1st January       Glass loweringand a dull drizzling muggy day.  Hardywent to pay Mr. Arkright's rent.  Johnwas plowing in the Low Carrington.  Imanaged Clem's Ledger: Clement and I walked this afternoon up the Carringtonsby the Wood and by the Road home.  PaidClement on account of this year's board and lodging £75.00.  Glass lowering and a dark, damp night.

2nd January      Glass loweringand a very foggy morning.  Clement wentby the 10.16 train to Matlock to pay his insurance.  I went to the Post Office.  Eliza went by the 11.46 train forBakewell.  Johnie received a note fromhis mother containing 2 1/2 ...  I saweda quantity of roots this afternoon.  1heavy shower of rain this evening.  Verydark night.  Glass lowering.

3rd January      Glass aboutstationary and a fine calm mild sunny morning. Clem went to Else's Mill and the Post Office.  Bretland killed 2 pigs this morning.  I sorted over the roots from the Little Ley.   I walked this afternoon by Raines farm tothe upper Carrington and by the road home again.  Some rain this evening.  Glass a little rising, dark night.

4th January       Glass rising,and a very fine, mild, calm, gray morning. I wrote a short note to Ned.  Iwent by the 11.41 train to Rowsley  andthen to the Bank, no dinner to day.  Ireturned by the 3 o'ck bus to Rowsley and by the 3.30 train to Darley.  Received Mr. Evans' bill to pay.  Eliza went to Wensley to dine.  Clem fetched her after Tea.  Thrashed beans to day.  Sent Bratby 2 pigs.

5th January       Glass loweringand a very wet comfortless day.  Iremitted Ned £20.  Heward for newspapersP.O. order and Jno: Gillon & Co. a P.O. Order for five pounds.  Received a note from Alfred and one fromParker.  Emma came from Wensley broughtsome apples and took some fowls (a couple) Thrashed some beans. A muggy wet dirty night.

6th January       Glass loweringand at much rain.  Mr & Mrs Clem andI went to the Old Church thismorning.  I dined at Fircliffe, did notgot to Church this afternoon.  Clem wentto the New Church thisafternoon.   I brought 14 eggs fromFircliffe.  Glass continued to lower.

7th January       Glassrising.  A sharp frost this morning and afine day.  I wrote to Parker about £5 Ireceived too little at the Bank when last there.  I prepared my papers etc for attending themonthly Bank meeting.  The glasscontinued to rise.  Wind N.E.    A fine calm starlight evening.

8th January       Glassrising.  Frosty and a fine WintersDay.  I left by the 10.16 train forAmbergate and Sheffield.  I dined at Brooks.  Called at Wilks, Chadburns and Rodgers'.  Bought a hat for 10/6.  I walked to Broomfield.  Took tea and slept there. A fine calmstarlight night.  Wind NE and frosty.

9th January       Glass rising andsharp frost.  I walked to the Bank .  Went over the minute book, attended themeeting till 2 o'clock.  Dined at Brooks'.  Bought 2 boxes biscuits.  Again called at Wilks & Radgers.  Bought sundries at Woodcocks.  Got a prescription of Dr Thompson.  Walked to Broomfield and slept there.

10th January     Glass stillrising and a fine winters day.  I took acab to the Wicker station, and by the 9.40 train to Woodhouse Mill.  Wilfred Vin: and 2 young Johnsons met onethere.  Walked to Rotherwood.  Dined, tea'd and slept there.  Paid Dick what I owed him.  He paid me for the Illustrated anddiscontinued it.   Fine moonlight frostyevening.

11th January     Glass fastrising.  A small fall of snow lastnight.  Very frosty fine day.  I walked to the Woodhouse Mill Station from Rotherwoodand by the 10.16 train to Ambergate and Darley, and got to Cowley todinner.  I found receipts when I got homefrom Evans, Heward Ned and Jno. Gillon & Co.

12th January     Glass very highand continues rising.  Thrashing oats today.  I sawed some wood for dining roomfire.  Cut up some papers and made theminto spills.  Received a note from Parkergiving one Bank Commission 976.6.2 Interest 243.9.9 Total profit £3419.9.0Salaries ..20 Exps 232.7.7

13th January     Glass stillrising, and a fine calm, sunny winters day. Mr. and Mrs. Clement went to the Old Church thismorning.  I went to the New Church thismorning.  Mr. and Mrs. Clement went tothe New Church thisafternoon.  A fine moon and starlightnight, and very frosty.  Thermometer thismorning 17 degrees.

14th January     Thermometer thismorning 8 degrees a very severe frost. Glass lowering.  the wind gettingto the South.  I wrote a long note toAlfred to Park Cottage.  Harrison was here thisforenoon and with Clem marked some trees for felling in the hedge rows.  Received a note from Mr. Ecclesfield.

15th January     Glass fastlowering.  Very frosty.  Thermometer this morning 15 degrees.  I wrote to Lawton ordering 60yards of cut stone for the Sough in the Barn Close.  Clem began felling trees by the LimestoneBank, Large Ley field.  Walter calledthis afternoon.  Fine moonlight night.

16th January     Glass ratherrising.  Thermometer 29 degrees thismorning.  I wrote to Wilks about a hamperhe should have sent last Friday.  Cut hayto day.  Jno. fetched some coal.  Frank came here to dinner from Matlock.  A very warm foggy evening and the barometerlowering. I sawed some wood for the dining room fire.

17th January     Glass loweredvery much last night and some drizzling rain this morning.  Killed the two remaining of the 12 pigs thismorning for Bratby.  Carting manure onthe Knowle field to day.  The pigsweighed 13 st 2 lb & 13st 6lb without the feet.  I sawed some wood for the dining roomfire.  Clem felled the poplar tree in LowCarrington.

18th January     Glass ratherrising till evening then falling.  I wentby the 11.41 train to Rowsley & by bus to Bakewell.  Was at the bank 1 ½  hour. Returned by the 2.40 bus to Rowsley and by the 3.10 train toDarley.  Some smart rain after 4 o'clock.  I sent Mr.Bathurst 30/- for Clem's & my subscription to the missionary society.  Clem returned alone from the Green to tea.

19th January     Glass fastlowering.  Much rain fell during lastnight; very close and foggy day. Winnowed some oats this forenoon. Arranged sundries from Wilks. Eliza returned from the Green this afternoon and Edward and Louisa Wasscame with her to spend a few days at Cowley. Glass below much rain & lowering.

20th January     Glass loweringand at near Stormy. Clem , Johnnie Edward Wass and I went to the New Church thismorning.  Eliza & Louisa Wass went tothe Old Church thismorning.  Clem Eliza E & L Wass wentto the New Church this afternoonand to tea at Wensley.

21st January     Glass ratherrising but a very rainy morning.  I wroteto W. Lockwood sending him an a/c of our Bakewell doings in 1855.  E. Wass left on horseback after breakfastleaving Louisa at Cowley.  Mr. and Mrs.Clem, E & L Wass went to tea at Mr. Belcher's.  Some soft snow fell this afternoon.  Glass rising.

22nd January    Glass rising and afine cool winter's day.  John Hardyplowed in the near Ley to day.  Iarranged a paper of watched B.Bank accompts. E and L Wass left here at Noon.  Mrs. Alsop came here and went with them.  Clem and I walked this afternoon in the KnowleWood & returned down the Carringtons.

23rd January    Glass lowered verymuch last night and much rain fell.  Clemwent to Matlock Bridge to settle withBratby for his wigs.  I went to the PostOffice and called at the Station about the things from Wilks, and I ordered andpaid for 10 cwt large coal.  I wrote toAmy saying I would remit her next Tuesday.

24th January     Glass last nightgot down to the last letter in stormy. Much rain fell during last night and continued this morning.  John went to plow in the Littleley, but hadto give up.  Some lightning at 9 o'clock tonight. Clem went to Else's Mill this afternoon to order some seed potatoes,oats, barley and beans.  Glass ratherrising.

25th January     Glass very lowbut a little rising this morning.  Somerain this forenoon, but afterwards very fine and windy.  I went to the Post Office.  Walter came here to dinner.  Clem took down and old worthless ash treedown at the top f the horsepool.  Lawton sent a man aboutthe store for the sough in the Barn field.

26th January     Glass rising anda fine winter's morning.  Jno. plowed inthe near Ley intending to finish it today. Old Gregory came to prune the gooseberry bushes.  I went to the Post Office.  Mr. and Mrs. Alsop came here to tea.  Two Misses Bathurst called this morning.  I walked to see Clem felling trees at the OldLime Kiln.

27th January     Glass rising anda fine healthy winters day. Mr. & Mrs. Clem and I went to the Old Church thismorning.  I dined at Fircliffe, and Watand I went again this afternoon.  Clemwent to the New Church thisafternoon.  A fine moonlight evening.

28th January     Glass loweringand some smart showers till 9 o'clock.  Mr. and Mrs. Clem went by the 9.36 train toBakewell.  I wrote to Frank.  Sent Jos Walker a card with the George StDividends.  This afternoon some smartsnow storms with high wind.  Received anote from Amy.  Very frosty.

29th January     Glassrising.  A very sharp frost thismorning.  Thermometer 11 degrees.  I remitted Amy £40 at sight.  All the horses carting dung into the Knowlefield.  Clem felling trees at the OldLime Kiln.  Mrs. Clem went to Wensley todinner.  Frank called this afternoon.  Clem cut some chips this afternoon and Isawed for 2 hours some wood for the dining room fires.

30th January.    Glass rising andagain a very sharp frost this morning. Thermometer again 11 degrees. Again carting dung into the Knowle field.  Clem again felling at the Old Lime Kiln.  Johnie, Rebecca and Emma went to spend theday at Wensley.  I walked to Clem at theLime Kiln.  I sawed some wood thisafternoon for the dining room fires.

