Crew Family of Charles City Co., Virginia

This numbering system gives each child the parent's number on the left plus a digit for his own place in his family. If a parent has more than 9 children then abc is used for additional children. That is, if the parent is numbered 16, his children would be 161-169, and then 16a-16z.

Generation No. 1

The majority of the Virginia Crew trace their family back to John and Andrew Crew of Charles City Co., Virginia. They apparently come to America from England in about 1670-1672. That would have been just before the Virginia Land Grant made to Hugh Lee in 1674 for bringing them over (it generally took 2-3 years to survey the land, clear the paper work and issue the grant) so I believe this was a fairly accurate date.

While John and Andrew could be brothers, cousins, father and son, or no kin at all, I believe the probability was that they were brothers. Between them they had children: Mary, Andrew, Robert, Arthur, John and Joseph. While there were probably other children, an exhaustive search of the records has not yet discovered them. I saw no record that either John I or Andrew I were Quakers.

Unfortunately, almost all of the dates, children and conclusions for the first two generations is based on circumstantial and scanty records and will no doubt change if more records are discovered. Generations 3 and 4 with most of the family Quaker and listed in Quaker records were much easier to trace.

John I made a deed of gift to his children on Nov. 9, 1694. This indicates his children were grown by then and when his daughter Mary appeared in Court to give a deposition in Feb. 1689, it states she was 24 years old. With her birth date set at 1665, her father's birth date was probably 25 years earlier or before 1640 and his marriage before 1664.

Most of our information on Andrew I comes after his death when his executor Joseph Renshaw is ordered to bring his estate inventory to court on November 3, 1692.

According to CCC Order Book, Thomas King sued John Crew, Jr. for killing his sow in Aug 1689. The jury found for Crew and it was noted that John's brother and sister, Andrew and Mary were called to testify in Oct. 3, 1689.

The following year, on Aug 4, 1690; John Crew petitioned the court for his wife's estate. It mentions that his wife Sarah was the daughter of Nicholas Gatley, deceased and that John Smith, deceased had married her widowed mother (also Sarah) and thereby had her inheritance which should be paid her by his executors, James Woodhouse and Jonah Liscombe as she had been entitled to it for 12 months. The two executors counterclaimed that John Crew was underage and therefore cannot legally claim it. Whereupon John and Sarah chose Maj. John Stith as their guardian. Maj. Stith in several court appearances managed by March of 1691 to get a judgment that either her mother must pay the 4605 lbs. of tobacco for Sarah's inheritance or Woodhouse and Liscombe will be liable for it. Notes that she was now of age.

I have interpreted this to mean that both she and John were minors in Oct 1690 but not six months later in March 1691. Since John was a minor at the time of his marriage it seems impossible to me that he could have been previously married as many people claim.

John is mentioned on several occasions in minor ways in CCC Deed & Will books as witness, etc., the only ones I thought of any note were:
p.176; Description of deed; July 17, 1727; William Grice to William Lead, 80 acres bounded by Minchins Run, said Wm Lead, land of John Crews he purchased of Silvanus Stokes and eastern Swamp
July Court 1748 110/486 Will of James Green, dec'd, proved by John Crew and Andrew Crew
Aug Court 1754 121/121; Deed to him recorded from John Bosman
Nov. Court 1757; 131/493; Will of Thomas Evans, proved by Benjamin Crew who saw John Crew witness it; John Crew, Jr., security
[Note: does this mean John Sr. was dead?]

The first Crew mentioned as Quakers in the surviving records were John and Robert Crew. John is regularly reported as a Quaker from 1699 to 1735. In 1699 he contributed 400 lbs to build the meeting house at Curles; a meeting was often held at his home from 1706-08. He was also noted as a member of the Monthly Meeting at Weynoake and the primary meeting at Old Man's Creek (sometimes called James Howards). In early 1709 he is reported removed from his house where the neighbors (Friends in the woods about Herring Creek) had been meeting and it was moved to William Ladds. He was clerk of the Weynoake meeting from 1711 to 1714; He was fined heavily in 1726 for refusing to bear arms and pay tithes, his fine was 1 mare, 76 lbs of tobacco, a gun & 5 pewter dishes. The next summer he was imprisoned for the same reason. Starting in 1735 he set on the select meeting. Records refer to him as from CCC before 1727 and from New Kent Co. after that date

Tidewater
1, p.388 . John Crew and his family of Charles City Co. were active Quakers. John Crew and his wife Sarah Gatley sued her mother of her share of her father, Nicholas' estate in February 1689. Sarah and John were both under age and Sarah's mother had married twice after the death of Nicholas Gatley (before 1685) . She married John Smith and then William Morris but both were dead.

