Moved to Fayette County, Ohio early in 1800 and all their descendants are residents of Fayette County, Ohio. They are buried at Bloomingsburg, Ohio.

SOURCE: "Chronicles of Cynthiana", by Mrs. L. Boyd.

Letitia was then the wife of Captain James Hays, a beautiful woman of the blond type, to look at her fair face or watch her gentle manner, one would never suppose that she was as resolute and intrepid as any Indian that prowled in the woods about her dwelling. (But, "these are facts handed down to us without exaggeration", says the Chronciles.) Milss at that time were scarce and far apart. Captain Hays and a number of neighbors started early one morning with their grist to a mill, miles away. mrs. Hays was left alone in her cabin with her little children and her rifle.

Michael Hogg learned as night was falling that the Indians were in ambush near Mrs. Hay's house, waiting for dark to make an attack. He determined to warn her, yet he had his own family to protect. He told his little son, Thomas, of Mrs. Hays' danger. There must have been giants among children in those days for Thomas suffered himself to be stripped of his clothing and greased in order to more easily slip from an Indian's graps if caught, mounted his horse as twilight deepened and made his way swiftly to Mrs. hays' cabin. he was barely in time for the Indians had surrounded the cabin at some distance from it. Mrs. Hays, fearing Indians, opened the door, rifle in her hand, she recognized little Thomas, drew him from his horse and into her cabin, as she did so she saw an Indian in the yard behind a fallen tree, taking aim at her. She quickly closed and barred the door and took her station at the port-hole of her cabin, the light within revealed her position to the Indian but she was too quick for him, she fired first and he fell, mortally wounded, his companion bore him to the mouth of the Gray's Run, where he died. A moccasin used to staunch the blood flowing from the dying Indian was found the next day and kept by the family of Dr. Gavin Morrison for many years."

Letitia Rankin Hays was born on May 1st, 1765 and died on January 22nd, 1852. She is also buried in Bloomingburg cemetery. Her father was David Rankin and her mother was Hannah Provence Rankin