31st January     Glassrising.  Thermometer 20 degrees.  A fine calm sunny morning.  Again carting dung for turnips in the LittleLey field.  Clem felled 2 ash trees inthe hedge row in the Little Ley.  I wentto the Post Office.  Mr. and Mrs. Clemmade a call at Fircliffe this afternoon. Miss Wyatt called this forenoon. A thaw this afternoon but changed to sharp frost in the evening.

1st February     Glass rising, asharp frost.  The thermometer at 8degrees.  I remitted Miss Lomas £9.0.0for Johnnie.  I wrote Mrs. Henry.  Received a note from Brown of our Bank AnnualMeeting.  Received a Geo: St. BankReport.  Dividend 17 p.c. in a card fromBarber.

2nd February    I arranged forgoing to the Annual Bank Meeting on Monday morning.  I went by the 9.16 train to Rowsley and fromthence by bus to Bakewell.  I went overthe Balance Book at the Bank, took chops at the Rutland and returned bythe 3.10 train from Rowsley.

3rd February    A fine wintersday.   I went to the New Church thismorning.  Clem went to the Old Church this morningalone.  Mr. and Mrs. Clem went to the New Church thisafternoon.  A fine starlight evening.

4th February     A fine wintersday.  I left by the 9.36 train forAmbergate and Sheffield, attended a preparatorybank meeting at 12.30.  I had no dinnertoday.  I went to Broomfield to tea and sleepand where I also slept and took tea on Tuesday and Wednesday night.  A fine windy evening.

5th February     A very fine butwindy day.  I went by bus to Sheffield.  Called on Wilks.  Attended another preparatory bank meeting at11.30.  Dined at Brooks.  Called at Dr. Thompson's and walked to Broomfield to tea, andslept there.  Mr. and Mrs. Ibbotson spentthe evening with us at Broomfield.  Very windy night.

6th February     A very windy wetmorning.  I went by the 10.30 train to Sheffield.  Attended the Annual Bank Meeting at11.30.  Dined at Brookes.  Paid Wilks. Bought some horse powders.  Calledand saw Dr. Thompson.  Walked to Broomfield to tea andsleep.  Clifton returned from Leeds where he hadbeen reading a paper.

7th February     Glass rising anda very fine winters day.  I left Broomfield by a cab to theWicker Station at 9 o'clock and by the 9.46train to Masbro, Ambergate and Darley.  Iwalked home getting there about 3.30.  Ifound a letter from Alfred respecting his wife's burial place.  Glass rising and fine evening.

8th February     Glass rising anda fine day.  I had a severe cold came onlast night with sore throat.  I remainedin the house all the day.  The three menspreading the lime to day in the Top Carrington.  Received a railway cheque of Frank's and anote from Ned.  Glass lowering.

9th February     Glass loweringand a wet day.  I had one of the worstnights in bed last night that I ever had in my life by reason of my severecold.  Had my breakfast in bed thismorning and remained all the day in the house. Received my own, Frank's and Clem's cheque papers for

10th February   A fine day.  I was still suffering with my cold and didnot again leave the house.  Clem went tothe Old Church this morning& Eliza & Clement went to the New Church thisafternoon.  Old Hardy was very unwelltoday.  Glass lowering.

11th February   Glasslowering.  A very dull muggy day and somevery heavy rain this afternoon.  Clemattended an Union meeting.  Went by rail& bus and returned with Mr. Vawdrey. Mrs. Clem dined and spent the evening with Miss Bower.  Walter called this forenoon.  I was still unwell and confined to the house.

12th February   Glass lowered muchduring last night and very much heavy rain fell.  Our burn bank full and some drainsoverflowing.  I managed Frank's &Clement's accompts as respects the Bank Dividends etc.  Clement and I walked this afternoon to the Adams field to examineClem's fellings in the fence.  Finemoonlight even.

13th February   Glass rising but avery dull damp morning.  Clem felled thelast of the marked trees in the Adams field.  I wrote to Dick.  Much smart rain all this afternoon and till 9in the evening.  Received a note fromWoollatt and Co and one from Barber Geo: St. Bank.  Frank came here to dinner and we managed hiscash accompt.

14th February   Glass rising thismorning.  Very calm, very warm andsunny.  I wrote to Frank Appleby.  Clem lopped the trees he had felled in the Adams field.  Finished spreading the lime in the Upper Carrington field.  Some smart rain at noon.  Clem and I walked this afternoon up theCarringtons and by the road back.

15th February   Glass rising butdull, damp morning.  I wrote to Ned andto C. Trevor, Inland Revenue office, London as to legacyduty.  Clem went to Elses Mill, and thePost Office today.  Began to plow theremains of unplowed Low Carrington. Clement and I walked to the Adams field.  Received a note from Frank for me to orderhim 3 or £500 Brazils.

16th February   Glass rising, butagain a very gloomy, damp morning.  Isawed some wood for the dining room fires. Clem and I walked to the Adams Close and brought some wood for diningroom fires.  A very warm day.  Clem and I walked this afternoon to the gateby Holmes' and round the Horsepool.  Finemoonlight evening.

17th February   Glass rising, buta great change in the weather.  A verycold east wind, and a dull gloomy day. Mr. and Mrs. Clem went to the New Church thismorning.  Mrs. Clem dined atWensley.  Clem and I walked thisafternoon to the gate to Holmes' and round the Horsepool.  My continued cold prevented me going tochurch.  Very cold.  Thermometer 25 degrees.

18th February   Glass lowering andintensely cold day.  Thermometer 25degrees.  Clem and I went to the Adams field andbrought down a basket of firewood.  Elizawent to dine at Wensley.  Hardy went to asale at Winstons.  A small portion ofsnow fell to day.  Jno carted 2 loadsstone for Barn Close sough.

19th February   Glass ratherrising this morning but a continuance of very cold weather.  Thrashed a few oats this morning.  Received a long note from Dick.  Clem and I walked to the Adams field andbrought down a basket of firewood for the dining room.  Matthew and both Hardys finished their day atthe Barn field sough.

20th February   Glass continuesrising.  A little snow fell thisforenoon.  Very cold and gloomy.  Mr. and Mrs. Clem went to make a call atFircliffe this forenoon.  R. Wildgoosecame to put down the boiler etc in the washouse & the new stone in the backkitchen.    Paid Clement on a/c of mysalary making it now paid on a/c £100. Received acknowledgement from Mrs. Hartop.

21st February   Glass rising and apartial thaw.  N. Wind.  I received a note from Edwin respecting theplantations cottage furniture, and which I answered to him in London.  Mrs. Clem went to Bakewell & took our 3cheques for our C.St. dividends.  Waltercalled this forenoon.  Clem walked to theP.O. with him.  I fetched a basket woodout of Adams field.

22nd February  Glasslowering.  Wind getting somewhatwest.  Began sowing the beans in theKnowle field.  I wrote Gibbs for acatalogue of seeds etc.  Mrs. Belchercalled with 3 AntiChrsystal papers to sign. I walked to the Adams field and brought a basketof firewood.  Continued sowing the beansassisted by 2 potters horses.

23rd February  Glass rising and amost beautiful sunny day.  Continuedsowing the beans and assisted again by 2 of Potter's horses.  Clem stripped one of the trees he had felledin the New Field.  Mrs. Alsop called thisafternoon.  A fine mooonlight night.  Glass rising. Frosty this evening.

24th February   Glass rising thismorning.  Frosty.  Thermometer 28 degrees.  Mr. and Mrs. Clement went to the Old Church thismorning.  I remained at home not beingwell enough to go to church.  Clementwent to the New Church thisafternoon.  One of the ewes lambed acouple this afternoon.  No frost thisevening.  A change in weather.

25th February   Glass rising and afine calm mild morning.  Continued sowingbeans.  Potters 2 horses assisting.  Clem finished stripping the trees which he felledin New Field and I assisted him.  Clemreceived a note from Geo: Homes about his New Cottage.  Paid Clem on a/c board and lodging £10.

26th February   Glass lowering andsome rain fell this morning.  Continuedsowing beans in the Knowle field.  I wentby the 11.41 train to Rowsley and by bus to Bakewell.  Was 1 ½ hours at the bank.  Dined at the Rutland and returned bythe bus for the 3.10 train to Darley. Glass rising and fine calm evening.

27th February   Glass rising and abeautiful calm mild sunny morning.  Beckywent to Wensley.  Finished sowing thebeans.  Mr. and Mrs. Clem went to Wensleyto tea.  I went to the New Field andbrought down a basket of chips.  I saweda quantity of wood for the dining room fires. Robert began digging the land over and about the newly covered sough inthe Barn Close.

28th February   Glass rising, andthough dull a fine calm morning.  Found aduck's nest this morning with 10 eggs in it. Plowing in the blands today.  Mr.and Mrs. Clem went to Stonecliffe to look at the brewing vessels for sale ontomorrow.  I went to the Knowle Wood andbrought down a basket of beech chips.  Iwalked round the Horse pool this afternoon.

29th February   Glass rising, anda fine calm sunny morning.  J. HardySenr. went to a sale at Stancliffe Hall. Jno. finished plowing the 6 lands. I walked to the Newfield & brought a basket of beech chips out ofthe Knowle wood.  I returned down the 2Carringtons.  Received a railway chequefor Frank £5.13.9.  Glass rising.

lst March          Glass continuesto rise and a beautiful day.  Rolled theclover in the Broad Meadow.  Clem wrotefor some seeds to Gibbs.  I was veryunwell to day with a disorder'd stomach, and sat with a fire in my Bed Room allthe day.  Mrs. Norman dined and tea'dhere.  Recd a note from Parker with aticket of a £500 Brazn Bond purchased.

2nd March       Glass very highnear set fair and a beautiful but cool day. I was confined to the house being unwell.  Mr. and Mrs. Clement went to the Old Church this morning andClem only to the New this afternoon. Meggat calved a fine cow calf last night.  Glass stationary this evening.

