John was a Captain in the Revolutionary War. He was also a Waggoner in Bradock's Campaign. He had 11 horses to pull the cart and all were killed. If it had not been for Washington's brave conduct in causing his retreat hardly a man would have escaped. Most troops were killed but John came out safe. In 1776 he marched at the head of a company to Bergen, NJ and was in the skirmish at Chestnut Hill under Gen. Bull where Bull was taken prisoner. John later retuned home and served as county commissioner.

The title to John's land was granted by the London Land Company on dec.10, 1761 & was along the gap-Strasburg road next to that of his brothers, Henry, Mathias & Daniel. He also purchased land from William Ligit & wife, Catharine. These lands passed to his Sons, John, William & Alexander. Only John stayed in Lancaster County. William & Alexander moved to Maryland along with their Brother-in-law, John Kinzer.

He was chosen county commissioner. The pioneer settlers in Leacock and Strasburg townships were composed principally of Presbyterians.

Something of interest to FERREE researchers--from the book "History of the Slaymaker Family", by H. Slaymaker, pub. by Lancaster Press, Lancaster, PA, revised 1969, pg. 149:

"Susannah Slaymaker, widow of Mathias Slaymaker (merchant) late of the City of Philadelphia, renounced, released, and quit claimed, all her rights and titles to her two brothers-in-law, Isaac Ferree and William Slaymaker, both of Strasburg Township, dated 11th November 1797. Our research uncovered this Ferree family in the Orphan's Court records of Lancaster County, 1786 and 1787. Isaac Ferree of Strasburg Township, died intestate; widow, Susanna Ferree, and 13 children; Isaac (eldest son), Thomas, Joel, Elisha, John, and Ephraim; single daughters, Lydia, Catharine, Sarah, and Rebecca; and married daughters, Elizabeth m. Benjamin Bowman, Mary m. Isaac Ferree, and Susanna m. Mathias Slaymaker. Elisha Ferree was married to the sister of Mathias, as records of the Ferree and/or Carpenter cemetery shows;

Elisha, son of Isaac Ferree, died 1832, aged 64 years Margaret Slaymaker, wife of Elisha Ferree, died 1847, aged 79 years"

  Notes for DANIEL SLAYMAKER, JR.:
Married his 2nd Cousin Susan Slaymaker, dau of John Slaymaker and Mary Peck. "The only record we found of Daniel's estate are in the records of his father-in-law, John Slaymaker. In 1831, he willed daughter Susan ten lbs. per year, fifteen bushel of wheat per year, one third of his furniture, and she was to have the house during her natural life, then to go to his son, Henry Slaymaker. Orphan's Court records of September 1844 show the final settlement of John Slaymaker estate and mentions that both Daniel and Susan Slaymaker, are deceased but three of their children share estate; Henry Slaymaker, Hanna Slaymaker, and Lydia Slaymaker m. Notes for H
ENRY SLAYMAKER:
Henry assisted in clearing the land upon which Lancaster city now stands. He served two tours in the Revolutionary War as an Ensign of a company commanded by his Uncle John Slaymaker. He was a magistrate for many years and a member of the Legislature of the Pa Congress and Senate.

DAR Records #12996
Served in the Lancaster county militia. He was County Judge and a member of the convention that framed the State Constitution

Henry Slaymaker, the great-grandfather of our subject, was also a very prominent man in his State and county during and after the Revolutionary war. During its progress he was a conspicuous member of the Whig party, and was one of the first in his neighborhood to take his stand with the Colonies. Being a magistrate at this time, he administered the oath of allegiance to those patriots who espoused the cause of the Republic, and he used prompt measures in suppressing efforts on the part of the Tories, and in punishing them for furnishing the British army with horses and provisions. When Mr. Slaymaker became the oldest justice in Lancaster county, succeeding Mr. Hubley, he was appointed principal judge of the county courts, and presided as such for one year. It was during this time that Judge Slaymaker had the site cleared for the erection of the old jail in Lancaster county, the same being the present site of the Fulton Opera House, and a number of other places of business. His efforts were ever directed toward public improvement consonant with the wise administration of public money. His prominence in his county was recognized by his appointment as a delegate to the convention called for the formation of a constitution of the State of Pennsylvania, which met at Philadelphia, July 15, 1776. His marriage was to Miss Richardson, and the three sons of the union were: Amos, Henry and Samuel.
