George Cord Smith 1553 Sonoma Drive Milpitas,CA 95035-6938 408 263-2065 | In 1841 or 1842, THOMAS SMITH and MARY POTTS sailed on the ship "Annie" from Belfast,Ireland with nine children for Canada. We know the name of only one child, GEORGE, born in Belturbet, County Cavan on Nov. 1, 1825, age 16 years at the time of the voyage. The family first settled in Bytown, near Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario. After 6 years, they moved to Kincardin, Bruce County, Ontario. George married Jane Wadsworth, from County Fermanagh, N. Ireland in 1858. They emigrated to Preemption, Mercer County, Illinois in April/and or May, 1866. They had 11 children;the first 6 born in Canada; the remaining 5 in Illinois. Many Smiths remained in the Illinois and Iowa area; some moved to Okla, Calif, etc. We need info on the Smiths' ancestors and descendants in Ireland, Canada, and the USA. Jacob Timken I came to America in 1838 with 7 children after the death in 1835 of his wife, Trine Mahnken, by boat from their home village of Tarmstedt, Northern Germany via Bremen to New Orleans, then by riverboat to St. Louis. In 1839, he bought land near Sedalia, Mo. at Lake Creek, Benton County, Mo. From there, his descendents proliferated to virtually every part of the US. One descendent, Henry Timken (1831-1909), invented the world famous Timken Tapered Roller Bearing, which dominated the bearing industry for many decades, and made Henry and his family very rich and famous. He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in June 1998. I will be glad to share verified details of the Timken Family Tree with any party in exchange for same. |
