Notes for Joel BUFFINGTON:
described as Northern Neck, Old Buffington Island changed states

From "The Buffington Family in America", p 153:
"Joel Buffingtion, one of the older sons of William's second marriage, was born in Virginia in the early 1750's. His mother, Lena or Magdalena Ferree, was from a distinguished Hugenot family supposedly related to Admiral Caligny. His great-grand-mother was the famous Mary Warrinbuer widow of Daniel Ferree of Lindau, France (near the River Rhine), who brought her family to America after her husband's death. His Grandfather Philip Ferree married Leah Dubois of Esopus, N.Y. , and the sons of that union are echoed in the names Joel gave his sons: Abraham, Jacob, Philip, and Joel. The other Uncle "Isaac" has namesakes in later generations, if not in the children of Joel.

Joel was married by 1772 and was active in real estate and farming in Western Virginia (Virginia), Kentucky and probably owned land in Ohio and Pennsylvania as well.

His purchase of Buffington Island in 1787 was monentous. This was a small part of his holdings, but his descendants thought of themselves as "the group from Buffington Island." They are a numrous group and have relatives n most of the states."

Buffington, Joel

Joel Buffington married Elizabeth Logan, who had Indian ancestry. Joel and Elizabeth had nine children.

The 1850 Federal Census of Iowa for Louisa County lists four Buffingtons as Head of Household. Abraham C., age 22, a grandson of the above Joel (his father was another Abraham); James Q, 35, also a grandson of Joel
(his father was Joseph); Philip J., 47, a grandson of Joel (his father was Joseph); Nancy 27, widow of Samuel Wilson Buffington (his father was Joseph). This was the Joseph Buffington who married (1) Chloe Harvey and
had Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Susannah, Margaret, Amelia, Chloe, Amanda, Magdalene, William H., Joseph F., Phillip J., James Q., Samuel Wilson and Abraham Columbus.

Members of the Buffington family first came to Louisa County in 1837. They also had land in Van Buren, Mahaska and Lucas Counties, and perhaps others as well. Several died prior to the 1850 Census already cited, and at least four had been buried in the private Buffington Cemetery in Elm Gorve Township of Louisa County. Both Joseph and Chloe were there, as well as their son Daniel Wilson Buffington and his sister-in-law Mary.
