The Ladd Family of Virginia
Five Generations of Ladds

This is an ongoing construction - all corrections and additions are welcome.

This numbering system gives each child the parent's number on the left plus a digit for his own place in his family. If a parent has more than 9 children then abc is used for additional children. That is, if the parent is numbered 16, his children would be 161-169, and then 16a-16z.

The majority of Virginia Ladds trace their family back to the John Ladd who arrived in Virginia in about 1650. This tentative date is based on John Diltye of Charles City Co. being granted a headright in Oct. 1653 for paying Ladd's passage over. It generally took 2-3 years to apply for the land, have the land surveyed, records checked and have the government approve it so 1650 seems a good approximation. Both John's arrival date, birth date and marriage dates are tentative and based on circumstantial evidence as there is an almost complete absence of primary records. What few land records exist indicate that John was in Lower Norfolk Co., Va. during the 1660s and probably until his first wife died in abt.1674. He purchased land in Henrico Co. in 1667 (on the north side of "Four Mile Creek") but does not seem to have lived there before his second marriage. The will of Lancester Lovett in 1673 names his daughter, Bethsheba, as the wife of John Ladd and John Ladd's will in 1680 names his second wife as Mary.

History Note: Charles I of England was beheaded on January 30, 1649.
1. John Ladd; b: in England abt. 1630; d: abt. August, 1680 in Henrico County, Va.
+ 1)Bethsheba Lovett (daughter of Lancaster and Bethsheba Lovett) m. in abt. 1660;
b: Abt 1635 in England; d: Abt 1674 in Virginia;
11. Amos
12. Elizabeth
13. Sarah
14. Rachell
+2)Mary _____; b: Abt. 1650 in England; m: Abt 1676
16. William I
History Note: Nathaniel Bacon died on October 26, 1676 ending the Bacon Rebellion which was centered in New Kent County. On September 19, 1676 he had ordered the burning of Jamestown, the Capital of Virginia.

(Note: It is commonly accepted that John's four older children were by Bethsheba and only the youngest, William, was by Mary. However, no specific records seem to exist.)

(Note: The Robert Ladd occassionally listed as John's child seems to have been caused by an error in the Hinshaw Quaker records and he was actually Robert Crew. I have also seen the Huldah Ladd who married Peter Wyke listed as John's daughter but I haven't been able to find anything connecting her.)

Posted on Ladd List by Jim Christian and Charles Ladd: Bethsheba was the daughter of Lancaster Lovett by his first wife, also named Bethsheba, not by his second wife Ann. Since Lancaster was first recorded in Lower Norfolk in 1638 and we are not sure of Bethsheba's birth date it is possible she was born in Virginia.

"A Collection of Memorials Concerning the People called Quakers" in a brief chapter on William I, noted he was the son of John & Mary Ladd, both born in England.

John Ladd's Last Will And Testament, Dated June 10, 1679 lists his wife, Mary, her unborn child (William) and Elizabeth, Rachell, Mary and Amos. He left his land mostly to Amos but with part of it to the unborn child if it should be a boy. His personal property seems basically limited to housekeeping, farming and livestock items. 125 acres to Amos, 25 to Elizabeth for life, his plantation he lives on to wife but to go to unborn child if a boy. He names Mary as executrix.

"Descendants of Nicholas Perkins" by W.K. Hall; p. 8, Whereas John Lead late of this County of Henrico. . . made a will. . . but all the witnesses thereto being Quakers. . . refused to prove the said . . by oath and Mary . . . likewise refusing compliance with all the legal proceedings. . the Justices . . . give & grant unto Capt. Wm. Randolph administration.

From Henrico Co. Order Book: (very hard to read)

th day of January, 1680 (This is 1681 in present dating).

(Note: John seems to have spent his childhood in England, his young adulthood and first marriage in Lower Norfolk Co. and his time after his first wife's death in Henrico Co.)

