What could be harder than tracing Jones and Smith :) I am searching for the Jones family that setteled around Uxbridge and Pickering townships in Ontario Canada. George Jones was born in 1748 in Frome, Sumerset County England. He married Susannah Cook, daughter of Richard & Mary Cook also of Frome. George and Susannahs son Joseph married Joan Hoddinott in 1805, daughter of Benjamin Hoddinott. Joseph came to Canada with his children in 1832 after the death of his wife and settled in Pickering Township. Other surnames that appear regularly are Fiss, Collins, Disney, Bowes, Little, Ormerod, Wilson, Flagler, Austin, Davies, Pickett, Patterson, Crummer, McBrien & Ludgate.The Davies and Little branch settled in Chicago and New Jersey. I am also looking for our branch of the Smith family from England. William Smith came to Canada in 1903 for health reasons with his wife Rachael. William worked for a year in the Crowsnest - Fernie coal mining area then left to homestead on a quarter section west of Beauvais Lake, AB which became known as the Upper Smith Place. They had a mixed farm and to supplement their income William worked in the Cristie Coal Mine in the winter months. They had 4 children, William Jacob Florence and Alice. He left the area in 1909 and returned to England, leaving his land unoccupied. In 1922 his eldest son William (Harry) returned to the farm with his wife Catherine. This farm is now an historical park. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I am also willing to share all the information I have. |
