Notes for Joseph Zook:
JOSEPH ZOOKJoseph Zook was born in Bern Township on march 3, 1787.Joseph first married Anna Shook and they became the parents of six children. Then, as a widower, he married Catharine Whisler and they settled in Lancaster County, Pa. about a mile north of Chamberburg.Joseph and Catharine had five children including our ancestor Noah. The burying ground on the family plantation, the final resting place for many Zooks, is now known as Siloam Cemetery.
The years 1825-30 were years of great tragedy for Joseph Zook. His wife, Anna, died in childbirth on June 23, 1825, leaving him a widower with six infant children, the oldest under 8 years of age and the youngest but two days old.
His fathers' brother, Henry, died at Abraham's home on February 21, 1826, while on a visit to his brother and family, and he was buriedin Abraham's burial place there.Joseph's father Abraham's died September 19, 1826, his mother, Maria Kurtz Zook having died 15 years earlier.Joseph was actively engaged in conducting his business as a fuller and miller. His many bereavements and the demands of his business on his family were very heavy on him.His father's family of 11children were very closely knit in bonds of solicitude and affection, and Joseph was doubtless beneficiary of their help in caring for his infant children. In 1826, he was 39 years old and possessed substantial financial resources.
Three or four years later he and his family were providentially blessed by his marriage to a most estimable woman, Catharine Whisler, of Green Twp., Franklin County, Pa.He disposed of his mills and properties on the Conestoga and removed to Franklin County, where on March 29, 1834 he bought for $7,500, 27 acres of adjacent land traversed by a river and on which there was a grist mill and dam.During the rest of his life he was a farmer and miller with fine success.
Catharine bore him five children and she mothered them and the six children by his first wife with equal devotion so complete that descendants who knew her personally have told this writer of her fine maternal qualities and were lavish in praise and love for her.