Generation 2

11. Amos Ladd; b: Aft 1663 in Va.; d. after 1733 in Goochland Co., Va.;
+Mary Perkins; (dau. of Nicholas & Sarah Perkins); b: in Virginia;
111. Amos
112. Noble
113. Constantine
114. John
115. Mary
116. Girl
"Descendants of Nicholas Perkins" by W.K. Hall; p. 8, On Aug 20, 1694, Amos petitioned for his inheritance from his father. . .he married Mary Perkins [32] (dau. of Nicholas Perkins) and resided in Henrico Co. His home was in that area which became Goochland Co. after 1728. When selling land referred to himself as a carpenter. Referred to his brother, William as "my well beloved friend and brother, planter. Amos seems to have bought and sold several thousand acres over the next decade or two. Children mentioned for him are Amos, Constantine, Noble, John, Mary and at least one more girl.

"The Ladd Family" by Warren Ladd (Pub1890). Amos,(4382) of Lower Norfolk Co, Va., son of John. Had two sons Amos & Noble. Granted 1095 Acres in Henrico Co. Va. on June 16, 1714 and 343 acres on north of James River in Henrico on Aug 17, 1720.

In John's will he requests his son, Amos, to stay with "my wife" until he is age 17 which indicates that Amos was born aft. 1664 and Mary was not his mother. Apparently, the refusal of the Quakers (including Mary) to "swear" it was John's will caused some problems as the Courts appointed an administrator and Amos had to petition for his inheritance in 1694.

12. Elizabeth Ladd, b. abt 1662 in eastern Virginia
In John's will Elizabeth's portion is to be turned over to her at once which indicates to me that she was the oldest child.

13. Sarah Ladd b. aft. 1665 in eastern Virginia
There seems to have been no record of her except in her father's will.

14. Rachell Ladd b. abt. 1666 in eastern Virginia;
+Edmund Liptrot; m. abt 1685
Children: Amos, probably others

Henrico Order Book: (as best I can read it); film 5, page 196

Rachell Lead (one of the orphans of John Ladd, deceased) late under the tuition of John Pleasants with the consent of the said Pleasants, ordered to be bound to Philemon Childers according to law and the said Childers giving surety as the law enjoins.
(Note: a Philemon Childers was the uncle to her brother Amos' wife, Mary).

On Jan 10, 1716, Edmond Lipstrott, Rachell Lipstrott and Joseph Pleasants witnessed the will of Phillemon Childers, Sr. in Henrico Co.

On Nov. 15, 1734 in the will of Thomas Childers, in property description mentions Amos Lipstrock. (Note: I believe he is the son of Rachell and Edmund Liptrot).

(Note: Rachell Liptrott on Nov. 9, 1724 witnessed the will of Richard Dennis of CCC (Reel 11, p. 14), but is not mentioned in her husband's will in 1735/6).

[Note: I have placed Ann Ellyson as his wife. While he seems too old for the marriage in 1761 the Quaker record says that she married Thomas, son of Wm., dec. which indicates he was son of Wm. I, as Wm. II was still alive]

[Note: There was some confusion as to whether (1624) or (1636) married Unity Harris. I am not completely comfortable with this decision because of his age, but the Quaker record clearly says John, son of James was granted certificate to Circular so I went with this one marrying Unity. Also, their children's names included Margaret and Mary which were the names of 1624's sisters. Both Johns were born in CCC within about 5 years of each other, one stayed there and married Unity and the other married Hannah and went to Mecklenburg Co. ]

