I am researching the lineage of the African-American Sneed Family of Hampton, Virginia. I am seeking information on my parternal grandfather, William Sneed, and my grandmother, Mattie Pigott Sneed. The 1900 US Census records have William Sneed in Chincoteague, Virginia living as a boarder with, I believe his brother, his brothers's wife and thier mother. There are unsubstantiated records that has him being born in Horntown, Virginia on January 20, 1875. During the 1920's and 1940's he leased or owned two boats, one which was the John W. Brown in which he sailed out of Hampton, Virginia. He carried cargo from North Carolina to Bridgeport, Connecticut. He married Mattie Pigott or Pickett around the 1910's. She is listed in the 1910 US Census records. She was the daughter of Rosetta Pigott from Postsmouth Villiage on Postsmonth Island. Postsmouth Island is of the southern tip of Ocracoke, North Carolina. |