3rd March        Glass a little risingand at set fair.  A cool dullish morning,but a fine winters day.  Mr. and Mrs.Clem went by the 10.16 train to Matlock. Recd a fine roan cow calf from Josh Marsden.  I wrote to Clifton to order Clem 10or 15S GR Bank shares.  I also wrote toParker.  Miss Bower called & broughtsome Jerusalem Artichokes.

4th March        Glass ratherfalling.  A cool fair dull morning.  Mr. Belcher called.  I wrote to Alfred at 42 St James' Square, Bath.  Received a note from E. Smith & Son No.1George Street and answered.  Clem sold astick Josephine to Josh Marsden for 10 guineas. Brazed and rolled Top Carrington. I walked to the New Field.  Iprepared for going to the Bank tomorrow. Glass fast lowering.  Paid Clementon behalf of my board & lodging £10.

5th March        Glass lowering,but a fair, fine cool winters day.  Mr.and Mrs. Walter and Douglas dined here. Frank came for a couple of hours this forenoon.  Mrs. Alsop called this afternoon.  I walked and Clem this forenoon to the NewField and down the long field back again. Glass lowering.

6th March        Glassstationary.  Very cold and gloomy.  John and the 3 horses plowing in the LittleLey to day.  I went by the 11.41 train toRowsley and by the bus to Bakewell.  Wentover the bank balances.  Dined at the Rutland and returned bybus for the 3.10 Rowsley train.  A verydark, cold evening.

7th March        Glass ratherrising.  I wrote to Dick.  I walked to the New Field this forenoon.  Received a note from John Booth.  I walked this afternoon round the Horse pooland Clem I and Rebecca walked to the Hoult to look at the moss on the steepbank.  Clem dug about the calf CroftHedge.  Glass rising.

8th March        Glass stationarythis morning, and a sharp white frost.  Iwrote to John Booth, declining to lend him £10. Clem sent Walter 5 quarters of oats at 1/3 per stone.  Wrote to Lawton for 20 yardsmore stone for completing the sough down to the pond.  Clem and I walked to the top of the LowCarrington.  He was digging about thehedge.  Glass lowering.

9th March        Glass lowering,but a fair, cold day.  Mr. and Mrs.Clement went to the Old Church this morning andto the New this afternoon.  I went to theNew this morning.  I walked thisafternoon to the top Horse pool gate. Found 4 of Reyne's cows in the field. Glass fast lowering.

10th March      A very dull calmmorning and the glass lowering.  Clemwent by the 9.36 train to attend an Union meeting.  Killed the old white sow this morning.  I received notes from Alfred, Parker, FrankAppleby and E. Smith and Son sharebrokers. I walked to meet Clem returning from Bakewell.

11th March      Glass ratherrising and a fine cool winters day.  Iwrote to Parker.  John took the oldkilled sow to Bratby and went to Bonsall for a young sow.  I walked to Knowle Wood and brought down abasket of beech wood chippings. Mr. and Mrs. Clement went to tea to Fircliffeand to a prayer meeting in the Girls' Darley school.  Glass much lowered today.

12th March      Glass rising thismorning.  Very cold and windy and offeredto snow.  The cow/cowley/calved a cow calfat one o'clock thismorning.  Mrs. Clement with Mrs. Walterleft by the train at 10.15 for Derby to order a smallbed for Rebecca.  Clem went to Wensleyand bought a roan cow calf of Josh Marsden. I fetched 2 baskets chippings from Knowle.

13th March      Glass rising.  A very sharp frost and nipping cold.  I wrote to Tho Gibbs & Co andGoodwin.  Thrashing oats to day.  Matthew doing the sough near the pond.  Mrs. Alsop came here to tea.  I walked to the Knowle Wood both before andafter dinner and brought down each time a basket of beech chippings.  Got in remains of beans.

14th March      Glass rising.  Barometer at fair.  Thermometer at 22 degrees.  Very sharp frost, bitter cold and windy.  Robert made a new sough from Hardy'sCottage.  Frank came here to dinner, andwe arranged his accompt.  I walked thisafternoon to the Far Ley, the Hoult and to the Knowle Wood.  Received a note from F. Appleby giving me thelast 6 years Hallam Bad debt.

15th March      Glass stationaryand continuing very very cold.  MaryClegg left to day having been our servant years.  I walked this afternoon to the KnowleWood.  Saw the woodman and I bespokeabout 3 cords of copice wood.  Glasslowering and a very high cold equinoctial wind.

16th March      Glass lowering, avery windy cold day.  I went to the New Church this morning,and Clem went without Eliza to the Old Church both before andafter dinner.  He dined atFircliffe.  Eliza went to the New Church thisafternoon.  Came on very smart rain at 7 o'clock this evening.

17th March      Glass lowering andvery much rain fell last night and continued till 6o'clock this morning.  Hardy sold atBakewell Market 2 cows for £28 viz spotted Ayrshire and Bakewell.  Got from Joseph Marsden a calf red back.  Thrashed some beans to day.  A fair day and glass stationary.

18th March      Glass ratherlowering, a very dull calm morning. Again thrashed some beans.  JohnHardy went to Matlock to a wedding of Rosanna's brother.  Bell Wass & aMiss Lucas dined and tea'd here today. Clem and I walked this afternoon to Wilmots to order about 100 larchpoles for fencing.  I received a notefrom Lockes.

19th March.     Glass lowering, some trifling rain fell lastnight and this morning.  John went toBeely for some seed corn and to Else's Mill. Amy and Johnie came by the 4.46 train this evening.  Clem went to meet them at the station.  Hardy went to a sale at Buckovers and bought5 18 gallons beer barrels.  Glass risingwind north.

20th March      Glass rising.  A dull fair mild morning.  John finished plowing the Little Ley.  Hardy took the ewes and lambs into the CrossGreen field this morning.  I went by the11.46 train to Rowsley and by bus to Bakewell. Went through the bank ledger. Lunched at the Rutland and returned bythe 3.10 train to Rowsley.

21st March - Good Friday                    Glasslowering but a fair calm mild day.  Iwent to the Old Church this morning andstay'd the sacrament.  I dined atFircliffe and came home to tea.  Mrs.Vawdrey took tea here.  Mr. and Mrs.Clement went to the New Church thismorning.  Glass rising, and a finemoonlight night.

22nd March     Glass rising thismorning.  A slight frost, fine andsunny.  Robert began repairing the roadfrom the stable towards the public road. I prepared for going to Rotherwood on Monday morning.  Very cold, no frost.  Glass lowering.  Moonlight night.

23rd March- Easter Day           Glasslowering, but a fine cold winters day. Mr. and Mrs. Clem and I went to the New Church this morning andstay'd sacrament.  Mr. and Mrs. Clem wentto the New Church this afternoon,also Mrs. Hissey.  I walked about thefarm this afternoon.  Glass lowering.

24th March      Glass lowering buta fine cold winters day.  I left by the10.16 train for the Woodhouse Junction. Went to look at a brown mare at Woodhouse.  Mr. and Mrs. Richard met me there in thephaeton.  I dined and slept atRotherwood.

25th March      Glasslowering.  A very cold high windyday.  Dick and I went to Mr. Amory's thisforenoon to look at his pigs etc, then went to his New Works for some time andthen to the Old Works.  Walked over hiswood this afternoon.  He was busy gettingout some young oaks, ashes etc for planting. Glass rising.

26th March      Glass rising thismorning.  A very cold day.  I bfasted at Rotherwood and left WoodhouseMill Station at 10.16 for Ambergate and Darley. Received a note from Alfred.  Iwalked this afternoon about the farm for two hours.  Received T. Gibbs and Co's acknowledgement.  Fine, very cold night.  Glass rising.

27th March      Glass rising thismorning.  I wrote to Horation asking himto buy Clem 5 stirks if he could.  I alsowrote part of a note to Alfred.  MissBower & Lissey Fletcher dined here. Johnie and I walked to the Knowle Wood and brought down a basket ofbeech chippings.  Johnie and I assistedburning rubbish in the Lower Carrington this afternoon.

28th March      Glasslowering.  A very sharp frost thismorning with strong ice.  I posted a noteto Alfred, also to E. Smith & Sons giving them till April 15th to buy Clem15 G&R Bank shares at 12/4.  Johniespent the day at the Rectory.  Mr. and Mrs.Clement and Amy went to tea at Wensley. I spudded this afternoon in the Water Ley.

29th March      Glass rising thismorning, a sharp white frost, very fine sunny day.  Eliza, Amy and Johnie left in the phaeton at9.20 for Bakewell.  Jno. drove 7 lambs yesterdayfrom 4 ewes.  Received a note from Dickrespecting a 2 years old filley for £25 or a 4 years old for £45.  Got down a portion of cord wood from theKnowle Wood this afternoon.  I cut aquantity of wood for dining room.

30th March      Glass rising.  A very sharp white frost this morning.  Amy, Johnie and I went to the New Church thismorning.  Mr. and Mrs. Clem to the Old Church.  Amy, Clem and I went to the New Church thisafternoon.  Eliza went to Wensley thisafternoon.  An ewe lambed a dead lamb thisforenoon.  Glass lowering, starlightnight.

31st March       Glasslowering.  A very sharp white frost thismorning.  An ewe lambed 3 fine lambs at 1o'ck this morning and another one lamb. I wrote to Dick to say Clem would have the 2 years old brown filley£25.  I spudded in the Water Ley thisafternoon.  Louis Vawdrey spent the dayhere.

1st April                       Glasslowering.  A very sharp white frostagain.  Fine sunny day.  I wrote to John J. Wheat & S. Harrisonabout Jessie's advertisement.  I went topay Mr. Wilmot for some wood Clem bought of him.  Began taking down the hedge in the NewField.  Mr. and Mrs. Clem Amy and Johniewent to Fircliffe to tea.  A very warmday.  Windy.  Glass lowering.

