Notes for JOHN PENDARVIS:

He became a planter in Berkeley & Colleton Counties. He held grants for 2,109 acres on the South Edisto River in addition to his home plantation on the Ashley River in St. Phillip Parish (317 acres & 24 slaves).

John was a member of the 9th Assembly (1707) & held several local offices which included reciever,

for raising money for a watch on Sullivan's Island (1690) ; tax enquirer for St. Phillip Parish (1716, 1719)

; & commissioner of the High Roads for St. Phillip (1721). He was a Quaker.

On March 17, 1725 , the inventory & appraisment of his estate was returned. In addition to furniture & personal items, among the items of interest were shoemaker's tools, carpenter tools, 14 cows, 4 working oxen, 3 horses by name, 11 head of horse-kine, 3 steers, 18 head of cattle , 24 negroes & 1 indian women, 1 bible & a history of "ye old & New Testament" . Records he left indicate he was both ambitious & religious.

Hannah Kays/Keys, a widow. REF: RandyFloyd msg 16Mar99 I think Hannah Keys was the daughter of Thomas Goring, Sr. and sister to Thomas and Walter Goring. Thomas Goring, Sr. had a daughter Hannah christened in Mayfield, England in 1700 around the same time as his two sons. He was co-guardian with Hannah Keys to young John Keys, after the death of Hannah's husband John Keys, Sr. The brothers Thomas and Walter Goring were witnesses much later on land deeds of the Hasforts. The reference for Hannah Keys being nee Butler comes from the will of John Pendarvis, who refers to Richard Butler as his brother-in-law. The problem with that assumption is that the will is written three years before the Pendarvis-Keys nuptials. Another theory states that Mary Pendarvis Tidmarsh, sister of John Pendarvis, married Richard Butler after the death of her first husband Giles Tidmarsh (d.1699). It also seems likely to me that Richard Butler was married to a sister of Samuel West's and Mary West Pendarvis', making him a brother-in-law in that way. Though conjecture, I think it is more likely that Hannah Goring Keys Pendarvis Hasfort is the mother of the younger Hannah Hasfort because John Keys, Jr., son of Hannah G. K. P. Hasfort, became her legal guardian following the death of Joseph Hasfort, Sr. If he was her half-brother, his appointment as her guardian makes more sense. Perhaps the older Hannah died in childbirth and Joseph Hasfort remarried right away. Naomi Carlisle was probably a daughter or granddaughter or widowed in-law to Ann Pendarvis Carlisle and would have been in the family fold. Interestingly she became an Episcopalian shortly before her marriage, and had probably been a Quaker like so many other of the Pendarvis extended family members.
