Benjamin Scott Rawlings was born 17 July 1799 in Kentucky. He appears to have lived for some time in Ohio prior to his father's final settlement in present- day Lawrence County, Illinois about 1816.

Benjamin S. Rawlings married the former Christena (Kitty) Mattox in Lawrence County, Illinois on 9 May 1823. They moved to the Sangamon/Menard County, Illinois area not long after that. In 1830, they appeared in the Sangamon County, Illinois census. It was in February of that year that he was
commissioned a Lieutenant in the 25th Regiment of the Illinois State Militia from Sangamon County.

Though a resident of Sangamon County, Benjamin Scott purchased about 100 acres in Menard County in August 1830. At that time Menard County was part of Sangamon. In The History of Mason and Menard Counties, Illinois, the following is reported:

"Scott Rawlins settled on a farm now owned by W.C. Rankin. He was a kind of horse
doctor and horse jockey professionally, and withal was not very popular with his
neighbors. Indeed, his sudden accumulation of large numbers of horses at different
times, warranted that they were not always obtained by strictly legal means. His
increasing unpopularity led him to dispose of his land in an early day. He moved
to an island in the Illinois River, not far from Bath, where he died a number of years ago."

Benjamin Rawlings did leave Menard County by 1837, and deed records from Fulton County, Illinois indicate that he owned property on an island in the Illinois River. In fact he campaigned for the position of constable of that county in 1835; however, he was listed in the 1840 census of Ogle County, Illinois. From there he moved across the Mississippi River to Clinton County, Iowa, where he died at DeWitt, Iowa on 15 March 1846.

Christena Rawlings remained in Clinton County for nearly ten years. In 1854, much of the family left the county for southern Iowa (Page and Taylor Counties). Christena died there in 1882. Benjamin and Christena's descendants are now spread across many states.