2nd April          Glass fastlowering.  No frost.  A very fine sunny windy mild morning.  Hygrometer very high.  2 carts began carting stone for the new wallin the Barn Close.  Two ewes each lambedone lamb.  I set Robert to work forremains of the week stubbing the hedge in the Adams Close.  I walked to Knowle Wood and brought down abasket of beech chippings.

3rd April          Glass got downto rain, and very much fell nearly all the day. I went by the 9.36 train to Rowsley and by the bus to Bakewell, and wentthrough the Bank balances.  I bought Clemof Mr. Bowman 10 cwt cake.  I returned bythe bus to Rowsley for the 12.30 train. I called & paid Bamford all that Clem owed him up to this day.

4th April           Glass rising,and a fine sunny spring morning, but a short hail storm at noon.  I arrangedClem's accompt, drawing a cheque to pay for his 15 S & R Bank Shares.  Clem went to Wensley to purchase a calf ofWm. Marsden.  The roan cow Marsden calveda bull calf this morning.  Received anote from Dick having bought a filley & from Horatio having bought 5stirks.

5th April           Glass muchlowering.  A white frost thismorning.  Hardy left before 6 o'ck thismorning to fetch 5 stirks from Chesterfd. Jno left by the 11.41 train to fetch a filley from Baslow.  Frank called this afternoon.  He, Clem and I walked to the Knowle Wood tolook at 2 larches Harrison had marked for one.  Hardy returned with 5 good stirks and Johnwith Kate the brown filley.  A smartshower this afternoon.

6th April           Glasslowering, but a fine mild growing day.  Idid not go to church being unwell and taking Dr. Thompson med.  Clem went to the Old Church this forenoonand dined with Walter.  Amy and Elizawent to the New Church thisafternoon.  Fine starlight frostyevening.  Glass rising.

7th April           Glass risingand a white frost this morning.  Somesmart rain for an hour, then fine and sunny. I wrote to Dick and Alfred.  Ialso prepared to remit Horatio from Sheffield for the 5 stirkshe bought Clem  Paid Clem on a/c of myboard etc £25.0.0.  Starlight night.

8th April           Glass loweringand a wet morning.  I left by the 10.16train for Sheffield where I arrived at12.20.  Made several calls this day.  Dined at Brooks and then took a cab to Broomfield to tea and tosleep.  Very much heavy rain thisafternoon.  Got my umbrella exchanged atBrookes.  Rainey night.  Glass lowering.

9th April           Glass risingand a most beautiful sunny growing day. I walked to the Bank and went through the minutes, and attended themeeting till 2.30.  Dined at Brookes andwalked to Broomfield to tea and againslept there.  Mrs. Henry and Clif were goneto dine and tea at Ecclesal Grange.  Afine moonlight night.  Glass rising.

10th April         Glass loweringand a dull morning.  I left Broomfield at 9.45 andwalked to Sheffield.  Made several purchases.  Again dined at Brookes.  Walked to the Wicker station and by the 1.25train to Ambergate and by the 4.20 train to Darley and walked home.  Some very smart rain from 12 o'ck the remainsof the day.  Glass lowering.

11th April         Glass risingand a fine mild sunny morning, but came on rain this afternoon.  John carted stone for the new fence and Hardygot down 4 loads of the wood from the old Adams fieldhedge.  I walked both before and afterdinner to look at Robert and Matthew who were stubbing up the old hedge in theAdams Close.  A very dark, dull, rainy night.

12th April         Glass loweringthis morning.  Very much heavy rain felllast night which prevented John carting stone. Received a note from Alfred saying he would join Clem and I to Scotland.  I walked to the New Field this forenoon.  Robert did not come to the hedge clearingtill noon.  Glass rising & starlight night.

13th April         Glass risingand a fine growing sunny warm day.  Iwent to the New church this morning and Mr. and Mrs. Clem went to the Old.  Clem and Amy went to the New Church this afternoon.  I walked this afternoon to the top Horse PoolGate.  A very hot afternoon.  Glass fast rising.  Fine, calm, starlight night.

14th April         Glassrising.  A cold N.E. wind.  Fair, but damp & gloomy.  Clem left by the 9.36 train to attend a boardmeeting and to see Cook as to mouthing Kate. I wrote to Ned.  I went both foreand afternoon to the New Field and got Robert to saw some branches from severaltrees.  Very cold and much wind.

15th April         Glass continuesto rise, a very cold windy sunny day.  Icollected a quantity of chips in the New Field this forenoon.  Walter called this morning to arrange for ourgoing to Barnbro next week.  I had a longtalk with G. Holmes on my way to the New Field. Mr. and Mrs. Clem went an evening lecture at the Girls School Room.  Starlight night.

16th April         Glass stillrising.  A very cold, windy sunnymorning.  Thrashing wheat today.  John took Kate ysterday to Cooks to bemouthed etc.  Recd a note from Mr Sharmanand which I acknowledged.  I went and hada talk with Walter Holmes about his pidgeons. I walked to the New Field this afternoon.  Recd. Clem's transfer from E. Smith &Son.  A dark cloudy night.

17th April         Glass ratherlowering and a dull cold cloudy morning. Clem sold his thrashed wheat to Else @ 26/6 for 14 stones.  Again thrashing wheat.  I returned to E Smith & Son, Clem'stransfer of 15 S & R Bank Shares. Recd a note from B Wake respecting an umberella mistake in Sheffield.  I assisted Clem in removing severalshrubs.  A dull very cold night.  Glass lowering.

18th April         Glass again alittle lowering, but a sunny morning. Still very cold but calm. Winnowing wheat to day.  Johncarting stone to the new fence with the 2 mares and 2 carts.  Mrs. Belcher called to day.  I received a note from Alfred from Bath.  I did not leave the house to day.  I had my breakfast in bed having a badhoarseness and cough.  A slight showerthis evening.

19th April         Glass rising,and a fine cool sunny morning.  I had avery severe coughing in bed last night. My breakfast in bed again.  Imanaged Clem's ledger accompt, and struck a balance this day, including hisBrasiln and Canada coupons due June& July.  I sent a note to John Potterto step down and look at sundry little jobs I want doing.

20th April         Glass risingand a white frost this morning.  Veryfine calm and sunny day.  I was still toounwell to leave the house.  Clem went tothe Old Church thismorning.  Amy and Eliza both before andafternoon to the New Church.  Clem this afternoon remained at home withme.  Out of the sun a cold frost in allthe day.

21st April         Glassstationary this morning and another white frost.  Calm and sunny day.   John with two carts and the mares wereloading stone to the new fence to day.  Isent a note to W. Holmes complaining of his pidgeons.  Paid Clem by transfer to his ledger the remains of my board and lodging forthe year.  £55.

22nd April        Glass loweringthis morning.  A great change in theweather from very cold to very warm. Calm and airey.  John carted stoneto day with 2 carts and the 3 horses.  Myhealth (Dieu Merci) very much better this morning.  Clem posted a note to Alfred to Bath and I inclosedone to Dick who was there on a visit. Mr. and Mrs. Clem went to a Lecture at Darley Girls School Room.  I wrote to Wilks.

23rd April        Glassrising.  A very warm dull morning.  Amy left us for Longworth by the 10.16train.  Pottatoing to day.  I walked to the Horse Pool far gate.  Looked out a quantity of wood for the diningroom fires.  Frank began digging out thefoundation for the new stone wall.  Elizawent to Matlock a shopping.  Jno. cartedthis afternoon stone from the bottom of the lane for new fence.

24th April         Glass ratherlowering.  Cold east wind.  John with 2 carts & the horses cartingstone to day.  Again pottatoing in theLittle Ley.  Blanche calved a white cowcalf at 11.30 last night.  Clem and Iwalked this afternoon to the New Field and by the Top Carrington.  Bamford called about the steaming apparatusat Wirksworth and Clem agreed to take it at 9 pounds.  Glass lowering.  Starlight.

25th April         Glass continuesto lower.  A fine sunny morning.  All the 3 horses mangolding thismorning.  Eliza went this morning toWensley.  I managed my fishing tackle forScotland yesterday.  Some thunder this afternoon, and a smartishrain.  Walter called this forenoon.  I walked with him to Darley Bridge.  I arranged with a Holmes and Bamford to fetchthe steaming apparatus.

26th April         Glass loweredvery much last night, and some rain fell. A very calm, wet morning.  Verydull.  Jno with 2 carts and the 2 marescarted stone for the new wall.  I drew acheque for £9 to pay for steaming apparatus. Finished carting stone for the new wall to day.  Glass rising this evening.

27th April         Glassrising.  A very cold day.  A trifling fall of hail this forenoon.  My cough was very bad to day.  Clem sent John on Hector to desire Mr. Evansto pay me a professional visit and which he did this evening.  Neither Clem nor Eliza went to church today.  They staid at home on myaccount.  Mr. Evans saw me professionallythis evening.

28th April         Glassrising.  A slight white frost thismorning.  Clem went by the 9.30 train toattend an union meeting.  I wrote toParker respecting our Buxton branch. Mrs. Alsop called this afternoon. She and Eliza went by train to Cromford en route to the Green.  A trifling hail storm this afternoon.

29th April         Glass ratherrising.  A slight frost and a calm brightsunny morning.  I had a severe coughingin bed last night.  Getting in theremaining stack of wheat to day.  I didnot leave the house on a/c of my cough. I wrote to Nicholson about his selling Jessie by auction at Lamberts' onthe 13th of May.  A lamb died today.  A very cold dull day.  Glass rising.

