She married (1) GEORGE HARTZOG1 17651, son of BARNARD HARTZOG and ANNE CHEVILETTE. He was born Nov 23, 1738 in Sandhausen, Germany1, and died 17821. She married (2) JOHN HENRY FELDER1 c 1772 in Orangburgh, SC1, son of HANS FELDER and URSULA. He was born 1720 in Zurich, Switzerland1, and died Feb 12, 1780 in Orangeburgh, SC1. More About GEORGE HARTZOG and CATHERINA SNELL: Marriage: 17651 Notes for JOHN HENRY FELDER: [Henry Snell SC.FTW] In 1775 Henry Felder was Justice of the Peace of the Quorum for Orangeburg District, SC. The Justice of the Peace was far more important in Colonial days than it is today. Henry Felder was also a member of the state legislature. He was probably educated in Zurich before he left Europe. A traditional joke was that whenever he got in the legislature to present a bill, it became law before he sat down, from which we infer he must have been a John P. Morgan in his day and time. Under the Provincial Government of South Carolina in 1775, Henry Felder was placed on the committee for Effectually carrying into execution the continental association and for receiving and determining upon application relative to law process for St. Matthews Parish which included Orangeburg Township. In the same year he was elected a member of the Second Provincial Congress from St. Matthews Parish and was a member of that body when on March 26, 1776 it adopted a constitution and formed an independent government for South Carolina. Henry Felder held varied offices. He was employed by the Second Provincial Congress to Manufacture gunpowder for the Revolutionary Government. He was a member of the Grand Jury of Orangeburg District in 1776 that addressed Judge Drayton in favor of the revolution. He was manager of the elections and a member of the Grand Jury again in 1778. Henry Felder was a captain during the Revolution and his company doubtless belonged to Rowe's Regiment. The traditions of the Felder family say that Captain Felder had seven sons: Henry, Jacob, John, Frederick, Samuel, Abraham, and Peter in his company. It is said that John, the third son, was killed during the war. He was captured with his stepmother's brother, Snell. While the British soldiers were at dinner on banks of the Congove River, they attempted to escape. Snell escaped to the woods, but John jumped into the river and swam across with his hands tied. The guards shooting at him all the while. After he reached the opposite bank, he was killed by his own gun in the hands of the guard. A Mr. Rice, of Barnwell District was a member of Captain Felder's Company during the Revolution. He was present with the company on one occasion when they stopped a body of Tories at Holman's Bridge over the South Edisto River in Orangeburg District. Captain Felder had two homes burned by the Tories during the war and at the burning of the first house appeared in a Gazette (of South Carolina) October 7, and 14, 1778: "Whereas, the subscriber's house was plundered and burned and all his papers were either burned or destroyed: "To prevent fraudulent demands that may hereafter be made on him, he gives this public notice that those persons who have any lawful demands on him either in books of account, bond, note of hand, or otherwise, or desire to make demand on or before the first of January next ensuing, and receive payment; all persons indebted to him are likewise entreated to make payment as far as may be consistent with their knowledge. September 27. Henry Felder." Judge O'Neil in his "Bench & Bar" has this to say of Captain Henry Felder: "This gentleman was a very active partisan in the Revolution. He brought his love of liberty from his native canton and like Tell of his fatherland, he was willing ro peril all rather than submit to tyranny. He guided General Sumter in his approach to Orangeburg and bore a part of the capture of that port." At about the close of the war the Tories surrounded Captain Felder's house. The gallant Swiss, with the aid of his wife and servants who loaded guns while he fired, killed more than twenty foes. His house was at last fired and he was thus forced to flee. In attempting to escape he was shot and killed. The traditionary account of the above affair, as told by an old Negro servant, who as a young man had been an eye witness of a part of the tragedy, is as follows: One day Captain Felder received a message from Samuel Rowe, a Whig friend, that the Tories intended to attack his home the next day. With his sons and his overseer whose name was Fry, he defended his house, defeated the Tories and drove them off. As soon as they left he sent his sons through a