Notes for T
HOMAS ANDREW RICHARDSON:
From "History of Thomas Andrew and Nancy James Richardson Their Children and Grandchildren", by Max Russell.

Thomas Andrew Richardson was born in 1849, in Texas County, Missouri. His mother died giving him birth. Thomas's father migrated to California shortly after he was born, and was going to send for Thomas when he became established. Unfortunately, he was killed by a team of horses. Thomas was raised by his uncle, a brother to his father. Thomas started his married life with Nancy Jane Flowers at the age of eighteen. This story was given to me by Elsie James Richardson.

Thomas was a farmer. The family was working and saving money to buy a farm in Missouri, when a second son was born. Thomas and Nancy were getting the urge to move south. After their fourth child was born in 1877, Thomas took the money he was saving for a farm in Missouri, loaded everything they could get on a covered wagon, and started the journey to Grayson County, Texas. They didn't have room in the wagon for Rube to ride, nor did they have room to carry grain for his horse. Therefore, Ruben tied his saddle on the side of the wagon by the water barrel and traded his horse for a bicycle. Rube rode his bicycle along behind the wagon from Missouri to Texas. Sara told grandson Max, while on the journey across Indian Territory, they could see Indians riding off in the distance. The men on the wagon train would stake out a cow for the Indians to take and feed their families. Sara told Max, Ruben was never convinced the Indians were friendly and not hostile. As long as Ruben could see Indians riding at a distance, he would tie his bicycle on the side of the wagon and ride the couplin pole. There were twenty-five or thirty wagons and a small herd of cattle in the wagon train. The journey took about three months to Texas. They arrived in Grayson County in early fall of 1878. Thomas Andrew rented a farm and bought chickens and a milk cow with the money saved in Missouri. Thomas worked out and bought enough feed for the animals for the winter.