30th April         Glassrising.  Thermometer this morning 34degrees.  Some rain fell during lastnight, and a shower this morning of small soft snow.  Mr. Vawdrey called this morning.  Mr. Evans called to see me.  All the 3 horses and carts carting limemixture on the Horse pool.  Clem walkedthis evening to the station to fetch me a bottle of medicine from Mr.Evans. 

1st May                        Glassrather lowering this morning. Thermometer at 32 degrees.  Much cold wind and a shower of snow.  finished carting lime mixture on the HorsePool.  Frank called this morning.  Jno. Potter Junr hung the new door into thestable and likewise a new rope to the bell on the house.  Eliza returned from the Green this forenoon.

2nd May                      Glassrose last night.  A white frost thismorning and a continuance of very cold weather. I was still confined to the house. Clem had a sore throat this morning. Kate returned from Cooke who had had her to break at Bakewell.  She was put in the plow with Bess thisafternoon and was very tractable.  Starrynight.

3rd May                       Glassrising, rather warmer this morning.  Iwrote to Nicholson and to Ned.  Mr. Evanscalled to see me this forenoon.  Jno.carted some coal this forenoon.  OldHardy plowed with the 2 mares in the Little Ley this forenoon and in theafternoon with Bess and Kate.  Robert wasworking today at the New Field hedge.

4th May                       Glassrising, a very cold day.  None of us wentto church to day.  Clem had a sore throatand a cold.  Rebecca a bad cold also.  My cough much better but my stomach out oforder.  Glass rather lowering thisevening.  A frosty starlight night.

5th May                       Glassrather lowering and a white frost this morning and very cold.  Tommy Goose began the new wall at the top ofthe Long Field.  I wrote to Parkers.  Robert improved with stone round the GinRace.  Jno with the 2 mares plowed in theLittle Ley this forenoon & with Bess & Kate in the afternoon.

6th May                       Glasscontinues to lower.  A very very coldeast windy morning.  Jno did the samework exactly as yesterday.  Hardy withHector horse hoed yesterday and to day the beans in the Knowle Field.  Mr. and Mrs. Clement made a morning call onthe Bathursts Washingtons and Miss Bower. I received a note from Alfred from London.  Mrs. Alsop took tea here.  The calf Roaney died to day.  Glass lowering.

7th May                       Glassvery low and fast lowering.  A cold andvery windy day.  Looking like rain.  Hardy with Hector finished hoeing the beans           . Jno with Bess and Jessie plowed in the Little Ley all the day.  I received a note from Parker about his firstBank visit to Buxton.  Hardy brush harrowedthe Horse Pool this afternoon. Tommy  Goose was at the new wallto day.

8th May                       Glassrising.  Very cold and windy.  I wrote to Johnie.  Mr. and Mrs. Walter and their 3 male sproutscalled and sat an hour this forenoon. John finished the Little Ley headlands plowing to day with Kate, Bessand Jessie.  Mrs. Alsop came to tea.  Tommy Goose was at the new wall to day.  Clem sold 2 lambs to Tomlinson and one toSwindle to day.  A few trifling showers.

9th May                       Glasscontinues to rise.  Rather warmer thismorning.  Calm and cloudy.   I posted a long note to Alfred to London to day.  I wrote to Dick to say I could not attend ournext monthly bank meeting.  Hector &Bess thrashed wheat for an hour this afternoon. I walked out for the first time for 13 days both this fore andafternoon.

10th May         Glass ratherfalling, and a dull morning and looking like rain.  Clem lent old Bentley his winnowing machineto day.  I wrote to Mrs. Hartop.  I walked out an hour before dinner, andRebecca and I walked for near 2 hours this afternoon.  Servant was taken very seriously ill thismorning.  Her father and mother came tosee her.  The latter remained here.

11th May         Glass fastlowering.  A very fine warm day.  Mr. and Mrs. Clem went to the New Church thismorning.  She dined at Wensley.  Reb. and I walked this forenoon to the NewField and back by the Long Field.  Iwalked this afternoon to Holmes' Farm Buildings.  I drove 9 pidgeons off the lints in theLittle Ley.

12th May         Glass continuesto lower.  Very fine, calm andsunny.  I wrote to Nicholson aboutselling Jessie.  Hardy took the whitebullock to Bakewell fair.  Jno plowed inthe new part of the New Field with the 3 mares. Hardy sold the bullock for 10.2.6. Jno took Mary home in the phaeton this afternoon.

13th May         I wrote to Brownand also to Lambert about Jessie and I remitted Bowman a cheque for £6.0.0 topay for 10 cwt linseed cake 5.10.0 and 10/- for Arabian Horse Powders.  Jno Hardy and Matthew went a club feasting today.  Hardy with Hector carted some roadwashings on the piece at the bottom of the Calf Croft.  Much rain fell last night and this afternoon.

14th May         Glass loweringbeing now very low.  Very much rain fellyesterday from 2 to 10 o'ck last night. John and Matthew were off a club feasting.  Hardy finished cleaning away the roadwashings and putting them on the rough land at the bottom of the CalfCroft.  I drew Clem a cheque to pay £60Mr. Arkright's 1/2 year's rent due June the     .  3 carts fetched 3 loads oflime.  Some smart rain this even.

15th May         Glassstationary.  A dull but warm growingmorning.  I wrote to Mr.Ecclesfield.  Thrashing wheat to day withHector and Bess.  Eliza went to Darley toa tea drinking.  I got a quantity ofworms both before and after dinner.  Clemmade an end of thrashing his wheat this afternoon.  A fine, calm moonlight evening.

16th May         Glass ratherrising, and a very fine sunny growing morning. John Hardy took Jessie to Sheffield to day.  Hardy sold Clem's wheat to Else at 26/6.  Winnowed the wheat to day.  I spudded in the Water Ley, the Hoult and theBottoms both fore and afternoon.  Robertbroke stone for Tommy Goose to day and Tommy was walling the new wall.  A fine, balmy moonlight night.

17th May         Glass fast risingthis morning.  A most beautiful balmyday.  Clem turned out his milk cows andhis last years calves.  Tommy Goose andRobert were again at the wall this morning. I walked down the two Carringtons this afternoon.  Some smart showers during the day and alittle thunder.  Fine starry night.

18th May         Glass fastlowering being at much rain.  A veryshowery day from morn till even.  None ofus went to church to day on account of the weather.  John rode Kate for some time thismorning.  Wind changed this afternoonfrom the SW to the North and the glass began to rise.  Moonlight night.

19th May         Glass rose verymuch last night, but some smart showers this forenoon.  Mr. Alsop called this forenoon.  Eliza went by the 10.16 train to Derby.  I arranged for going to Bakewelltomorrow.  I spudded in the Water Ley theHoult and the Bottoms to day.  I got aquantity of worms in the Water Ley.

20th May         Glass rising anda fine warm calm day.  I left by the 9.36train for Rowsley, by bus to Bakewell. Was at the bank 1 ½ hours, executed sundry commons.  Posted a £5 Bank of Eng to H.R. Goebel &Co: Cornhill.  I returned by the bus andthe 12.30 train.  I walked to the NewField to look at the wall.  Mrs. Alsopand Mrs. Eyre took tea at Cowley.

21st May          Glass stationarythis morning.  I wrote to Alfred to Rotherwoodanswering a note I had from him yesterday. I walked to the new wall and spudded. Mr. and Mrs. Clem went to tea at Wensley.  John Matthew with all the horses and 2 cartscarted stone for the new wall.  After teaMatthew Isaac and I washed the moss on the worm pot.  Came on small rain this evening.

22nd May        Glass fastlowering.  Very much rain fell last nightand in Sheffield at 3 o'ck an hours very heavy rain.  I left by the 9.16 train for Sheffield and arrived at12.15.  I was an hour at the Bank.  Made sundry purchases.  Dined at 3.30 at Brookes and left by the 5.40train for Ambergate & Darley.  Clemmet me at the station.  I received anacknt of £5 from Goebel & Co.

23rd May         Glass ratherlowering.  A fine calm sunny warm growingmorning.  Clem and I arranged our fishingtackle for Scotland.  Got manure out of the cattle yard into theLittle Ley for cabbages.  Jno. went toFircliff for sundry furniture from Derby.  I received a note from Mr. Prest aboutJessie.  I spudded on the bank near the NewField.  Some smart showers during to day.

24th May         Glassstationary.  Some smart showers earlythis morning.  I wrote to Mr. Prest aboutJessie.  I also wrote to Ned respecting Wooster.  I walked this afternoon to the New Field andto look at the new wall.  I mixed someArabian Horse powder for the 3 horses. Thunder and some very heavy rain.

25th May         Glassrising.  Very warm day.  Fair till 4.30 then thunder and very heavyrain till 10 o'clock thisevening.  Mr. and Mrs. Clem and I went tothe Old Church thismorning.  I dined at Fircliffe and Wat& I went again to church this afternoon and I got wet and caught in theheavy rain.  Glass continues rising.

26th May         Glass continuesto rise, but the weather looking very unsteady. Mr. and Mrs. Clem left for Bakewell by the 9.36 train.  I took a dose of castor this morning.  I gave Robert instructions to clear away thefence for the new shed field wall.  John& Matthew with 2 carts and the 3 horses carted rubble stone.

27th May         Glass loweringthis morning.  A warm, sunny, verygrowing day.  I went by the 9.36 train toRowsley and by the bus to Bakewell.  Wasan hour at the Bank and returned by the 12.30 train to Darley.  I got cash at the Bank for our Scotchtrip.  Frank came this afternoon and Ipaid him £15.  Jno. carted stone again asyesterday.  Tommy Goose finished the newwall.

28th May         Glass fastlowering and a very rainey morning.  Clemand I arranged our packages for Scotland.  I wrote to Dick to order Clem 2 500 Thousandheads.  Also to Lawton about stone forthe new shed.  I gave 2/6 for thebranches of the oak tree in the Broad Meadow hedge.  I arranged the worms for Scotland thisevening.  Glass rising this evening.

