Genealogy in Leeds County Ontario
Family History
and
Online Sources

This site has been designed to provide Leeds County families
insight into the beginnings of the county as well as general information and history.

All contributions are welcome!

My primary focus has been on the Covey Family. Although many Covey families are documented throughout the United States and Canada, we cannot prove our origins. This site was created to provide information on our Covey family in order to place them in a specific family. Many of the Covey families I have been introduced to online have this in common; their families did not talk about their ancestors. Perhaps this was the way in the 1800’s and 1900’s. We’re hoping in the early 2000’s to blow this practice sky high!

My research has spread into other family names, including my husband’s side. Please feel free to scroll through our family links. All additions or corrections are most welcome.

Our family genealogies are indicative of most families in Leeds County. They were probably not exceptional people, but honest, hard working farmers, carpenters, fishermen, merchants. Nonetheless, they paved the way for the growth of the county. Some came to Leeds County from the United States; some came from Quebec; some came from Ireland; some from France;some from England. Their appearance in Canada marked the colonization of Upper Canada. All arrived looking to further their opportunities and enrich their lives. Although none were famous, all were integral in the history of the county and have left many descendents.

The following are direct lines:

My primary focus is my father’s Covey Family. Although many Covey families are documented throughout the United States and Canada, we cannot prove our origins. This site is to provide information on our Covey family in order to place them in a specific family. Our oldest known Covey ancestor is Samuel Covey who is documented in the Haldimand Papers in 1784. They were fishermen, logging people, and carpenters. I am descended from Samuel Covey’s son, Rinaldo. Our related Covey names are Stevens, Donaldson, and Patterson.

My secondary focus spread into my mother’s Darling Family. We believe John H. Darling came from Vermont to Prescott probably just before the War of 1812 broke out. I’m sure his family didn’t receive an “open arms” welcome and so kept traveling to Warren County, New York. They eventually returned to Canada to settle in Elizabethtown Township, Leeds County, Ontario. They were property owners, farmers, and shop keepers. I am descended from John H. Darling’s son, Walter. Related Darling names are Whitmarsh, Mott, and Beach.

The family trees kept branching and my next tree was provided by Glenna Webb regarding the Larose Family. We believe the Larose family originally came from France and settled in St. Lawrence County, New York, subsequently coming to Canada and settling in Leeds County, Ontario. I am descended from Isaac Larose. Related Larose names are Livingstone, and Nolan.

My husband’s Somerville Family tree was provided by Ford and Shirley Somerville. Due to the Potato Famine in Ireland in the 1840’s, John Somerville left County Tyrone, arriving in Canada. They settled in Morton, Ontario and became staunch citizens with much property. Vic is descended from John’s son, William. Related Somerville names are Earl, Halladay, and Cunningham.

The following are indirect lines:

Kevin Trickey of Ohio has provided me with the Trickey Family information. He phoned me to give permission to include his family history online. Kevin’s grandmother, Olive A. Covey, was a sister to my grandfather, Rinaldo Covey.

Garry Kelsey of Ontario has provided me with the Kelsey Family information. Garry’s grandmother, Ida Covey, was a sister to my grandfather, Rinaldo Covey.

I hope to add more trees as time goes on but hope that you will enjoy the submissions I have to offer at this point. Please feel free to scr
