Hon. John Monroe was born in Glasgow,Barren Co.,KY.His boyhood was passed in the private schools of his native town. His father died when he was but a boy. He entered the apothecary shop of his uncle,Dr. George Rogers,a physician of Glasgow and there became familiar with the compounding of medicines and also studied medicine under his uncle's instructions. He first began practice in TN and in Nov.1833 came to Il and engaged in the practice of his profession in Shelbyville, soon removing to Charleston.. A few years later he engaged in business as a dry goods merchant. Returning to KY,he was married April 4,1840 to Mrs. Martha Ferrish, a widow lady of Greensburg.KY and came again to Charleston. They had 6 children..Mrs. Stanley Walker and Lewis Monroe of Charleston. His wife died May 14 1854 and on the 6th of Novemeber 1854,he married Miss Hannah Chambers, daughter of James and Sally chambers of Cynthiana,KY who came to Coles Co. with her parents in 1851. Of 5 children of this marriage ,three are now living..Emma (wife of Thomas T. Threlkeld of Charleston),Virginia, and Henrietta. Dr. Monroe continued in the dry goods trade in Charleston until1858 when he moved to Lafayette Township, where he owned a farm of 1700 acres. He laid out the village of Stockton, building the switch and a warehouse and store at that place. He still, however, retained his interest in business in Charleston, and, in 1865 returned to that city. He was an enterprising ,successful business man, genial in manner, and although carrying on a variety of important enterprises,he never allowed the cares of business to weigh upon him.He had great faith in human nature,of which he was an excellent judge. He trusted largely to others, although he kept his business well in hand, and happily his confidence was never betrayed. He took special interest in assisting worthy young men in business, and numerous instances can be found of men, now prosperous, who owe their start in life to Dr. Monroe. He owned at his death,a fine farm of 800 acres, besides 8 business houses and 2 dwellings in Charleston. He was an active Democrat, but never an office-seeker. He was, however, for a number of years one of the Supervisors of the county, and one of the most efficient members of that board. He also represented the county at one time in the State Legislature. He died July 29,1877. Mrs. Monroe still resides in Charleston, surrounded by an interesting family and in the enjoyment of an ample fortune. (History of Coles Co.,IL 1897)

James A. was a carpenter by trade but did not carry on his trade in a regular way but as a journeyman. The main fault of his life was that he was frequently overcome by liquor. He was as kind hearted a man as it was possible to be. Four years after the death of his wife,in a fit of intoxication,he was inveigled into marrying a most disreputable woman who embittered the whole of his remaining life. Sometime in the year 1885 he had a severe headache and concluded to take a dose of morphine, but not having taken any before,he took an overdose which soon killed him. Death struck him a few minutes after he took it. (Gen. of the Family of James Chambers by W.M.Chambers 1887)

SOURCE: Mrs. Geraldine E. Ballew, 14192 Tuorumne Road Spc 37, Sonora, CA 95370-9710. Her information possibly from Joan Saario, (see information above).

"James Blackburn and his wife Nancy came to Red River Co., Tex. in the late 1840's as their children were all born in Tennessee, but they were in Red River Co., in time to appear in the 1850 Federal Census. Sometime during the next 10 years James purchased a farm on Wild Car Creek. The 1860 census listed only the younger children, apparently the older ones had gone their ways. One of the daughters, Roda, had married a man named Nichols, and she had returned to her parents with two children, Mary and John Nichols. I suppose her husband had died or gone his own way. Roda had married several times in her life. She had also lost one of her legs, from what reason I do not know.

I know James Blackburn died about 1870-71 in Red River Co., and is probably buried there. Nancy Blackburn was listed in 1880 Denton census records in the household of her youngest daughter Louisa, who was married to William H. Owen, who was a nephew of our Gr. Grandfather Benjamin Owen. There was a lot of intermarrying with the Blackburn and Owen families. Since James Blackburn was in Texas by the late 1840's that discounts the story of the Owen & Blackburn migrating from Tennessee to Texas together. The information on Rhoda Blackburn I received from her Great grand-daughter Norma Anderson of Fort Worth, Texas. Information I have received indicates that James and Nancy were living in Missouri in 1833, but I discount this as all of their children are listed as being born in McMinn County, Tennessee with the exceptions of Martha (Merilda?) and Rebecca who were born in Bradley County, Tennessee and the last child Louisa was listed as born in Red River County, Texas in 1847, so that indicates they had migrated to Texas before 1847.

Their daughter Rhoda's first marriage was to John Nichols, June 5, 1856, she had a girl, Mary Nichols and a son John Nichols, then she returned to her parents, James and Nancy. Her next marriage wsas to Jim Perry, he was shot the day one of their children was born. Later she married a Mr. Russell. One of her grand-daughters made the statement in later years that "for a woman with a wooden leg she sure got around". Poor Rhoda didn't have an easy life.
