SNEED CREST: A lion of England or Pasant, gardant; a scythe (a pun on the handle, which is called a snead or snedye); sable on the tess point; fleur-de-lis of the second. The coat of arms is well known in heraldry and is subject to several interpretations. The lion at the top is taken to represent military prowess and the participation in the Holy Land Crusades, as well as many other wars. The fleur-de-lis was given for service at the battle of Pointers, thou some think that it refers to the mortality of man - "the flower of the field, which in the evening is cut down and withereth." SNEED MOTTO: "Nec apprimere nec oprima" which means "neither to oppress or be oppressed." EARLY FAMILY HISTORY: One of the first records of the family is the recording of a Henry de Snedye, of Tunstall and Snedye, County of Stafford, who was seized of lands in 1310, lands which had been in the family since the reign of Henry III. The first Sneeds recorded in the Americas, was in Virginia as early as 1670s. As the family grew, members move throughout Virginia and southward to North Carolina. By 1792 the Sneeds had populated parts of Virginia that were split off to form the states of Kentucky and West Virginia. As the family continued to grow, many members migrated to north to parts of Maryland and Ohio but the majority moved west to Indiana, Missouri and south to Tennessee and South Carolina. Today, Most Sneeds are still located in the Mid-Atlantic region, but are located every state throughout the country. Large numbers of Sneeds are also found in Texas and California.
