Joseph Lane Williams of Virginia/Nebraska

I am researching the Joseph Lane Williams(1841-1916) family tree. Joseph was born in Danville, Virginia and later moved his family to Nebraska in 1880. His Father was Jacob Williams(1810-1849), Mother-Sarah Elizabeth Smith(1810-). Grandfather Thomas Williams(1776-1849). I have been unable to trace the family any further back. I am very new in the genealogy field and would appreciate any additional information.