29th May         Glass fast risingthis morning, but rain from 4 o'ck until 7 o'ck.  We arranged our baggage intending to leavefor Wakefield by the 12.36train from Darley and we did so and Clem and I slept at H. Holts & we metAlfred there.  We took a cab fromOkenshaw to Wakefield.  This was a general rejoycing day for peace.

30th May         Glassrising.  We breakfasted at H Holts andClem, Alfred and I took a bus to Okenshaw for the early train for Leeds.  We left Leeds at 10 .15 a.m.for Lancaster and from thenceto Carlisle were arrived at 6.30.  We took tea at the county Hotel and slept there.  We strolled about the town 1 1/2 hour.  Went into the Cathedral etc.  A fine evening, the glass rising.

31st May          A beautifulday.  Glass rising.  We breakfasted at 7 o'ck and left forBeattock by the 8 o'ck train & arrived at Mrs. Cranstoun's at about 11o'ck, where we dined and slept.  Wewalked this afternoon to the Beld Craig, and a precious long walk we foundit.  We took tea and slept at theAnnandale Arms.

1st June                        Ashowery day, which we spent at Moffat. Went to the church this morning and heard .... Vicar.  We walked this afternoon towards the well andover the fields back again.  We took teaand in the evening Alfred and I toddy and Clem soda water.  Wet night.

2nd June                       Arainy morning, but fair after 9 o'clock.  Clement Alfred and I breakfasted at Moffatand left in a drosky at 9 o'clock for theCrook.  Clem got out en route and fishedabout 6 miles down the Tweed.  We all three walked after tea to oppositePolmead.  Mr. Somerville and his son camethis evening.

3rd June                       Fishedthe Hairstane Burn today.  At the Crooke.

4th June                        Fishedthe Polmead water today.  At the Crook.

5th June                        Wewent in "Ecclesfield's" phaeton today to the Talla Lin and fished theTalla.  At the Crook.

6th June                        Wewent in "Eccelesfield's" phaeton today to the Stanhope Burn andfished there.  At the Crook.

7th June                        Atthe Crook.

8th June                        Weall three went to Tweedsmuir Kirk today and heard Rev Mr. Tod, and a mostunpleasant parson we thought him.  Walkedto Kingledoors after dinner.  At theCrook.

9th - 22nd June            At theCrook.

23rd June         Some small raintill 11 o'clock.  After that very fine.  Clem and I crossed the Tweed in thecart.  I fished in the Harestane Burn andClem in the Small Tributary.  I took 16fish and Clem 40.  Alfred walked to thetop of a high hill behind the Crook. Clem and I arranged our baggage for leaving in the morning, and I paidthe bill.

24th June          A very wetmorning.  Clem, Alfred and I breakfastedat 7 o'clock and left the Crook inEcclesfield's phaeton at 8 o'clock from Beattockand by the 11.15 express train for Carlisle.  We dined etc and slept at the countyhotel.  My stomach being out of order Idid not leave the Inn this afternoon.  Clem and Alfred went over Carr's BiscuitWorks and made sundry purchases.  A dullevening.

25th June          A mostbeautiful summer's day.  We breakfastedat 7 o'clock and left Carlisle by the 8.15train for Lancaster where Alfredleft us for Patricroft, and Clem and I proceeded to Leeds, Ambergate &Darley and we arrived safe (thank God) at Cowley at 8.30 and found every thingvery satisfactory.  Glass rising and avery fine warm evening.

26th June          Glass rising,and a very hot fair summer's day.  Iremitted Goebel & Co 16 Oxford St £3.0.0 Clem unpacked and arranged our baggage. Walked this evening to look at the barley, potatoes and wheat in the FarLey, and then I walked round the Water Ley and looked at the Hoult.  A very warm, close night.

27th June          Glass loweringthis morning.  Misty early, then veryhot.  Walter came here to breakfast.  2 carts carting rough stone from the Lane forthe New Shed.  Hardy brewed thismorning.  Received a note from Alfredfrom Patricroft and one from Dick from St. Mary's, also one from Josh Kirk formy infirmary Subsn.

28th June          Glass ratherrising, but some small rain till 9 o'clock.  After that fair and very close &sunny.  I wrote to Ned and JosephKirk.  Two carts carting stone from topof the lane for the new shed to day.  Ispudded in the Home Field this afternoon. Windy this evening and much cooler. Glass rising.

29th June          Glassrising.  Some wind and a fine summer'sday.  Mr. and Mrs. Clement and I went tothe Old Church thismorning.  I dined and took atFircliffe.  Walter and I went to Churchthis afternoon.  Mary Ella dined and tooktea at Cowley.   Glass lowering.

30th June          Glass fastlowering and a cool sombre morning.  R.Wildgoose began the new shed this morning. I wrote to Parkers.  A little rainabout noon, but it was afterwards fairand the glass rising.  I wrote to Lawton about theremains of the stone for the Stack Bottoms. Mrs. Alsop took tea here.

1^st July              Aslight frost this morning.  Glass rising,very fine calm, fine and sunny.  Johnwith the 3 horses harrowed the new part of the Adams Close.  R.W. began the Wall for the New Shed.  I gathered 2 baskets of the mangolds whichClem had hoed out in the Little Ley.  Isawed up a quantity of fine wood for Lydia.

2^nd July             Glassrather rising this morning.  Very finecalm and sunny.  The 2 Hardys with 2carts went to fetch Bricks for the Steaming apparatus.  Eliza got a note saying that Charles Halldied in America.  Mr. And Mrs. Belcher and Mrs. Alsop came hereto tea and spend the Evening.  Glassrising, a frosty night.

3^rd July             Glassrising.  A sharpish frost thismorning.  I went to Rowsley by the 9.36 a.m. train and by the Bus to Bakewell.  I was an hour at the Bank and went throughthe Balance Book and returned by the 12.20 train from Rowsley.  I walked this evening up the Barn field, thetop Carrington over the Adams Close and by the Knowle field Home.

4^th July             Glasslowering.  Wind in the South.  Jno. Hardy with one cart and Hector and Besscarted 1 load cut stone and some Road Scrapings.  Robert began taking down the Old Stack YardWall.  John and Matthew began mowing inthe Broad Meadow this Afternoon.  Alfredand Louisa came this Afternoon.  I wroteto Ned sending him Wooster’s Letters.  Glass lowering.

5^th July             Glasslowering, a beautiful sunny morning. Robert put down some stone over the Barn into the Hoult.  John and Matthew finished mowing the BroadMeadow.  Alfred, Louisa, Clem and Iwalked after tea to beyond Holmes’ Barns. Glass lowering but it was a fine hay making day.

6^th July             Glasslowering, a dull fair morning, but came on to Smart Rain at 2 o’ck and lasted 2hours, then a fine Evening.  Alfred and Iwent to the New Church this morning andClem and Louisa to the Old Church.  The Rain prevented going to Church thisafternoon.  Alfred, Louisa, Clem and Iwalked after tea to the Knowle Wood.

7^th July             Glassfast lowering and a Very Rainy morning. Clem went by Rail to an Union Meeting. Received a note from Ned containing 2 letters from Wooster.  I answered Ned’s note.  A thorough wet day till 7 p.m.  and then afair evening and Mr. And Mrs. Clem, Alfred and Louisa had a long walk.

8^th July             Glassrising but very low and a very Rainy morning which prevented by going by the10.16 train to Sheffield.  I managed by a/c with Clement.  The weather prevented me going to Sheffield to day.  The weather cleared about noon and the glass began to rise.  Clem Alfred and I  walked this evening to the New Field.  Clem sold 14 lambs at Bakewell for 18/- each.

9^th July             Glassrising and a fine morning but very cold. John and Matthew again began mowing and finished the Adams field.  I walked twice to day to the Adams Close.  Clem and Alfred walked to Potters to examinethe Hay making machine.  A smart showerfor 20 minutes otherwise a fine day. Glass continues rising.  FineEvening.

10^th July                       Glassrising and a most beautiful sunny morning. Began using the Hay Maker this morning. John with Bess was carting Stone to day. Alfred and Louisa left this forenoon for Fircliff.  Recd a foot rot receipt from Mr.Ecclesfield.  I walked this afternoon tolook at the turnings &c in the Little Ley. I walked to the New Close and down the Top Carrington.

11^th July                       Glasslowering and a little rain fell in the night. I wrote to Ned respecting Wooster.  Busy with the hay in the Broad Meadow and theAdams Close all the day.  I spudded inthe Water Ley this Afternoon.  Mr. Evanscalled this Afternoon and I paid him a little Balance of Miss Lomas’.  Glass stationary this Evening.

12^th July                       Glassrather lowering and rainy unfortunately. Robert &c laid the foundation for the hay stack.  John carted with Bess cut stone to day.  Jno. Potter brought some wood for the NewShed.  I paid him Ten Pounds on accountof the Hay Maker and other Work done and to be done.  W.Rd & Vin called this Evening.

13^th July                       Glassa little rising and a very fine, hot, sunny summer’s day.  Clem and I went to the Old Church thismorning.  I dined and tea’d atFircliffe.  Wat Richard and I went againto Church this Afternoon an my return from Fircliffe.  I called to look at G. Walls ? and boughtsome coping stone of him at 10 per yard. Glass rising.

14^th July                       Asharp frost last night.  Glass rising anda very fine calm sunny morning.  I walkedbefore Bfast to get ? Holmes to cart the coping stone from G. Walls.  A fine hay day till noon, afternoon very cold and no sun.  Carted 2 loads of hay out of the NewField.  Glass lowering.

