Descendants of Larkin Mundy

Generation No. 1

1. LARKIN1 MUNDY was born 1794 in N.C. or Kentucky, and died Abt. 22 September 1843 in Johnson Co., Indiana. He married STACY STEPHENS 28 November 1810 in Indiana Territory. She was born Abt. 1790 in North Carolina.

Notes for L
ARKIN MUNDY:
Most of the information I have about the Mundy family came from: THE SONS OF LARKIN MUNDY & THEIR DESCENDANTS. Compiled by Paul L. Crane, 180 Blueberry Lane, W. Lafayette, Indiana. 47906. Privately published in 1970. My copy of this book came to me after my mother, Myrtle MUNDY Waters Matlock, passed away.

The following is the PREFACE to his book.

No genealogy is entirely compete nor gives as much information about the individuals therein as some will seek. Unfortunately there are a few sub-branches of the Mundy family with whom I was unable to make contact. However, there are reasons for proceeding to publish what I have rather than waiting, especially consideration of older members of the family who are anxious to see what has been accumulated.

A note about the spelling of the name is in order. Some six spelling variations of the name are found in the records: Mundy, Monday, Munday, Mondy, Mundi and Mundey. However, the more one reads the records, the more obvious it becomes that there is no authoritative value in the spellings. Rather, they are the various opinions of the clerks who recorded the name as they believed it should be spelled. Few if any of the individuals in the earlier generations in the book could read or write. Later, five of the six brothers and their descendants spelled the name Mundy, with Hiram and his descendants spelling it Mondy. Numerous descendants of Henry, Jr., brother of Larkin, now live in the Indianapolis, Indiana. area. Various sub-branches of that branch spell the name Mundy, Monday and Munday. (see appendix)

Special appreciation was given to his Aunt Anna (Mundy) Broadstreet who gave me the names of Larkin's children and made the whole project possible, and to Cousin June (Mundy) Haworth who made it possible for me to include the descendants of James, son of Larkin.

LARKIN MUNDY, HIS FATHER, TWO BROTHERS AND A SISTER

One of the early records of Larkin Mundy relates to his service in the War of 1812. He appears in the "muster roll of a company of militia drafted from the Third Regiment Indiana Militia and ordered into service by Gen. John Gibson, acting governor of the Indiana Territory for the protection of the frontiers of Dearborn County under the command of Capt. Justus Sartwell, as mustered on the 17th June 1813 under the command of Col. William McFarland." He served as a private from 3 Ap 1813 until 17 June 1813 and received $20.40 for his service.

After Larkin's death his widow applied for bounty land. She gave her name as Stacy Stephens Mundy and stated that they were married in Indiana Territory 28 Nov. 1810, by John Ewing (in what is now Franklin Co.). Another person supporting her application said her maiden name was Stacy Stevens. She was born about 1790 and was living in Marion Co., Indiana., in 1850. Larkin was a substitute in the service for Wm. White. Larkin died in Johnson Co., Indiana., about 22 Sept 1843.

The 1820 census shows that he was located in Columbia Twp. of Fayette Co., Indiana. He was a farmer, had three sons and one daughter under age 10 and he and his wife were in the 26 to 45 age bracket. The 1830 census shows Larkin in Morgan Co., Indiana. Both he and his wife were in the 30 to 40 age bracket. These census records agree with the birth dates of Larkin and Stacy stated above. The daughter between 15 and 20 was probably Sabre (or Sebray) who married James H. Abbott on 6 Aug 1839 and the daughter between 5 and 10 was pr0obably Cecelia (or Elizabeth). They had one son in each of the 15-20, 10-15 and 5-10 age brackets which correspond to Squire, Henry G. and James, respectively. They also enumerate three sons under 5 which would include Samuel, Hiram and Daniel. (According to subsequent records, Samuel was not actually under 5 ).

According to Sulgrove ~1, page 514, "John Henry and Larkin Munday, John and Henry Myers and James Martin were emigrants from Kentucky who came here before 1829 and settled east of the White River in that part of Decatur (Township) which was afterwards joined to Perry Township." Also on page 578, he states that "...Larkin, John and Henry Mundy, and their father, with their brother-in-law, Henry Myers, and Emanuel Glimpse, and others...located north of the school section, between the bluff road and the river,..." This is in agreement with information obtained from Anna E. (Mundy) Broadstreet in June 1958. Her father, Isaiah Daniel Mundy, had given her information in 1923 that Larkin Mundy came from Kentucky and settled by the White River about 10 miles south of Indianapolis. Also that his children were named Squire, Henry G., James, Sam, Daniel, Sabre, Celia and Cynthia. As I had early information that one of the sons was named Hiram, I assumed until recently that Sam was an error. We find that the 1830 census of Decatur Twp., Marion Co., Indiana., lists Henry Monday, Sr., Henry Monday, Jr., and John Monday. Henry Monday, Sr., and his wife were in the 60 to 70 age bracket, Henry Monday, Jr. and his wife were in the 20 to 30 age bracket and had four daughters, two 5 to 10 and two under 5 years of age. John Monday was in the 30 to 40 age bracket and his wife in the 40 to 50 age bracket. John had a daughter in the 10 to 15, a son and a daughter in the 5 to 10 and two daughters in the under 5 age bracket.

Sulgrove also tells us, page 583, "Henry Myers, brother of John Myers, married a Miss Mundy and came here in 1823. About 1846-47 he sold out and moved to near Peru, Indiana." In the 1850 census of Washington Twp., Miami Co., we find him with his family and discover that his wife's name was Lucinda, that she was 58 years old and that she was born in North Carolina. We also find in the 1850 census of Perry Twp., Marion Co., Indiana., that Henry, Jr. (Henry S. Monday) was born in North Carolina and listed his age as 55.

Larkin's wife Stacy was with their son Hiram in the 8150 census and lists her age as 60 and her birthplace also North Carolina.

In summary, we can say that this Mondy family came from North Carolina to Kentucky, not earlier than about 1800. Larkin was in Indiana Territory at least by 1810 when, at the age of about 16, he married to Stacy Stephens who was about 20 years of age. In April 1813 his Militia unit was ordered into active duty (War of 1812). Larkin continued living in the same general area. It is not know whether he moved but is is known that county boundaries were changed. In 1820 he was in Columbia Twp. of Fayette Co.. Apparently his sister Lucinda also lived in Indiana Territory as her marriage to Henry Myers on 6 Nov 1812 is recorded in the papers of William Major, justice of Dearborn County. Apparently they and their parents moved to Marion Co. about 1822 or 1823. The fact that Larkin was in the 1830 census for nearby Morgan Co., is probably not significant and I failed to find him at all in the 1840 census. The fact that Henry, Sr., is not in the published 1790 census for North Carolina suggests he was not yet married. However, this is not conclusive as Caswell, Granville and Orange County returns are missing.

Hopefully when the records of Kentucky and North Carolina are better indexed it will be possible to trace the ancestry further back. A chart in the Appendix summarizes the earliest generations we know.