August Court 1737 75/14: Joseph Crew Mentioned in Court.

There is no record linking Joseph to either John or Andrew as his father. I placed him with John solely because he seemed to have been born earlier than Andrew's children. When I came across the records linking Andrew with Joseph Renshall I was tempted to change the placement as naming children after relatives or close friends was so common at the time.

[21] John III (Andrew I & _____); b. abt 1670
+______ Renshall (Joseph & ______)

The Renshall connection:
(Note: This is a "best-guess" placement.)
The only record I found that John III even exists is Joseph Renshall's will dated 1725 which names John Crew and Arthur Crew as his son-in-laws. Since John I would have been about 75 then, he seems too old to be anyone's son-in-law and John II while about the same age as John III was married while still a minor to Sarah Gatley which makes him seem too young for a previous marriage. Because Joseph Renshall was executor of Andrew I's will and John and Arthur Crew were Renshall's son-in-laws I believe the obviously close connection between the families indicates this interpretation and their placement as Andrew's sons.

[22] Arthur (Andrew I & _____); b. abt. 1673
+?Ann Renshall (Joseph & ______)
+Mary _______
[221] Sarah
[222] Mary
[223] Robert II
See Renshall's will above which mentions Arthur is a son-in-law of Renshall. Arthur apparently remained Church of England as three of his children were baptized at St. Peters and he was only listed in Quaker records in 1726, as a witness. He may have only had one wife but it was rare for a women to have more than 23 years between oldest and youngest child in an era where they were generally 25 years old before marriage.

[23] Robert I (Andrew I and ? ); b. abt. 1675 CCC; d. abt Aug 1737 in CCC
+Sarah Crisp (? Crisp and Mary Howard); m. abt October 17, 1703; d. about Aug, 1737
[231] Elizabeth
[232] Josiah
[233] Sarah
I placed Robert as the son of Andrew I, because the Order Book
2 says that on Oct. 3, 1693, Robert Crew (with consent of court) chose Thomas Woodham as his guardian. This seems to indicate that Robert was the son of Andrew, as Andrew had died the previous year. To choose his own guardian Robert was probably between 14 and 18. This date seems fairly accurate as he married in 1703)

John II and Robert I, were the only ones in their generation mentioned as Quakers.

Robert received a deed on Oct. 5, 1725 from Samuel Stokes of Westover Parish, CCC for 80 acres in Westover Parish. Wit Thomas Ellyson and John New.

The Order Book
2 and 4; notes that in Aug 1737 Robert's Will was presented by Andrew Crew, surviving executor, who made affirmation (being a Quaker), as did William Ladd and Thomas Ellyson, witnesses. His estate inventory was recorded in Nov. 1737.
(Note: No Will book seems to exists for this time period and I could not locate the will).

The notations on the wills for Robert (above) and Sarah (below) were separated by only one other entry indicating they died about the same time. My assumption is that it is Robert's wife, Sarah Crisp since I found no other Sarah Crews. It was Josiah being listed as her executor that made me believe that he was their son. (See notes under his name).

The Order Boo
k2 and 4; notes that in Aug 1737 the will of Sarah Crew deceased was presented in Court by Josiah Crew, Executor, being proved by the affirmative of Thomas Ellyson and the oath of John Faque witnesses thereto is admitted to record.

Robert is listed in the Quaker records from 1701 to 1735. He is generally referred to as "of Charles City Co." and "in the woods about Herring Creek". He was married 8/17/1703; in a public meeting at the house of James Howard, Charles City Co., to Sarah Crispe, of Charles City Co., daughter Mary Howard. In 7/2/1727 he was reported imprisoned and fined. In 1735 he was fined 130 lbs of tobacco.

(Note: Keep in mind that since March 25 was the first day of the new year until 1752 a Quaker date written as 10/20/1751 is December, not October. Because the Quakers thought the names of the months were heathen they used numbers when writing the months and that is why quite often dates for Quakers will be off by two months.)

