Edward Martin entered the USA at Savannah, Georgia in 1852 and married Mary O'Grady. Anna Martin was born in Georgia in 1854. Edward, Mary and Anna came to Terre Haute, Indiana in 1855, where Ellen Martin was born in 1857. Mary O'Grady Martin died in Terre Haute in 1858 and the Martins moved to Loogootee, Indiana ( a new town founded in 1856 on the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad which was completed at Shoals, Indiana with a gold spike on the White river bridge 1856). Ellen and Anna Martin were placed in the St. vincent DePaul Orphanage at Vincennes, Indiana from January 10, 1859 until March 20, 1863. Edward Martin was believed to have gone back down south during this period, possibly serving as a telegrapher for the Union army during the Civil War. He returned to Martin County, Shoals, Indiana in 1863 and settled on a farm, while commuting to Vincennes, Indiana, where he worked for the B & O Railroad as a telegrapher at Union Depot. Edward Martin died May 13, 1880 and Ellen Martin married Hugh L. Smith August 31, 1880. They had two sons, John Edward born August 7, 1881 and Martin Hugh born November 7, 1883. Hugh L. Smith disappeared on March 13,1884 after crossing Hewitt Ferry at Martins Crossing on B & O, evidently ambushed, robbed, and murdered with his body thrown into the river. No trace was ever found of him. He worked at Union Depot, vincennes prior to 1880 and until November 11, 1883. Anna Martin, evidently, continued to work for B & O RR and lived in Martin county at Shoals, Indiana. Edward Martin, and Mary O'Grady all were from Cavan, Ireland. Exact ages, occupations, periods of employment are not known. (This information extracted from a letter Francis J. Smith wrote to B & O Railroad , dated January 29, 1978.
