Find Family

Welcome to the EATON-THACKER and SMITH-RUTHERFORD families genealogy homepage! There is much information here, but actually there are more questions than answers. I hope there is something interesting or helpful to you here.
PLEASE NOTE: I've not confirmed all the information compiled here against primary records. Information that is confirmable with census records I have checked, as well as many birth, death, marriage and land records. Most of it appears reliable. However, some of it is from secondary sources and may be speculative or inferred information. So before taking this information as the "gospel truth", please double check it! If you find an error or inconsistency, please let me know as soon as possible!

My EATON and THACKER families of Lawrence County, Ohio, and associated families: ASHWORTH, GERLACH, RILEY, KLINEDINST, HAMMOCK, LONG, OLIVER, ROBERTS, WADE, MURPHY, LINGELBACH, and HENRY. These families originate from Beaver and York Counties, Pa., various counties of Virginia, and from Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany.

My SMITH and RUTHERFORD families were located in Logan Co., WV, and Pike Co., KY. Associated families include BUTCHER, CLARKE, LAFFERTY, WILLIAMS, SMITH/SCHMIDT (another SMITH line!), SCOTT, BEVINS, HATFIELD, TAYLOR, MAYNARD, MCCOY, RUNYON, HONAKER, HESS and others. These families originate from Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Scotland, Switzerland, Holland, and Germany.

Some notes on the research.

The Ashworth's came from Charlotte County, Va., by way of Cabell County, (W)Va. This family history has been excellently compiled in a book by Gay Edens Carrigan in Ashworths of Virginia and West Virginia, The Isaac Line, 1997.

Good ole Reuben Thacker, a blacksmith and farmer, arrived in Getaway, Lawrence Co., OH, in the 1850's after trekking around Virginia, North Carolina, and Wayne County, West Virginia. In his pilgrimages, he appears to have had three wives, at least 16 children, and his last child was born when Reuben was aged 79 years and his wife Parmelia Murphy 42 years. That child was George Washington Thacker, one of my 2nd great-grandfathers. Reuben died at the age of 103 or 105 years. Much more information is available on Reuben's descendants at John Mahey's homepage (see links below).

The Smith family starts with George Smith in Logan Co., WV, in the early 1800's. We don't know his parents. He married Emily Butcher Lawson before 1850. Soeme information on the Smith's, Butchers, and Clarkes is available in History of Logan County, W.Va. (Genealogical Section) by H. C. Ragland, Edited and Indexed by Dr. Dana R. Dorsey, 1896, Reprinted by Logan County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 783, Logan, West Virginia, 1978, pp. 4-5.

The Rutherford family has been heavily researched. This family originates from Scotland. The Hatfields have also been extensively researched. The most current Hatfield information is that compiled by Jerry Hatfield at his excellent website (see links below). Also available in many libraries is the excellent book by Harry Sellards, Jr., The Hatfields.

The Bevins family is Irish, and an excellent website for Bevins family research is at http://www.btsinc.net/famtree which is maintained by Mr. Paul Bevins and his sister Mrs. Alta Frazier.

I am only beginning the research into the SCOTT, RUNYON, PORTER, MAYNARD, MCCOY and other families who find their way into Pike Co.

I appreciate the information and help from several people, including Ralph Hayes and Sandra Thacker (Thacker line), Ken Everts and Philip Klinedinst (Klinedinst line), Nancy Edwards (Eatons), Ballard Rutherford (Rutherford line). I probably have left someone out, please contact me if I neglected to mention you.

Please contact me with any errors, omissions, questions, or simply want to exchange more info.

Happy Hunting, and God bless!

John

Family Photos

  • At a Pike County, Ky., Saw Mill (71 KB)
A group picture taken at a saw mill somewhere in Pike County, Ky. sometime between 1920-1926. This was probably close to Johns Creek. James Worthy Smith is seen standing beside the right support post with his arm on the cross brace. Can you identify any of the others or have any information on this mill?
  • James Worthy Smith with Male Relatives (60 KB)
James is standing left. I believe the others are: Allen Smith, James' father (sitting left), William Anderson Rutherford (standing right), and John Rutherford (sitting right), my grandmother's grandfather and great grandfather. I believe this may be a wedding photo, 1914. If you can confirm this let me know!
  • Smith's on the Front Porch (23 KB)
James is sitting at far right. Sallie Rutherford Smith is standing in dark dress. Nina, James and Sallie's daughter is sitting with children on step at far right. "Grandmother" Nancy Smith is standing at far right in apron. Photo taken 1919-1920. Can you help identify the others?
  • William Anderson Rutherford and Family (66 KB)
William Anderson Rutherford with second wife, granddaughter-in-law Maggie Scott Rutherford, great granddaughters Grace and Pluma (far right) Rutherford. Photo may have been taken at time of John Rutherford's death June, 1926.
  • Admiring stonework at the old Rutherford home. (26 KB)
Opal Elswick Smith (left) and mother-in-law Sallie Rutherford Smith admire the chimney stonework at the old Rutherford home.
  • At Isaac & Layer Klinedinst's Grave Site (31 KB)
My brother and I at 3rd g-grandparents Isaac and Layer Klinedinst's grave marker in Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery, Getaway, Lawrence Co., Ohio. Also buried here are our 3rd g-grandparents Reuben and Parmelia Thacker, 2nd g-grandparents George W. and Layer Klinedinst Thacker, 4th g-grandmother Catherine Lingelbach, 3rd g-grandmother Catherine Lingelbach Gerlach, and many others. In the adjacent Getaway U. M. Cemetery are buried 2nd g-grandparents William and Catherine Gerlach Ashworth. I'm the handsome one (with the Marshall sweatshirt). Taken Dec. 1998.
  • Smith's on the porch II. (21 KB)
I guess the Smith's like to sit on the front porch. James Worthy Smith is seated front right, probably with his brothers. Mother Nancy Smith is seated in chair far left. Can you help identify the others? Photo taken in the 1930's at the Smith family home in Pike Co., Ky.

  • History of Bethel Chapel, Lawrence Co., Ohio (6 KB)
Bethel United Methodist Chapel was founded by some of my Eaton ancestors and several other families. The following was printed in the Centennial Celebration bulletin in 1986 and contains several Lawrence Co. names. Bethel Chapel is still active today in the original building and located 2 1/2 miles north of Chesapeake on Eaton Road.