Generation No. 3

In many ways the 3
rd and 4th generations were the easiest to follow because the Quakers kept such careful records. However, I must caution you that some connections I have made even after a great deal of research and thought, fall under "Best Guesses". Is Gatley, son of John, the son of [11] or [113]? Is Gatley of Weynoak, the same as Gatley of CCC? If you don't know a mother's birth date, how can you know if she is too old to have a child? If you know John and Andrew are brothers, how do you tell which of three sets we are talking about? I have tried to indicate under each person's name what I am concerned about or what other interpretation can be put on the relationship. I would be glad to argue these points with anyone who interprets them differently or who has additional information.
[111] Andrew III (John II and Sarah Gatley) b. abt. 1691 in CCC; d. Bef. Oct. 1766; lived in CCC all life.

[1118] Gatley
The Quaker records show Andrew I as a member of the Weynoak Meeting. While almost surely a member from childhood, the first records I found on him were in early 1720 when he announced his intention of marrying Hannah Ellyson, daughter of G. Robert Ellyson of New Kent Co. They married about April 12, 1720 at the meeting house. In the summer of 1727, he was fined and imprisoned for refusing to bear arms. He was fine again in 1735, 1739, 1741 and 1745. In the fall of 1745 both Andrew senior and junior contributed toward the work on the meeting house. A major dispute among the heirs of G.R. Ellyson over the division of his property in 1749/50 involved Andrew and several of his siblings and he was forced to post a bond. When Hannah was recorded as having died on 11/21/1774 she was listed as a widow.

CCC Deed & Will book
2; Andrew was mentioned fairly often, he was a witness, on several occasions from 1726 to 1735; the Executor of the will of Robert Crew in 1737; He purchased land from Samuel Poindexter in May 1739. Seems to be the Andrew Jr. listed in March 1745 when a deed from Gatley Crew was recorded; executor to his brother John's will in 1761; made Deed of gift to his son James in 1761; was administrator to Gatley Crew's estate in 1762;

It was a challenge to separate information on the three Gatley Crew ([114], [1118] and [1138]) and place it correctly.

Any mention of Gatley Crew before 1748 would clearly be for [114] as he would have been the only one over 20 years old. In analyzing the information to decide who married Elizabeth McGehee I felt at first that it had to be [1138] as [114] would be 55 year old, rather old for a first marriage. However, the 1753 marriage record said "Gatley of New Kent, son of John, Sr. of New Kent married at house of Huldah Ladd in CCC". According to my notes John [11] moved to New Kent in 1727 and John [113] lived in CCC his whole life. In that case, [114] was the bridegroom. I am still unhappy with this decision because if John [11] was already dead the analysis would probably change. Huldah Ladd was Elizabeth McGehee's grandmother and the marriage was probably held at her home so she could attend.

12; p 142. David Crews, (son of John) married Mary Stanley, 1733/34-11-9, d/o John Stanley. This John Stanley is not the son of Thomas Stanley who came to CCC by 1674 with John Crew. Thomas Stanley had three brothers who came to Virginia at different times. This John Stanley was a younger brother of Thomas. He arrived in 1677. David married a second time, Aug 4, 1754 to Mary Ladd McGahea. She was the widow of Samuel McGahea of Hanover Co, Va. and the daughter of William Ladd and Huldah Binford. 3/1/1731 Elizabeth reported married to Thomas Ellyson

Ellison Kinfolk
6; Elizabeth, daughter of Robert & Sarah Crispe Crew of Charles City County and married Thomas Ellyson on 6d 2m 1731.; when Thomas died he left several orphans who the Quaker church helped care for. The only child whose name was mentioned was Ann who married Thomas Ladd, other issue: Robert, Gerrard and Thomas

Tidewater
1; p. 387. Elizabeth Crew was the daughter of Robert and Sarah Crispe Crew of Charles City Co. She married Thomas Ellyson on 6 day, 2nd month 1731 (April 6, 1731). Thomas was living in Prince George Co. at the time but later lived in Chesterfield Co. Thomas died by Oct 1, 1757. He died while his children were minors and the church helped find homes for them. The only child named was Ann and she married Thomas Ladd on Dec 8, 1761. Printed sources show that Robert, Gerrard and Thomas were his children also.

