"My sister Mary's husband was a Methodist Minister and Church meetings were often held in his big home, one of the Mission houses.I often used to go.Once there was a big crowd from Salen, all the Missionaries and people family around were there.I think it was a prayer meeting, anyway, everyone was kneeling-so was I-but I was not very interested and it was such a good chance to look around.Mother never allowed me to do that, but; under the circumstances, of course, I felt perfectly safe from observance.Presently I saw a hound dog come in.He stood away up on his tip-toes, then edged diagonally around the circle and sniffed at the kneeling worshippers, then he sat down, lifted his head, and howled, howled as only a hound dog can.My uncle was fearfully mortified and tried frantically to reach the dog, grabbing and grabbing for his tail.In Uncle's excitement, however he never noticed that it was old Ranger, who hadn't any tail at all to speak of.Finally, Uncle decided to try kicking.Out flew his leg exactly like a vicious mule.Oh, but it was impious kick, but he misjudged his distance.I could have told him that in the first place, for I had not missed a move. His soft leather slipper--dislodged by the force of his kick-shot straight as an arrow across the room and landed true and square on the cheek of a kneeling fat lady. She seemed annoyed by it."
