By Dec 30, 1762, the family had moved to Frederick County, Virginia, where William was born. About 1769 the Guest family moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina, located about 30 miles south of the Virginia border. William Guest, Sr. lived in Surry Co, NC in 1769. He was granted land on the South side of Yadkin River March 3, 1779 in Wilkes County. He and his family moved to Pendleton District, Sough Carolina in 1785, and he and Susannah appeared on the 1790 census records. It is presumed they died there sometime shortly after.

We learned from the Archives & Records Service at Baton Rouge, Louisiana

that Nancy Laverne had been granted a Widow's Confederate Pension.

It contained the following information:

Date of application: May 16, 1906

Name of Widow: Nancy L. Brown

Widow of : R.A. Brown

Who entered the Service of

Confederate United States: In the fall of the year 1862

IN: Co. "K" 4th Louisiana Cavalry

Under: Col Harrison and 1st Lt. McCranie

Served to the surrender of the

South to the North: Natchitoches, Louisiana in May 1865

She was married to said soldier under the name of: Nancy L. Guess

ON: July 11, 1849

BY: Rev. Scott

AT: Attala County, Mississippi

And her husband died in: October 18, 1900, Vernon Parish, Louisiana

From: Blood Poison

And she has resided in the State of Louisiana: 55 years

Two Witnesses: M.H. Stanly; Leesville, Louisiana

Lee McAlpin; Leesville, Louisiana

Sworn & subscribed before: J. J. Hicks; Clerk of Court

ON: May 1, 1906

AMOUNT OF PENSION: $12.00 Quarterly

From this information it seems that Nancy Laverne must have been thirteen

years, eight months and eleven days old on her wedding day, July 11, 1849.

Rodolphus Augustus Brown was born June 25, 1827; therefore on his wedding

day he must have been twenty-two years and sixteen days old. If Nancy

Laverne resided in Louisiana for fifty-five years, then they would have

come here in 1851.

We do know they came to Louisiana from Mississippi before the Civil War

and before there was a Vernon Parish, or, a City of Leesville. When

Rodolphus Augustus Brown came from Mississippi, he settled on a farm near

Hawthorne. They had to go to Many, Louisiana to get their mail which was

then the parish seat of Sabine Parish. It was not until 1871 that Vernon

Parish was established and Leesville founded as the Parish Seat of Vernon.

The following notes were written by her granddaughter Sybil Jones

(Hardin):

"My Great Grandmother, Nancy Laverne Guess, could neither read nor

write. After her daughters had learned to read and the terrible

conditions of the Civil War began to clear away, magazines began to

become available. She subscribed to all the good or better magazines

available. When they arrived, she would start the daughters out reading

aloud to her from these magazines. They would take turns reading until

she had heard the full contents from cover to cover. She was always so

eager to hear about everything that was going on in other parts of the

world outside of Vernon Parish, Louisiana.

My Grandmother, Malinda Mason Salsbury had been a school teacher prior

to, and even after marrying my Grandfather, James D. Brown. But in years

to come, when one of her children became ill, she immediately sent for

her mother-in-law. My Mother, Lula Mellie Brown, recalls her

Grandmother's arrival with her little bag of herbs; and, what child could

appreciate the taste of herb medicine?"