15^th July                       Glasslowering and a dull morning, but afterward a fine hot summers day.  I left for Sheffield by the 10.16train.  I dined at Brooks.  Made sundry purchases at Radgers’.  I took a Cab part of the way to Broomfield where I slept& c.   I had a bowel attack.  Took a dose of chalk medicine which did memuch good.  Glass lowering.

16^th July                       Glasslowering a dull morning, and some small rain till oneo’clock.  After that cold very windy butsunny.  I attended a Bank Meeting till1.30 then dined at Brookes’.  BoughtAlfred ½ doz silver spoons at Radgers’. I left Sheffield for Ambergate & Darleyat 5.40.  Mr. And Mrs. Clem met me at theBridge.  Glass rising.

17^th July                       Glassrising and a fine cool windy sunny morning. I wrote to Clif. about Mrs. James & c. also to Alfred.  Finished Stacking the hay from the New Fieldand the Broad Meadow.  I cleaned out theTrough in the Upper Carrington thisAfternoon.  John and Matthew began mowingthe Horse Pool this Evening.

18^th July                       Glasslowering and a little small Rain this morning before 6o’clock.  I wrote to Amy and Ned sayingI would remit them from Bakewell tomorrow. John and Matthew continued mowing in the Horse Pool today.  A fine afternoon.  I arranged for going to Bakewelltomorrow.  Glass lowering.  Mrs. Alsop called.

19^th July                       Glassrather rising, but a little Small Rain this morning.  I left for Bakewell by the 9.36 Train.   Was a short time at the Bank.  Parker was in Buxton   ½ an hours heavy rain at Bakewell.  I returned by the 12 ock Bus to Rowsley andfrom thence by the 12.30 Train.  Finishedmowing the Horse Pool.  Glass ratherrising.

20^th July                       Glassa little rising.  A little small Rainthis forenoon.  Very fine hay afternoon.  I went to the New Church thisforenoon.  Clem to the Old and he tookdinner and tea at Fircliffe.  I walkedthis Afternoon to look at the Turnips and went over the Hoult.  Fine evening.

21^st July                        Glassstationary and a dull morning and some drizzling rain.  hindering hay weather.  Hardy began tedding the Horse Pool with theHay maker.  John & Matthew mowed theGrass at the bottom of the Low Carrington. Mrs. Belcher and 2 young ladies called. Mrs. Alsop came this Evening.

22^nd July                       Glassstationary.  A fair dull morning.  Began carting the hay out of the Hoult.  Received a note from Ned.  I wrote a long note to Josh. Walker.  Finished carting the hay out of theHoult.  A very hot afternoon.  I assisted Clem this afternoon in making hayin the Hoult.  Clem tedded the Grass onthe Steep Bank this forenoon.

23^rd July                       Glasslowering.  A fair, calm, very warmmorning.  Began cutting the Tares in theLittle Ley this morning.  Turned the hayin the Horse Pool.  I wrote to J. NaineN.B. Railway declining for Ned to take a share offered to him.  Some thunder this Afternoon.  Received acknowledgements from Amy andNed.  Starlight night.  Glass lowering.

24^th July                       Glassstill lowering, but calm very hot and fair this morning.  Rd. Wildgoose arranged the Small Boiler inthe Brewhouse.  Thunder and Lightningwith heavy rain which put a stop to the hay in the Horse Pool.  The old Sow pigged 17 young ones thisEvening.  2 dead ones.  Glass rising this evening.  Starlight.

25^th July                       Glassnow rising and a fair hot sunny morning. I wrote a long note to Alfred at Broomfield.  Carted the low portion of the Horse Pool haythis Afternoon.  Clem and I pulled 2baskets of mangold this evening out of the Little Ley field.  Mr. And Mrs. Alsop called this Evening.  A fine starlight Night.

26^th July                       Glassrising, but a rainy morning.  I wrote along note to Edwin about Mrs. James & family.  The rain prevented finishing the hay.  Carted some manure into the Adams field.  I received a note from Alfred from Woodburnsay that Sandelands declined selling his House at Cross Green.  Very fine Evening.  Glass rising.

27^th July                       Glassrising and a very fine Summer’s day. Clem went to the Old Church, and Walterreturned with him to dinner.  I did notgo to church this morning.   Clem, Walter and I went to the New Church thisAfternoon.  Rev. Mr. Richardson preachedan excellent sermon for the Benefit of the Sunday School.

28^th July                       Glassrising this day but lowered in the night and very much heavy rain fell duringthe night but a fine fair day.  I left bythe 10.36 train for Sheffield to have my corns operatedupon, and such was the case.  I dined atBrooks, got a few things at Radgers and returned by the 5.40 train.  Starlight night.

29^th July                       Glassrising and a beautiful, calm, sunny day. I received a note from the Ge. St. Bank for a call of £5  a share on the 1^st ofOctober.  Finished all the hay except theRakings and (thank God) in good condition. Received a note from Edwin about Mrs. James and the plantations.  Glass gradually rising.  Starry evening.

30^th July           Glassrising.  Early a high wind, then calm andvery hot.  Finished the Hay thisforenoon.  Beckey’s Birth Day.  Received a Note from P.H. Fletcher which Isent to T.D. Jeffcook.  I wrote to J.Hissey.  R.Wildgoose finished the wall inthe Calf Croft Corner.  Holmes carted 3loads cut stone to day.  Glassrising.  A fine starlight night.

31^st July                        Glassrising and a calm, sunny, hot morning. R. Wildgoose put down the stones for the Corn Stack Bottoms.  I wrote a long note to John Radgers on thesubject of Banking.  Beckey received aBirthday present by post from poor Miss Worsley.  John ? with soil the new portion of the AdamsField.  Thermometer 88 degrees.  Glass rising. Starlight night.

1^st August         Glassrising, a very calm hot morning, at 10 o’clock the thermometerstood at 91 ½ degrees.  Jno. Potter Junrcame to put the wood on the New Shed &c. Franco called this forenoon.  Mrs.Alsop and Anthony called this evening. Clem and I measured the part for draining in the Hoult.  Wind S. Glass lowering.  Starlight night.

2^nd August        Glassrather lowering.  W. wind.  Very calm and hot.  Thermometer at 10o’clock 85 degrees.  John with 2 horsescarted 2 loads of sand.  Received a notefrom Clif and one from T.P. Jeffcock saying that Lot No. 2 sold for £730.  Clem and I walked after tea round the Houltover the Water Ley and into the Bean field. Starry night.

3^rd August         Glass stationary.  Very misty early.  A very hot day.  Clem and I went to the New Church this morning andstayed the Sacrament.  Rebecca went toChurch and dined and tea’d at Wensley. Clem and I walked about the Land for an hour after tea.  Glass rather rising this even.  Fine, calm, starlight night.

4^th August         Glassrather rising.  Continuance of calm,sunny very hot weather.  Thermometer at 10 o’clock 91 degrees. Carted flags from Upper Hockney for the SteamerYard. Say 18 yards @ 5/- per yard. Matthew discontinued coming to Cowley. A Truck of Lime came from Ambergate this evening.  Glass rising.

5^th August         Glassrising.  Still very hot calmweather.  I left in the phaeton forBakewell at 8 ock this morning.  Jno.Drove me.  I went through the cash &Balances at the Bank and returned at 12.13 in the phaeton.   Ant Alsop dined here to day.  Hardy with the 2 mares carted the Lime on theNew field fallow.  Received a note fromthe Lottery office.  Glass rising.

6^th August         Glassrather lowering.  A very hot, calm, sunnymorning.  Watered the Lime this forenoonon the New field fallow.  Returned H.R.Goebel & Co. 16 Cornhill the 1/8 lottery ticket No. 25329 a prize of 30florins 5/8 to our credit for it.  MissBower and young Fletcher called to tea, and Mrs. Alsop called this evening.

7^th August         Glasslowered much last night, a beautiful calm sunny morning.  John fetched Mr. Evans at 4 o’clock this morning to Eliza, symptons of herconfinement.  Mr. Evans  b’fasted, he went home this forenoon, butreturned this evening and stayed all night. Very much thunder overly all the day and some rain.   Received a note from Alfred & Edwin.

8^th August         Glasslowered much last night.  Eliza gavebirth to a little Lass about 3.30 this morning. Very misty morning, calm and sultry. Thermometer 88 degrees at 8.20. Mrs. Alsop came this forenoon and remained till 8 o’ck thisevening.  Mr. Evans called again thisevening.  Clem and I walked this even tothe New field and over the Beans and to look at the Turnips.

9^th August         Glassrising this morning.  Misty and somegentle rain.  I wrote to Alfred to Cheltenham and to E. Parkerat Radgers’.  Sowed the seeds on the newpart of the Adams Close.  R. Wildgoosefinished the Steamer Yard.  A very wetday.  R. Wildgoose finished with us thisevening.  Received a note from Mr.Ecclesfield about Tibbie   Fair evening.

10^th August       Glassrising.  A tremendous flood this morningin the Derwent.  A very hot, calmday.  Clem and I went to the New Church thismorning.  Mrs. Alsop called to see Elizathis forenoon.  Clem and I walked aboutthe farm both this Afternoon and after tea. Glass rather rising.  Starlight at11 this Evening.

11^th August       Glassstationary this morning.  Very calm andvery hot.  Wat called on horse Back aforeBfast.  Jno. wIth the 3 horses beganparing the Barn field.  I wrote to Nedand Edwin.  I prepared for going to Sheffield tomorrow.  Clem and I after tea walked up the BarnClose.  Glass rising.

12^th August       Glassrather rising.  I left by the 10 trainfor Sheffield.  Found Watat the station en route to Scarborough, went togetherto Eckington.   Saw Frank atAmbergate.  Got to Sheffield at 12.15.  Dined at Brookes.  By bus at 4 o’ck to Broomfield where I took teaand slept.  Sat an hour this evening atMr. Eyres’.  Some heavy rain in Sheffield.  Glass rather rising.

