Ancestors of Nellie Pearl Kunkel

Generation No. 5

      16. Johan Hynurich Kunkel, born February 15, 1750/51 in Flöersbach, Hessen, Prussia; died April 13, 1827 in Shrewsbury Twp., York Co., PA. He was the son of 32. Martin Kunkel and 33. Anna Margarethe Schuster. He married 17. Elizabeth Christina Kleinfelter Abt. 1781 in Shrewsbury Twp., York Co., PA.

      17. Elizabeth Christina Kleinfelter, born February 18, 1763 in St. Jacob, Brodbeck's, York Co; died March 28, 1815 in Warrington, York Co., PA. She was the daughter of 34. Johannes Michael Klinefelter and 35. Appollonia Gerberich.

Notes for Johan Hynurich Kunkel:
A review of the book "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" would indicate
that both Johanes and Henrich Kunckel arrived in Philadelphia on the
ship Brittania on October 26, 1767. The entry states that "The
Foreigners, whose names are underwritten, imported in the Ship
Brittania, Alexander Hardy, Master, from Rotterdam, but last from
Portsmouth (England) did this day take and subscribe the usual
Qualifications." Among the 39 immigrants was Johanes Kleinfelter,
possibly the father of Elizabeth, or perhaps a relative.
Research during 1990, by Wallace Kunkel, indicates that Henry was a
Grenadier in the Ral Battery under a Commander by the name of
Boecking. The "grenadiers" were evidently chosen for their physical
ability to throw grenades. After fighting their way down from White
Plains, NY, across New Jersey, the Hessians took Trenton on December
14. There they were stationed in a two-story barracks. The barracks
still exist - in the shadow of the NJ State House, where the battle
was fought round-about. After Washington and his troops crossed the
Delaware on Christmas day, 1776 (from PA into NJ), and marched eight
miles down-river to Trenton, they killed 19 Hessians and captured the
rest - including Henry Kunkel. It was bitter cold, snowing, and the
battle took place in a small area. The Hessians probably lost because
Ral had been partying the night before and didn't take the possibility
of attack seriously. Washington was also making this a "last ditch"
effort, having retreated all the way across New Jersey. Henry was
taken to Newtown, PA (about ten miles away) and incarcerated in the
Newtown Presbyterian Church which was built in 1769. (The church still
stands, is a National Historic building, and has a typical and very
beautiful interior with an upper balcony around three sides. Services
are still held during times of the year when heat is not required.)
From Newtown, it would seem that Henry was removed toward Lancaster,
PA - and somehow deserted to an American group that was fighting its
way toward York. That group finally disbanded at York, thus accounting
for the fact that Kunkels have their American beginnings in that area.
Henry was probably also aware that he had relatives in that area.
The 1790 census shows "Henry KUNGLE" living in Shrewsbury Township of
York County. With the family were three sons under the age of 16 and
two daughters.
Deed Book 2Q, page 447, shows that on 5 April 1794 Henry Kunckel of
Shrewsbury Township, yeoman, and his wife Elizabeth, and John Bailey
and his wife Margaret sold to George Ehrman for £220 a tract of 91
acres and 90 perches.
Henry's last Will and Testament, dated 13 April 1827 and probated 13
December 1827, is as follows:
