Owen entered the Army Air Corps in February 1943, and went to England with the 8th Air Force, 91st Bomb Group, 401st Bomb Squadron. He was a tail gunner on B-17 aircraft and flew more than 50 missions over enemy territory. His aircraft was shot down twice over Brussels and a third and final time, where he was killed over Stindel, Germany on April 8th, 1945 in the aircraft named “Times-a-Wastin”. He was the youngest son of Capt. John and Mary E. "Mame" Smith.
