Dear Dennis

I am sorry to answer so late but I must have deleted my information concerning your forbears: I mailed it on October 11, 2002 - or rather tried to mail it, because at that time I had difficulties with my computer. So I have to reconstruct the history again, taking my information from the "Geschichte der Familien von Arx", written by Otto E. von Arx and privately printed in 1941. As was usual this genealogical history is based on male lineages only.

There is only one person called Chrischona (= Christiana) von Arx - mentioned in the "Geschichte" - who might be identical with your ancestor: Chrischona von Arx, born at Liestal September 15, 1588 (Liestal, now the capital of the Canon of Basel-Landschaft, is some miles north of Sissach).

This Chrischona von Arx was the first child of Gedeon von Arx (born at Sissach May 13, 1565, died after 1608; he was a tanner and a member of the municipal council of Liestal; i.e. he moved from Sissach to Liestal) and of Elisabeth Rutinen whom he married before 1588; she died after 1608.

Gedeon von Arx was the third child of Johannes von Arx (born 1521, citizen of Basel, later citizen of Liestal, so he moved from Basel to Sissach; a document shows that in 1557 he was the vicar of Sissach, i.e. belonging to the reformed church; he died at Sissach July 23, 1581) and of Chrischona = Christiana Schenkli (died after 1569), whom he married November 26, 1543.

Johannes von Arx was the fifth child of Diebold = Theobald von Arx (born around 1480, lived at Basel) and Barbara Bürckli, whom he married before March 12, 1514. She was the second wife of Johannes after having become a widower. She died after April 5, 1535.

Diebold = Theobald von Arx was the first child of Heinrich von Arx (birth date unknown; 1485-1495 he was "landvogt" = governor/bailiff of a castle that belonged to the city of Basel; he died 1495) and of Elsi Senger, whom he married before around 1480; she died after 1496.

Heinrich von Arx was the second child of Hans von Arx (birth date unknown, he is mentioned in a document of 1437, showing that he was a member of a guild at Basel; he died 1474) and of Elsina Irmi, whom he married before 1446; she died 1477.

Hans von Arx was a child of Konrad (Kunzmann) von Arx (born in the second part of the 14th century; he is mentioned in several documents showing that he owned a house in Basel; he died around 1442) and of Adelheid ?, whom he married before 1411; she died after 1452.

This Hans von Arx is the first in the genealogy of the so-called "Basler-Stamm" = Basle-line which in the male lineage appears to be extinct since the second half of the 17th century.

The only still existing lineage derives from an ancestor who belongs to the town of Olten (Canton of Solothurn): "Oltner-Stamm".

The name "von Arx" is derived from an estate ("Hof") called "Arx" (in the Canton of Basel- Landschaft, the Canton of Basel having been separated into two so-called half-cantons in 1833: Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft). So the original meaning of "Arx" is local, and "von Arx" means someone (coming) "from the Arx" (estate). Today the "Arxhof" is an "Arbeitserziehungsanstalt" (reformatory) at CH-4435 Niederdorf BL.

Notes for MARY SULLIVAN:

From: "Ward, Mary" <Mary.Ward@compaq.com>

Isaac Wesley was married only twice: to America Dunnica and to Mary

Sullivan. The exact date of marriage to Miss Dunnica was March 11, 1842.

I have a copy of the original certificate. The date of marriage to Mary

Sullivan is 19 (not 9) September, 1867. I have the original certificate.

Mary Sullivan was born in Mobile, AL, not France. I have a document

stating that the 1880 census shows her parents being born in France, but according to family history her mother was born in New Orleans and her father was

from Ireland.

Mary Sullivan's parents were Ole Wiltz, born in New Orleans, and John

Sullivan, born in Ireland. He is said to have immigrated to Virginia & then later to Mobile, AL.

We haven't found out much about this line because Mary Sullivan was orphaned early in a yellow fever epidemic. John is said to have died

of yellow fever in N.O. There was a yellow fever epidemic there in 1853, so

perhaps that is the year of his death. None of the many John Sullivans that

I found in the death rolls for that epidemic are of the correct age to be

Mary Sullivan's father, but record-keeping during a mass epidemic is

somewhat suspect.

She was either raised by her grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Jean Baptiste Wiltz of N.O., or in a N.O. convent. She was living in the convent when she went to work for IWC to care for his children after America Dunnica's death.

I have an original letter to Mary written shortly after her marriage from

"Grandmother, the widow Jean Baptiste Wiltz" which indicates at least a

cordial relationship, but there didn't appear to have been any contact with

the Wiltzes thereafter. Unfortunately there were several Jean Baptiste

Wiltzes in N.O. so we've not been able to figure out which one was the

grandfather. Alas, Granny didn't give her own name! The good news is that

all the JBWs are related to each other, but it would still be nice to know

which one! Mary and Isaac were never married in the Catholic church, so

that may be the reason her Catholic kinfolk did not keep in touch. The

topic of the letter I have is admonishing Mary to take advantage of the

"honeymoon" to convince IWC to consent to the Catholic rites.

Mary Sullivan (Catholic) married Isaac Wesley (Presbyterian) in a Protestant

service. The Catholic Church did not recognize marriages performed outside

the Catholic rites. So in the eyes of the Catholic Church, Mary & Isaac

were "living in sin." Given the mores of the mid-nineteenth century, Mary's

Catholic relatives and friends may well have ceased contact with her because

of her "sinful" state.

I don't know if Mary actually tried to convince Isaac to marry in the

Catholic church or not. If she did, he clearly refused.

I have heard that in later years Mary Sullivan became friends with another Osyka woman who had been Catholic but also married outside the church.

They used to get together on Sundays on the porch to study and read the Bible.
