2. ALEXANDER "ALEC"4 CREECH (HIRAM3, JONATHAN2, STEPHEN1) was born August 28, 1843 in Lee County, Virginia, and died March 24, 1923 in Pine Ridge, Wolfe County, Kentucky. He married SARAH ELIZABETH WILLIAMS September 28, 1865 in Wise County, Virginia, daughter of PLEASANT WILLIAMS and NANCY COOK. She was born June 20, 1844 in Lee County, Virginia, and died Abt. 1934 in Pine Ridge, Wolfe County, Kentucky.

Notes for ALEXANDER "ALEC" CREECH:
Alex was a man of many talents: blacksmith, shoemaker, farmer, soldier, and school teacher.

A story of a man leaving a plow point to be sharpened. He told him to sharpen it all the way around. Alex resented the implication so he did exactly what the man said-sharpened it all the way around even though the top isn't supposed to be sharpened. Another time he welded a broken sewing needle. This is a very delicate job with a forge and hammer.

Alex went to school one day but then educated himself to become a good school teacher. He was noted for his penmanship. It has been claimed that he could write with both hands at once- writing a different message with each hand.

He volunteered for the Rebel Army 9/7/1862 in Jackson. He came home without leave and was captured by the Union forces in MagoffinCo., KY 2/22/1864. He was taken to Camp Chase, Ohio and held until 5/15/1864. They had to Pledge Allegiance to get released. When he applied for a pension in 1912 he was asked why he made the pledge. He said that they wouldn't turn him loose until he did. Here you can review some of Alex's Military Service and Veteran Grave information.

After the war he roamed around for some time trying to find the man who killed his father Hiram. He didn't find him but he did find his future wife. He first saw her picking apples in an orchard. He told a friend, "That's the woman I'm going to marry". They were married on September 28, 1865 by Rev. Jim Belt in Wise Co., VA.

She got pregnant and talked him into going back to Breathitt Co., KY and settled down.

Elizabeth was the daughter of Pleasant Williams and Nancy Cook from Wise       County, VA and she had many brothers and sisters. Some of her brothers were: Butch: one who settled in Minnesota; Newt who lived in Campton, Wolfe Co.,       KY then Winchester; Dock Williams and James Salley (half brothers). Elizabeth Williams was kin to Jasper Williams who was once Sheriff of Menifee Co., KY and to Pearlie Williams that married Bud Patrick.

Alex and Elizabeth are buried in the Spencer Graveyard in Pine Ridge, Powell Co., KY.
