Information On Snelson's John Thomas Snelson Sr. 1759-1843 John "Thomas" Snelson was born in what is now Buckingham County, Virginia. Buckingham County was formed in 1761 from the County of Albemarle in an area of rolling hills known as the Virginia Piedmont. We know that at least part of his childhhod was spent in his native state. Only speculation can be made as to when he and his family moved to South Carolina. Thomas was only 18 years of age when he enlisted in the service as a colonial soldier. He enlisted on July 15, 1777 in York County, South Carolina. After his first tour of duty, which was an expedition into Georgia and Florida, he became a resident of Edgefield County, South Carolina. In 1779 he took another tour which led him back into Georgia and to the first Seige of Savannah. His dedication to the cause motivated another volunteer for service in 1780 and again in 1781, fighting in the first, and then the last Seige of Augusta, Georgia. Thomas was a farmer and a minister. In 1821, he the minister of the Baptist Church in Hopewell Township, Ohio. In 1832, Thomas applied for a pension as a result of his service in the Revolutionary war, which was approved. He was 73 and still very active. He helped establish the Little Piney Church in Phelps County, Missouri. Thomas and Deborah are buried in the Pine Hill Cemetery in Phelps County, Missouri. Levi L. Snelson 1786-1856 Levi was a wagoneer with the Meremac Iron Works in Crawford Co., Missouri. He acquired much land and held several offices in the following years. He was one of the first Magistrate Judges in Crawford County and presided as President at the May term in 1838. He was also Justice of the Peace of that county 1836-1838. Levi is buried in the Pine Hill Cemetery. Amos Leonard Snelson 1840-1923 Amos Leonard Snelson served in the Civil War as Private in Company "E" 8th Missouri Infantry Confederate. At the time of the 1900 census, he and Nancy were living were residing in Cane Creek Township, Butler Co., Missouri. Amos died in Winona, Shannon Co., Missouri William Sugget Snelson 1867-1930 William Suggett Snelson was born in Crawford County, Missouri. In 1900, he and Carrie were residing in Winona Township, Shannon County, Missouri. William died in Shannon County and is buried in Williams Cemetery
