    Charlie and Mary Ellen (O'Maley) Strange taken in their early years. They lived at Bramble, Indiana until they moved to Loogootee and ran a grocery and feed store just south of the railroad tracks on West Church Street between Hwy 231 and Hwy50 and just West of the American Legion Post #120. They were the parents of 12 children: Gilbert A., Margaret Ann, Lucy Evelyn, Michael Clement, Marcella Rose, Miriam Rita, Rozella Ann, Charles Adrian, Mary Constance, Lawrence Joseph, and twin daughters Martha & Mary who died at birth.
  • Hugh L. Smith...father of John & Martin Smith (19 KB)
    Hugh L. Smith disappeared in March 13,1884 and was believed to have met with foul play along the White River in Martin-Daviess County, Indiana, after delivering stock to market earlier that day. He never returned home although his wife Ellen Martin-Smith never gave up hope. She died on January 12,1936.
  • Robert Owen Smith - (9/22/1922 - 4/8/1945) (3 KB)
    Owen entered the Army Air Corps in February 1943, and went to England with the 8th Air Force, 91st Bomb Group, 401st Bomb Squadron. He was a tail gunner on B-17 aircraft and flew more than 50 missions over enemy territory. His aircraft was shot down twice over Brussels and a third and final time, where he was killed over Stindel, Germany on April 8th, 1945 in the aircraft named “Times-a-Wastin”. He was the youngest son of Capt. John and Mary E. "Mame" Smith.

    Son of Hugh F. & Margaret A.(Strange)Smith, Michael Eugene Smith was born in Loogootee, Martin County, Indiana and died in Viet Nam. His body was returned to Indiana and buried in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Loogootee, Indiana.
  • Hugh F. Smith - WW II (01/28/1920 to 11/13/2006) (53 KB)
    Hugh F. Smith, a son of Captain John Smith, a Loogootee school teacher, & Mary Josephine "Mame" O'Neal-Smith. Hugh was stationed in England during World War II and served as an Air Plane Mechanic keeping the Unites States fighter pilots and airmen bomber crews safe to protect us with his excellent knowledge and expertise. He is a NSWC Crane, Indiana, retiree after 37 years of military and civil service to our country. Hugh taught himself to trim hair and with that skill earned extra money while in service to send home to his family. He passed away on 10/13/06 and was buried with a full military funeral service at St. Johns Catholic Cemetery in Loogootee, Indiana.
  • Margaret Ann (Strange) Smith (64 KB)
    During World War II, Margaret worked as a telephone operator in Indianapolis where she shared an apartment with her sister, Lucy (Strange) O'Connor. Margaret married Hugh F. Smith upon his return from England when World War II ended in 1945. Margaret gave birth to five children, Charles Owen who died at birth. ("Chuckie" was named after Hugh's youngest brother, Owen, who died in World War II); Michael Eugene (died in Viet Nam, August 9, 1968), Mary Lynnette Smith, Marsha Lee Sternberg, and Stephen Hugh Smith.
