Resided in Onslow or Lenoir counties and enlisted in Halifax County at age 20, August 6, 1861. Present or accounted for until captured near Petersburg, Virginia, June 16-17, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until transferred to Elmira, New York, July 27, 1864. Released on June 19, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
