Descendants of Hiram Creech

Generation No. 1

1. HIRAM3 CREECH (JONATHAN2, STEPHEN1) was born Abt. 1827 in Harlan County, Kentucky, and died April 09, 1865 in Lee County, Virginia. He married MARY "POLLY" ELKINS, daughter of JOSEPH ELKINS and MARGARET ?. She was born Abt. 1824 in Wise County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1910 in Breathitt County, Kentucky.

Notes for H
IRAM CREECH:
By the mid 1850's they were living in Quicksand, Breathitt County, Kentucky. Hiram lived there until his death in 1865. He had the following land grants in Breathitt County: 50 acres on the Lick Fork of Quicksand 2/14/1852; 58 acres on the Frozen Fork of Mead 2/10/1854; 25 acres on Oven Fork 2/14/1854; 100 acres on Quicksand 2/14/1854; 50 acres on Oven Fork 12/14/1864.

Hiram Creech and at least one of his daughters were visiting family in Lee County, Virginia. On the 9th day of April 1865, the day the Civil War surrender was made, Hiram Creech and his brother-in-law David Wells, were murdered (shot) by Rebel gorillas (sometimes referred to as the Raiders of the Ku Klux Klan). They removed Hiram Creechs' boots and David Wells' Sunday vest, and then shot them. Hiram's daughter managed to get away. They apparently were sitting on a rail fence when the Rebel's approached them. One of the Rebel's supposedly had been like a brother to Hiram many years earlier there in Virginia. This is the one that shot him and then took the boots off his feet. From all the traditional stories I conclude this may also had been true. When they saw the Rebel's coming, they hid but the Rebel's saw them and told them to come out and they would not be harmed. So they came out and climbed up on a rail fence. The Rebel's then preceded to shoot them. Hiram's boots were made by his son, Alexander. After the war Alexander spent some time looking for the man who killed his father.

Note: On 23 Feb 1858, Joseph Kilbourne and Hiram Creech gave power of attorney to Ira Creech to settle the estate of Thomas Robinson (Robertson) of White County, Tennessee. Elizabeth Creech Kilbourne and Hiram Creech were two of the heirs to the estate of Thomas Robinson (Robertson), brother of Elizabeth Robinson (Robertson) Creech.

Miles drowned in Quicksand, Breathitt County, Kentucky about 18 or 19 years of age. He was trying to break a log jam loose when he drowned. He was a good swimmer but apparently his canoe tipped over and it or something hit him on the head and knocked him out. There was a knot on his head when they found him some days later. He was found buried in a sandbar except for his hand. Miles never married.