bypath to waylay and ambush them but Before reaching the ambush the enemy returned to his home and setting fire to load of hay that was under a shed near the house, caught the house afire. Captain Felder put on some of his wife's clothes and attempted to escape but was recognized by his boots as he jumped the fence, and was shot. He continued his fight for several hundred yards and dropped from exhaustion and loss of blood just as he reached the woods. The same Negro above mentioned was cutting wood nearby and went to his master's assistance. He was not yet dead and help being procured, he was taken to a place of safety where he lived a day or two before he died. After the death of Captain Felder, his son Henry commanded the company and after the war his company formed a part of the District Militia. There are two old canons used as corner post in Orangeburg that are said to have been used by Captain Felder on the occasion of the siege of that place. One of the guns has on it "H. Felder, 1781," and the other has on it "H.F." From Daniel Lanter, a product of his research on the Felder Family; Hans Heinrich Felder is believed to have come from Zurich, Switzerland. As Zurich is a German canton, he is believed to be of German descent. Hans and his family arrived in Charleston, SC on Sunday, 13 Jul 1735. When settled in Orangeburg he received the permission of the Surveyor General to have a tract of 200 acres of land laid out for him. It was fully granted to him by Lt. Gov. Broughton 17 Sep 1736. Subsequently he obtained another 100 acres. He died a year or two later. His widow died in 1739 leaving her son and his lands and other property to the gaurdianship of Henry Wurtzer of Orangeburg. In 1955, F. J. D. Felder, Sr. found Hans Heinrich Church at Schupfheim, Switzerland (near Lucerne). A stained glass window there is marked for Hans H. Felder. Colonial Plat map, Vol. 9, pg. 436, (FELD-SC12). Notes from research of William Mark White In 1735 a group of German speaking Swiss arrived from the old country and settled in the Orangeburg Township (upper Edisto River) of South Carolina. Among the group appeared Hans Heinrich Felderen and his wife Ursula. They obtained land in the area about the time of the senior Felderen's death. He was granted 350 acres of land on 17 Sep 1738 by King George II of England. Then in 1739, between the months of Aug and Oct, Ursula also died. On Aug 30 1739, widow Ursula Felderen made her will (written in German) inwhich she left land purchased from "Gelser" to her only son John Henry Felderen or Felder. The executor of the will was to have been Henry Wurzer. Witnesses to the document were Henry Wurtz, George Giesendanner, Jacob Christaller, and Michell Christopher Rowe. However before this instrument received probate on Oct 10, 1739, it was translated into the English tongue from German. (S.C. Will Book 1736-1740, page 404). The son John Henry Felder was not yet nineteen when his mother died, a fact mentioned in her will. When John Henry married Mary Elizabeth Shaumloffel on Dec 15, 1747, in Orangeburg by the old monister John Giessendanner, Henry was about 21 years old. Notes for JOHN JOHANES SNELL: John Snell's father was Barnet aka Bernard Snell/Schnell whose father was Henry Schnell. That Barnet had a son John who moved to Virginia comes from a 'History of Clermont County, Ohio' written in the later 1800s. This is where a half brother of John's, Daniel Snell, settled and it is likely that the information in this history came from Daniel's children who would have never known John. Some would call this weak evidence of a connection with John but there it is. In my search for a connection with the John described above, I corresponded with a Pat Brooks who provided the following which may be of help here: "John Snell was first found recorded in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. Finding where he came from before arriving in the Greenbrier area on the Muddy Creek, is still work in progress. Searching out his part in the American Revolution, he was just the right age to have served and his children were associated with others that served in the Revolution. John Snell's name appears on the land records of Greenbrier County in 1779 when he purchased 321 acres on Muddy Creek. This land west of the Alleghaney Mountains was surveyed in his name. John Snell's name appears again in land records of Greenbrier County, Virginia, now West Virginia in 1793, 1795, and 1800. His estate was appraised at nearby Lewisburg on 25 Jan. 1806 and his wife Margaret was then taxed in 1807-09 in Lewisburg, Greenbrier County, VA.