Henrico MM Records
8; Josiah reported married to Mary New abt. Jan 3, 1739; also mentioned that she had recently come among Friends; his family was aided by the MM in early1750; in 1752 he was criticized for misconduct; in 1758 was mentioned as member of Wainoak Meeting and of CCC when he had a feather bed and other furniture seized for fines for not paying the church fees; in 1766 the meeting again helped him as they were in need and unable to give his children schooling; he was mention as deceased in 1767 when the church paid John Crew for cloth and a cow bought for his widow

I believe Josiah was the son of Robert & Sarah Crisp. The only two males of the previous generation who were Quakers were Robert [23] and John [11]. John's numerous children seem fully documented as his; Josiah was executor of Sarah Crew's estate in 1737. Again, a best guess decision but I feel fairly secure on this one.

[233] Sarah (prob. Robert & Sarah Crisp) b. bef. 1713
+Charles Johnson; m. bef. 2/6/1734

Henrico MM Records
8; Sarah married Charles Johnson in early 1734
9/4/1756; Charles and family, of Amelia, aided financially by MM; again in 1757 and 1762

This is a best guess as John II's daughter Sarah already was married to Robert Ellyson. The only other male from the proceeding generation who was a Quaker was Robert.

In January 1749, John Crew (son of Andrew) & Judith Ladd declared their intentions to marry but his MM will not allow them to proceed as they are too near kin. Within a year he had apparently married another cousin, Sarah Ladd, dau. of James and Judith Ellyson Ladd. Both her father and sister refer to her in their wills as Sarah Crew, and her sister, Anna Ladd names as executor of her will John Crew, Sr. (who is apparently [1113] with part of her estate going to John Crew, Jr. who apparently is [11134]). Both John and Sarah were grandchildren of G.R. Ellyson II and Sarah Spence through their mothers. I see two Judith Ladds that could be the one he wanted to marry, as both are his first cousins, his wife's sister Judith was born abt. 1734 and Judith Ladd b. 1744 was the child of John Ladd and Mary Crew who was a first cousin to both his wife and himself.

In July 1760, John, son Andrew & wife long since marrying out of unity but not having been disciplined, they are now dismissed; condemned marrying out of unity & acc. They must have quickly come back as members as John became an elder in 1763; in 1765 John was fined by Peter Royster, sheriff of CCC for refusing to pay church rates and further for a demand of the like nature against his father's estate; In 1772 he became treasurer of the meeting

CCC Order Book:
July Court 1761 143/295
John Crew appointed guardian to his children, Robert Crew, Exum Scott Crew and Elizabeth Crew.

(Note: Since the Historical Society Newsletter (below) seems to prove that the three children were his, the question remains as to why he became their guardians. I believe that since his father died the preceding year, his father probably left the children something (probably land) in his will and this John was named guardian of them so he could have control over it while they were minors.)

CCC Historical Society Newsletter of September 1997; John & Mourning Crew were both elders in the Weyanoke meeting . . .. . . his. . plantations as "Boazman's" and "Pond's". . .located in Adkins Store area of the county. . .CCC land tax records for 1790's list three different John Crews who owned land. John Crew Gent (Robert's father) is . . taxpayer for one 500 acre parcel and a 150 acre parcel in name of Exum Scott Crew. John sold 100 acres of the Exum Scott tract to David Roper in 1796 describing it as . . . "Hubbards whereon Jesse Crew now lives" CCC deed book no. 4, page 319. Transferred another 30 acres of same parcel just days before his death to George Hubbard in return for Hubbard's seeing to the burial of John Crew and his wife Mourning. CCC deed book No. 4, pg. 501. Crew described this tract as "part of my land lying over the fork of the ridge path adjoining Hubbard's land". . . in 1799 a John Crew (presumably John Crew Gent.), deeded one-half acre to the trustees of the Weyanoke meeting on which the meeting house and graveyard stand. CCC deed book No. 4, pg. 373. ..
. . . April 10, 1845 . . .grand jury convened by James Hubbard. . . (as escheater of CCC) to determine whether John Crew Gent. and John Crew, Jr. died without heirs and whether or not they were aliens. CCC deed book No. 9, pg 450. . . found both men died without heirs. John Crew Gent. Owning 520 acres and John Crew, Jr. owning 165 ½ acres. . .650 acres was sold at auction to James A. Ladd, B.A. Nance & E. Nance;
125 acres to George C. Waddill. . . deed refers to it as the plot of land attached to the Quaker Meeting house, containing 3 acres and the burying ground of John Crew;
. . . John Crew was born July 16, 1728 and died on January 31, 1800. . . Mourning died just a few months after her husband on May 15, 1800.
His home was destroy by fire just before his death;
. . .I am very glad it is in my power to answer thy request respecting our ancestors accurately; except our Grandfather John Crew was born the 13

