, consisting of 160 acres in Root township and where
he lived until the early 1900's. He erected many substantial farm
buildings and maintained his land in a splendid state of cultivation,
yielding rich returns. He was a member of the English Lutheran church
and the assessor of Root township for eight years. In 1900 he sold his
farm to his son Calvin D. who lived all his years on the homestead.

and then in 1841 he came to Indiana with his parents. He lived on the
same property, Section 11, Lancaster Township, Wells County, since his
tenth birthday. His brothers lived on the property in Section 1 of
Lancaster Township, that the father had obtained from the Government.
