Notes for Mary Ann Vince:
21/02/07Mary Ann Palmer (Vince)
This is Joan Galliford's grandmother. I have a photograph of her, sent over to Joyce by Joan. I also have notes from Joan that were sent to Joyce, which say something about her.According to Joan, Mary Ann Vince was quite tall, about 5 ' 9", and verypatient with Joan and Doug, her brother. She would read to the two of them for hours, and would also sit and crochet and knit. Joan goes on to say that she could be very strict with both her and Doug if they didn't behave. Joan thinks she missed England, but as far as Joan could recall, didn't wish to return. Her relationship with her daughter in law (Joan's motherr) was by all accounts very good. Joan goes on to say that during her last year alive she was very sick and bed ridden, but that the family wouldn't here of her going into a nursing home.
The BMD Register shows a Mary Ann Vince being born in June 1853, with the birth being registered in Brentford. Ref: Volume 3a; Page 32. This date seems to be consistant with what shows up in the following cednsus returns. However the date I've been given by Joan is the 2nd April 1854.
She next appeared in the 1861 Census, when she was aged 8 and living with her parents living at 17 Acorn Street, Bishopsgate, London. This street no longer exists, but Bishopsgate of course does, and it is likely that Acorn Street would havebeen one of the streets lying off Bishopsgate Street and close to Liverpool Street Station. There were four people in the Vince family at that time. George and Mary the parents, and Esther and Mary Ann. Esther was the older of the two sisters. The Census shows them to have been born about 1843 and 1853 respectively, and both of them born in Isleworth. Middlesex.
The 1871 Census foundMary Ann still living with her parents George and Mary. They had moved to Acton, and were living at No. 1 Swan Terrace, which was part of Middle Street. There wasa no.2 and 3 Swan Terrace. Where they were was next door to 'TheSwan' public house, is shown as being in Acton Lane. The pub still exists. They had a lodger named John Childs, aged 29, living with them. Mary Ann is now aged 18 and shown to be working as a general servant. It is of course possible that this work included domestic duties in the pub next door.
It must have been between 1871 and 1873 that Mary Ann met Henry.Palmer.At this time he had lost his parents, and I 've been unable to find him in the 1871 Census. I suspect that he was living with a family whose surname was Stockbridge, but have not been able to establish this to date. Nevertheless he must have been living in the area, and probably using the Swan Public House, and it could well have been here that he met Mary Ann .
Interestingly they married in Hounslow, where Mary Ann was born, but not living in 1873 when they married, which was at the Parish Church in Hounslow on the 25th/26th December 1873. Joan Galliford gave me a copy of the wedding certificate. From which I noted that the witnesses were Esther and John Gale. I have recently established that Esther Gale was in fact her older sister Esther (see separate notes on Esther Vince).
In earlier searches for Mary's parents I was able to establish that Mary Ann was the youngest of six children born to Mary Vince. The youngestJohn, who I knowis the person known to Joan asStephen/Steven ( see my notes on John Vince) was born in 1836; followed by Mary Eliza born in 1838; George in 1839; Esther in 1842; Amelia in 1845 and then Mary Ann in 1854. All of the children were born in Isleworth, Middlesex.
Mary Ann shows up in her married name Mary Ann Palmer in the 1881 and 1891 Census living in Middle Street with Henry and their family.
Mary Ann shows up with Henry in the 1901 Census. They are living with their family at 38 Cunn ington Street, Acton. She is 46, and he's 52. With them are Henry George aged 24; Elnora Maud aged 19 and Charles aged 16.
The 1911 Census found Henry aged 61 and his wife Mary Ann 58 living at 36 Cunnington Street. He was shown to have been born in Turnham Green and was listed as being a 'bricklayer'. There were just the two of them living at this address
Her husband Henry died in 1913 and she decided to emigrate to Canada where two of her sonsHenry George and Charles had gone to live.