Generation No. 5

By this generation the Crew family, like so many other Quakers, were leaving the church or moving out of the area. The Revolutionary War with its popular support made it very difficult to refuse to bear arms or pay taxes to support the war. The church had shrunk in size until it was very diffult for the young people to marry within the faith with so few families to choose among. As a result of this, a large percentage of the young people were dismissed from the church and this in turn makes it very difficult to trace the family due to the lack of records during the last quarter of the 1700s

Father's Will
All my estate to my son, Robert of London
CCC Historical Society Newsletter of September 1997. Introductory paragraphs include overview of family and the letters were written by Robert Crew from London

Introductory paragraphs:
. . .Robert Crew, the London correspondent, was born in 1758, son of John & Mourning Crew. Robert moved to England . . . married an English women leaving his parents and brother Exum Scott Crew in Virginia. John & Mourning Crew were both elders in the Weyanoke meeting . . . the meeting house and graveyard appear to have been located on their land. The Charles City land tax records begun in 1783 refer to John Crew as a Gentleman, probably for the primary purpose of distinguishing him from other John Crews, but suggesting all the same that he was a man of some status and means.

. . .Refers to his father's plantations as "Boazman's" and "Pond's". . .located in Adkins Store area of the county. . .CCC land tax records for 1790's list three different John Crews who owned land. John Crew Gent (Robert's father) is . . taxpayer for one 500 acre parcel and a 150 acrel parcel in name of Exum Soctt Crew. John sold 100 acres of the Exum Scott tract to David Roper in 1796 describing it as . . . "Hubbards whereon Jesse Crew now lives" CCCj deed book no. 4, pag 319. Thus, there appears to have been only 20 acres remaining of the original Exum Scott Crew tract at the time of John Crew's death. . . . in 1799 a John Crew (presumably John Crew Gent.), deeded one-half acre to the trustees of the Weyanoke meeting on which the meeting house and graveyard stand. CCC deed book No. 4, pg. 373. ..
. . . April 10, 1845 . . .grand jury convened by James Hubbard. . . (as escheater of CCC) to determine whether John Crew Gent. And John Crew, Jr. died without heirs and whether or not they were aliens. CCC deed book No. 9, pg 450. . . found both men died without heirs. Sjohn Crew Gent. Owning 520 acres and John Crew, Jr. owning 165 ½ acres. . .650 acres was sold at auction to James A. Ladd, B.A. Nance & E. Nance. . .
125 acres to George C. Waddill. . . deed referes to it as the llot of land attached to the Quaker Meeting house, containing 3 acres and the burying ground of John Crew. . .

. . . John Crew was born July 16, 1728 and died on January 31, 1800. . . Mourning died just a few months after her husband on May 15, 1800.
. . .Robert learned of the deaths of his parents and of a fire that had destroyed their home in letters he received from CC. . .in early letters to parents he uses quaker forms of address but after their deaths it is noticeably missing.

Letter : to George Hubbard:
Dear Cousin. . .thanks him for care of parents, requests he continue as executor. . . care for the place where our grandfather & grandmother, and my father and mother are buried. . . enclose letter to our friend James Ladd, . . . let him read the books I send after you. . . your affectionate kinsman; Rob Crew

Letter : James Ladd; esteemed kinsman
. . .your letter of May 12, 1800. . .with account of my parents death. . . the loss of their house to fire shortly before.. . Cousin George Hubbard shall use for his benefit the places called "Pond's" and "Boazmans". . .I have no children living. . .and doubt any I had could hold lands without going to America and becoming a citizen. . .

Letter to Robert Crew; dear cousin; dated 5 month 1803

General discussion of agriculture
. . . I am very glad it is in my power to answer thy request respecting our ancestors accurately; except our Grandfather John Crew was born the 13
th day of 7 mo 1694 and deceased the 8th day of 4 mo. 1761. Thy father was born the 16 day of 7 mo 1728 and departed this life the 31st day of 1 mo. 1800
