David Rankin, I,(the first),had come into Frederick County at an early date, 1740-1750 and settled on the drains of the Opeckon, a small stream with varied spellings. The area where he settled was Smithfield, later changed to Middleway, Va.The small drain that ran through their land was called Turkey Run.Almost all the grants in the Northern Neck of Virginia were from Lord Fairfax.I have copies of these grants made to the Rankins, the Provinces, the McCormicks and the Samuel Blackburns.

David Rankin, Sr. and his wife Jennett, came to this country from Ireland probably between 1710 and 1720 and eventually settled in the Shenandoah Valley1738 to 1740.The farm consisting of 775 acres was left to his wife and sons, William and David by his will which is dated 1757 and which was proved and recorded by a court hel in Winchester, VA, on August 2, 1768, which was probably soon after the date of his death.
Mike,
The data were beautiful! Thanks so much.I see that you have the Rankin-McCormick marriage placed in County Antrim. The material I'm sending says it was in County Donegal. Raphoe is a village in Donegal about 50 miles southwpasswordest of Ballintoy, County Antrim where Dr. John McCormick evidently was born. Raphoe was a Roman Catholic see and later a Protestant diocese. I suspect the McCormicks and Rankins were Presbyterians who emigrated at the time of the Ulster religious persecutions by the Church of Ireland (Protestant).
Thanks again,
Ken McCormick, Ph. D. "[email protected]"
