View Tree for Duncan McTavishDuncan McTavish (b. February 10, 1791, d. June 24, 1870)

Duncan McTavish (son of Donald McTavish and Mary McTavish) was born February 10, 1791 in Fearnach, Glassary, Argyle, Scotland, and died June 24, 1870 in Paisley, Ontario, Canada. He married Mary Robson on 1819 in Lanark County, Canada, daughter of Adam Robson and Mary Pott.

 Includes NotesNotes for Duncan McTavish:
kThe 1871 census lists Duncan as age 77, of Scotch ancestory, member of U. Presbyterian. [027 A 2, p. 51] He is listed as a farmer. Mary McTavish is listed as 71 years, born in Scotland, C.P. church [028, A. p. 65] This could be another Duncan.

1848 census of Huron District lists MrcTavish, Duncan, in Huron District [0T, 012, N. Easthope Township, 1850]

Information on immigration is from Public Archives of Ontario, as reported in Dobson, Scotish Settlers in North America, available in Brown County Library, Green Bay, WI

Duncan and Mary (Robson) McTavish must have left the Drummond-Elmsley area before l851; at least I have not found them in the l851 census for that region. On the other hand, I did find Alexander, Neil, and John in the N. Elmsley area in both the personal census and agricultural census. There was a Duncan McTavish in Paisley area in l851, but is he ours? I really don't have any solid info on Duncan, except infor from Margaret Graham Mctavish Bell of Saskatoon. According to Perth Courier, Duncan Jr died of consumption at the home of his father, Montague twnsp, 17 sept 1849. So Duncan and Mary went to Bruce county after 1849.

I did find in LDS archives, Scottish records, the following family, which fits the names of the 4 brothers (Alexander, Duncan, Neil, and John) who, according to Margaret Bell's info came out from Scotland:

Marriage of Donald McTavish and Mary McTavish, 3 July 1785, Glassary, Argyle, Scotland. Frame 357, Mll5ll4

Their children:
John, 29 Oct 1786, [my dates from census: 1784]
Duncan 10 Feb 1791 frame 104, C115112
Alexander 28 Feb 1793 fram 152, C115112 [1792, my date from census]
Donald 17 Nov 1798 frame 166 b. 15 Jan 1798, frame 152 C115114
Margaret 14 Feb 1808 frame 177
Neil B. 4 Feb 1808 frame 268 C115114 1806 my date from census]. 16 feb 1807 frame 262

I believe these are marriages in Presbyterian Congregation of Perth, Ont, 1840-1857 [marriages 1817-1839, C 3029}

Vol I of Marriages in Ont, has two Margaret McTavishes of Elmsley getting married in l850. Both Duncan and Alexander had daughters named Margaret, according to Marg. Bell, both born in 1821.
p. 247, Margaret McTavish of Elmsley to Alex. McDougall of North Sherbroook, feb. 1, 1850 Witnesses Robert Killock and Donald McTavish, Minister William Bain of St. Andrews Church, perth.
p. 275 Margaret McTavish of Elmsley to Roy Archibald of Montague, 22 Feb 1850, witnesses Donald McTavish and John McTavish. (Alex. and Margaret had a Donald] Minister Rev Wm Bain of St Andrews, Perth. [This is our McTavish, according to Neelin--dau. of Duncan and Mary ]
Vol l, p. 243. Margaret McTavish of Elmsley to James McLachlin of Middleton, 15 June 1849, witnesses William McLachlin and Donald McTavish, rev. Wm Bain. [This is Alex/Marg. Margaret]

Microfilm C3030, Public Archives of Canada, marriages Presbyterian Congregation of Perth, Ont, 1840-1857. Mary McTavish of Elmsley to Duncan McGregor of Carleton, 11 Feb. 1842. This Mary could be child of either Alex or Duncan.--This must be Alex's daughter.

There are a Duncan and Mary McTavish, bur. in St Andrew's Presbyterian Cemetery, Perth cty, Easthope N. Ref. PH 676-8 This is probably another family, as there were a Duncan McT m. to Mary Crerar in North Easthope, Perth county, October 20, 1846.

Neelin quotes Don Nisbet who quotes Cora McTavish: "Duncan and Mary McT. moved to Bruce Twp, Bruce Cty in the early 1850's and died there. Mary died after 1871. (In 1851 census, I found Neil, John, Alexander and Hugh in N. Elmsley, but no Duncan--he may have left by 1851.)
A transcript of Adam's {Robson} will, sent to {Neelin} by Don Nisbet who got it from Cora McT. It was dated 20 March, 1844, and in it he left 5 pounds to each of four daughters: Mary, wife of Duncan McTavish, Margaret, daughter of Alexander McTavish, Janet, wife of James Faighney, Jane, wife of John Clark of North Elmsley..."

Duncan McT is mentioned in the 1817 "census" of heads of households in Drummond Twp., Lanark County; the 1822 Assessment list of Drummon Twp., Lot l0, Concession 1, 100 acres (these are in Vol 2 of "Lanark Perth and Richmond Military Settlements/ Census and Assessments 1817-1822" by Mildred Livingston. (this from Neelin} Dict. of Scottish settlers in N. Am.: Duncan and Alexander McTavish arr. in Quebec 23 Aug. 1816, with Ducan settling on Lot 10 E Con 1, Drummond, and Alex. Lot 12 SW, Con 1, Drummond

Also from Neelin: According to St Andrew's Presbyterian Church/Marriages 1830-1887/ Baptisms 1830-1881 "The baptisms of children Adam (02-06-1832} Janet, bap. 1835, Donald (06-25 1838) Donald (06-26-1838) Robert (bap. 1842) At the time of the first, they lived on Drummon, Con 1, Lot l0; for the others on Elmsley, Con 8, Lot 15. I also found this on internet database.

Children of Duncan and Mary, christenings listed in K534211 (Mary and Margaret;) and J534211, John, chr Dec 19, 1824, Donald, chr. July 20, 1825, and Jean, 30 May, 1830.

In 1821 census in Drummond,Lanarck, Ontario, Duncan's household consists of himself, one woman and one daughter, with 3 in household.