Abstracts of Application papers of Revolutionary Pensioners of New Kent Co.:
File No. W 8079; certificate No. 25, 282) May 13, 1833 Wm Ladd made application.
He was 73 years and enlisted 1, 4, 1781 as private in company of Capt. Lyddal Bacon of New Kent Co., in the Regt. of Colonal Richmond Allen said county; that he was marched to Providence Forge in said co. where some of the regular troops were stationed under Command of Gen. Nelson and Maj. Ragsdale (during Arnold's invasion); thence marched under Capt. Joseph Holt to Williamsburg and then to Hampden, Va., where several barges or boats of the enemy were taken when they came to shore for the purpose of plundering. On March 19, 1781 he returned home. In a few days he entered the service again under same Capt. Bacon until about May 1st, 1781 when he was again permitted to return home. June 30, 1781 he entered the service under Lieut. Jacob Vaiden, in Regt. of Colo. Richarson and was marched to Malvern Hills, Henrico Co., thence to Brook Bridge about 7 miles above Richmond, thence to Newcastle in Hanover Co., thence to the Brick House in New Kent Co. on the York River, and thence to the counties of King and Queen, Gloucester and Middlesex in which last named he was discharged--Sept 9, 1781. At different times during the last enlistment he was under Cols. Taylor and Ennis. The lst time he was called he was in Continental Line at Long Bridges in New Kent Co., under Gen. Nelson. The rest of his service was with the militia attached to the 3rd. Va. Regt. commanded by Cols. Taylor and Goodall. He stated that Samuel Moss and James Williams were the only ones in the county who could testify to his actual service. His service was about 7 mos. in all. He was born in New Kent Co., Feb 8, 1760, and has always lived in that county.
W. H. Macon (judge) testified to the good character of Wm. Ladd said he was sure he had served in the Rev. War although they were not together in the service. Macon said he had served also.
A pension of $20 a year was granted Sept. 11, 1833 the certificate being sent to E. Heath of Richmond.
Mary Ladd, widow of William Ladd made application for pension May 12, 1843. At that date she made affidavit before Nathaniel L. Savage, Justice of the Peace of New Kent Co., Va., stating that she was then 84 years old and that she was married to William Ladd in New Kent Co., by Parson Sample about the 17th of Dec. 1778 and that her husband, the sd. William Ladd had died May 9, 1843.
James Clopton of New Kent Co. made affidavit in Jan. 1845 before Wm. Slater, Justice of the Peace saying he was then 63 years of age and had known Wm. and Mary Ladd well when they lived in New Kent Co., and knew their children the eldest of whom was John Ladd who was exactly the same age as himself and they had gone to school together. He stated that Wm. and Mary Ladd were wise and respectable people of good standing in society and were surely married. The Judge, Wm. Slater testified to the character of James Clopton, saying he was a Baptist Minister of that county and a "gentleman of high respectability".
John D. Christian, Clerk of the county stated that the marriage record of Wm. and Mary Ladd which may have been in his office was no doubt destroyed with the other court papers that were burned in a fire of 1787. He said the will of Wm. Ladd was on record in his office and by it Mr. Ladd devised all of his estate to his wife Mary during natural life, and at her death it was to go to their Children---eight in number.
A widow's pension of $20 per anum was granted to Mary Ladd beginning March 3, 1843. The certificate of same (No. 6838) was sent to F. V. Sutton of Richmond, Va.

Dedication

To all the people who blazed the trail by doing research on the Ladd Family; Warren Ladd and Thomas Mifflin Ladd for their books on "The Ladd Family"; the Ladd Digging Ground which provided the "Ladd List" to post queries, ask questions and share solutions. To Misty, Donald, Charles, Larry, Jim, Sharon, Sam and the rest of the list who helped so much. Thank you..

Sources

My initial records came from the Warren Ladd book "the Ladd Family" and then from the Thomas Mifflin Ladd book. I considered the Quaker records and County records to be primary sources and changed information accordingly. I researched records for Lower Norfolk Co., Charles City Co., Mecklenburg Co. and Henrico Co. at the Virginia State Library. Postings on the Ladd List were of tremendous help, particularly as the family scattered to so many different areas. I am still in the process of researching information and still have a great deal to do. Please contact me with any corrections or additions you want to make.
