"THE VAN SANT FAMILY OF NEW UTRECHT AND BUCKS COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA" by Barbara A. Barth

Gerret arrived in New Netherland about 1651, as he took the oath of allegiance in New Utrecht (in present day Brooklyn) in 1687, stating that he had been in the country for 36 years. He first used the surname Van Sant (Vansand) when he purchased land in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1698/99. An abstract found recently in the archives of Amsterdam called "Noord Amerika Chronologie" (containing abstracts of Amsterdam notarial records pertaining to North America, 1598-1750, microfilm in the NYG&BS Library, see REC 121:36).

1652 April 16. Abraham de Wijs, merchant in Amsterdam, in the name of
Cornelis de Potter, his brother-in-law, who lives in the Manhattans in New
Netherland. He takes into service for him: Christoffel Harmens and Trijntje
Claes, to work there for de Potter. Also their son Gerrit Christoffels, 8 years old,
shall work with them. This is for a time period of three years, at 200 carolus
guilders per year. Free board and room.

Upon his father's untimely death, the Orphanmaster's Court appointed Sieur Johannes Nevius and Jacques Corteljou to be guardians to protect the 12 year old's 1/2 share of his father's estate. This made necessary by his Mother's intention to remarry. (From "The Minutes of the Orphanmasters of New Amsterdam", 1655 to 1663, ed. Berthold Fernow, 2 vols., 1902-07, 1:31-32. Also abstracted in "Yearbook of The Holland Society of New York", 1900, p. 113, and Teunis G. Bergen, "Genealogy of the Van Brunet Family 1653-1867", 1867, p. 4: according to the latter, the guardians were instructed to secure the child's share "by mortgage on the lands or other real estate." The original record may be seen on FHL microfilm 497,643, available in the NYG&BS Library.)

In 1685 he was a tenant on the farm of his stepmother's second husband, Rut Joosten Van Brunt, at Yellow Hook, New Utrecht. He also owned 18 acres at Yellow Hook, and was one of the fourteen freeholders of New Utrecht included in the patent from the Governor Thomas Dongan, May 13, 1686.
He purchased two half lots there from Dionys Theunissen on February 1, 1691/92, which he sold July 31, 1695 to Dirck Van Zutphen. A magistrate of New Utrecht in 1691, he was on the assessment rolls there in 1683 and 1693.

By 1698 he had removed to Bucks County, Pennsylvania where he purchased 150 acres on the "River Neshaminah" from Joseph Growden on February 10, 1698/99, recorded October 20, 1699 as "Garret Vansand". Gerrits son Cornelius also purchased 150 acres adjoining that of his father. He left no will when he died.

SOURCE NOTES: Born in Zaandam or Zandberg, Holland. He came to New Amsterdam in 1651, settling in the Brooklyn area. He was of the Dutch Reformed or Presbyterian faith. He was a magistrate in NY in 1681. In the Married Elizabeth "Lysbeth" GERRITTSE (8).

Landed in New Utrecht, N. Y. in l651 from the Netherlands. Had 10 children and moved to Bensalem, Pa. He took the oath of allegiance to the English King in Sept. 1687.
For a great deal of good information about Gerrit see letter to me, JFB, dated 25 Jan. 1995, from William J. Utermohlen, 1916 Windsor R., Alexandria, Va. 22307. This communication contains a great deal of interesting word about Gerrit and the next two generations. Especially, there is question about the wife or wives of Gerrit, in that Lysbeth Gerritz and Lysbeth Cornelis may be the same person. From Utermohlen- "Garret Vansand, husbandman, and his son Cornelius each purchased tracts of 150 acres in Bensalem Township, Bucks County, Pa. on the 10th day of the 12th month 1698 (i. e. 10 Feb. 1699 N. S. )