13^th August       Glassrising, and a warm day.  A shower for 10minutes at 5 o’ck.  I attended a Bankmeeting till 2.30 then dined at Brooks. Got 2 pairs trousers & 2 vests at Rentons.  Left by the 5.40 train for Ambergate andRowsley.  I saw Frank at Ambergate.  Clem met me en route home near J. Rae’s.  Glass rather lowering.

14^th August       Glassrather lowering.  Cleared away the stoneout the stack yard.  Jno. With Hectorhorse hoed the turnips.  Some smartshowers with thunder.  Robert broke aquantity of stone in the Cattle Yard.  Iwrote to Mrs. Cranstoun about Ecclesfield. I walked this afternoon to the bottom of the Little Ley, and down theBottoms.  Fine moonlight night.

15^th August       Glassrising.  A fine, windy sunnymorning.  John finished horse hoeing theturnips this forenoon.  Hardy wasBrewing.  Recd a note from Alfred from Cheltenham.  Received for Ned a M.S & Lin  cheque for 6/3.  Mrs. Alsop dined and tea’d here.  John harrowed with the 3 horses thisafternoon.  Clem arranged for Swindlehaving 5 sheep at 6 ¾ per pound.  Fineevening.

16^th August       Glassrising and a beautiful calm sunny morning. John with 3 horses finished harrowing the Barn field to day.  I wrote to Amy and Ned.  I spudded this afternoon on the Bank in theAdams Close.  Clem and I walked after teadown the Bottoms and over the Hoult. Glass lowering.  Very windy andcold.

17^th August       Glasslowering, much small cold rain fell during last night and likewise till 6 o’clock this evening. Clem and I went to the New Church thismorning.  Beckey also and went to Wensleyand stayed all night there.  Eliza camedown to tea.  It was so cold we had afire in the Dining Room.  Glass stilllowering.

18^th August       Glasslowering, a fair morning, burt a very cold east wind.  Clem went to an Union meeting.  I sent a note by him to Parker.  I remitted to Mrs. Hartop a cheque for her ½years interest.  John with the 3 horsespared the Little Ley.  Ant. Alsop calledthis evening.  Clem received a note fromAl. Holyrood Terrace, Malvern.

19^th August       Glassrising, but a very drizzly morning. Hardy and John with the 2 carts Hector and Bess went for ? drainingtiles.  Mr. Tomlinson began yesterday thedrain in the Adams Close.  I wrote toFawcett of Beaumont to remit me before the 8^th of September.  Clem and I walked after tea over the Hoult tolook at the Drain in the New field and down the Upper Carrington.  Glass rising.

21^st August       Glasslowered very much last night, much rain fell during the night and continuedthis morning.  I wrote to Heward for hisAccompt.  Eliza received a note fromAmy.  Robert white washed the calf stableand sheds.  Clem and I walked thisAfternoon to look at the new drain in the Adams field and wewent down the Upper Carrington.   Much heavy rain this afternoon.

22^nd August      Glassrising, a dull but fair morning.  Hardyand John with 2 carts went to fetch the remainder of the draining tiles.  I spudded up thistles in the Upper Carrington thisforenoon.  Received a note from E. Smithand Son saying they had sold

23^rd August       Glassfast rising and a fine sunny but cool morning. A sharpish frost.  Hardy and Johnbegan to mow the oats in the near Ley and mowed about 2 acres.  Tomlinson finished the Drains to day in theNew field.  I walked this evening to theNew Field.  One of the storks got into aditch this evening.  Got Raines horse todrag her into the shed.  Gloomy evening.

24^th August       Glasslowering and some trifling showers.  Iwent to the New Church this morning andClem went to the Old, and dined at Fircliffe. Becky went to the New Church and dined atWensley.  Clem and I walked to look atthe Bardley, and to the end of the Little Ley to look at the wheat.  Glass lowering.

25^th August       Glasslowering this morning.  I went by the10.3 train to Matlock Bath to appeal as to being charged with a shepherd’s bagand succeeded.  Edwin came by the earlyTrain and dined here.  He paid Clem and Ia cheque each on a/c of the Plantations. A few showers during the day.

26^th August       Glassrising.  Mowed the Barley yesterday andbegan to mow the Oats in the Low Carrington this morning.  I spudded in the Water Ley this Afternoon.  Clem and I after tea walked an hour about thefarm.  I prepared for going to Bakewelltomorrow.  Received Hewards’ newspaperaccount.  Weather very unsteady but glassrising.

27^th August       Glasslowering and some rain fell last night. I went by the 9.35 train to Rowsley and by bus to Bakewell.  Was an hour at the Bank, when there I postedHeward a P.O. order for £5.11.6.  Ireturned by the 12 o’ck bus to Rowsley and by 12.30 train to Darley.  Received Church St. Transfer from E. Smith& Son, and which I returned to day. Began carting the wheat today.

28^th August       Somesmart rain this morning from ½  past 5 till 7.  Jno. WithHector carted the spare drain soil out of the New field.  Continued drizzling till 4 o’ck then a finesunny evening.  I walked to see how thedrain was finished in the New field and by the Carringtons back again.

29^th August       Glassrising but a warm muggy, drizzling morning. I wrote to Ned.  The weathercleared at 12 o’ck and the remains of the day was very fine.  The old fish woman (Moseley) was killed onthe railway.  I spudded 2 hours in the Upper Carrington thisafternoon.  Finished mowing the oats inthe Low Carrington, and then mowed the pottatoe oats in the near Ley.

30^th August       Glassfast rising.  A sharp frost this morning& very misty.  A fine calm sunnyday.  They cut the tartarian oats in theNear Ley.  I spudded this forenoon in thetop Carrington and this Afternoon in the Orchard.  Received a cheque for £4.7.6 for Frank fromthe North Eastern Railway.  Some smallrain this evening.

31^st August       Glasslowering, but a glorious fair day.  Clemand I went to the Old Church thismorning.  I dined and tea’d at Fircliffe,and Walter and I went again to Church this afternoon.  Wat walked with me to the end of the Meadows.  Rebecca dined and tea’d at Wensley.  Fine starlight evening.

1^st September   Thermometerhad been at 33 degrees last night – Glass lowering this morning, very mistyearly, then very clam and sunny.  Ispudded this forenoon in the Upper Carrington.  Much thunder, lightning and very heavy rainfrom 7 o’ck till ten this Evening.  Clemsold 2 red pigs this Evening.

2^nd September  Glassrising and a calm sunny morning.  Theyoung white sow pigged 12 young ones this morning.  I posted a note to Ned in answer to one fromhim yesterday.  I spudded this forenoonin the Top Carrington and in the Water Ley this Afternoon.  Began cutting the wheat in the Far Ley Today.  I wrote to Mrs. Cranstoun aboutEcclesfield.  Beautiful day and glassrising.

3^rd September   Glassfast rising, very misty till 7 o’clock then calm andsunny.  I finished spudding in TopCarrington.  Harrison called today.  Mrs. Betcher and Mrs. –called.  I walked to look at 3 trees inthe New Field that Mrs. Harrison said Clem might fell.  I bought the spare wood of an oak tree on theBank under the Wood of Harrison.  Finestarlight night.

4^th September   Glasslowering.  Wind S.  A very fine sunny day.  Eliza Beckey and I went in the phaeton toBakewell this morning.  I went throughthe Balances at the Bank.  We returnedfrom Bakewell at 12.30.  Carted the poland oats out of thelittle Ley this Afternoon.  Clem and Iwalked after tea up the Broad field and over the Newfield.  Glass lowering, starry nt.

5^th September   Glassslowly lowering, but a beautiful calm sunny morning.  Hardy sold Else the poland oats at 1/3 perstone.  Began yesterday mowing the wheatin the Long Close.  I wrote toEcclesfield.  Finished the wheat mowingin the Long field this Even.  Rebecca andI walked to the Far Ley.  Wind East andthe Glass lowering.

6^th September   Glass lowering,and a dull, threatning morning.  Begancarting another portion of the oats in the Near Ley.  Ant. Alsop called this forenoon.  Finished carting all the oats to day.  Received a note from Turner saying Brown isfrom Home and he thinks as such there will be no monthly meeting on nextWednesday.  Some slight rain thisevening.

7^th September   Glasslowering and some drizzling Rain till 11 o’ck, after that fair and a fineafternoon & Evening.  Mr. And Mrs.Clement went to the old Church this morning and I went to the New Church thismorning.  Clem and I walked over aportion of the farm this Afternoon and Evening. Glass rising.  Wind N.W.

8^th September   Glassrising and a fine calm morning & sunny. Began to thrash the oats this morning. The Rakings.  Carted all theBarley this Afternoon.  Received theTransfers &c from E. Smith & Son of S.R. 15 Bk Shares for my Signatureand I returned them.  I wrote to Clif andFawcett & Beaumont Wakefield.

9^th September   Glass alittle rising.  Foggy morning but fair& calm.  Began thrashing the poland oats.  I wrote to G. Thorburn.  Received a note from Ned.  I walked this forenoon Round by Raynes up thetop Carrington and by the Wood to Cowley and this Afternoon over the Hoult theWater Ley up to the Wood and down the 2 Carringtons home again.  Mr. and Mrs. Alsop called this Even.

10^th September Glassrising but some small rain this forenoon. Billy was painting and puttying yesterday and to day.  Winnowed the poland oats thisforenoon.  Jno. With the 3 horses harrowedin the Barn field.  The 2 horses andcarts delivered the 11 quarters poland oats thisAfternoon at Else’s Mill.  Glasscontinues rising.

11^th September Glassrising, a dull but fair day.  I left forRowsley and Bakewell by the 9.35 train, was an hour at the Bank and got cashfor Clem for buying sheep at Derby.  Received a note from Edwin & also fromAlfred.  Carted the Wheat out of the CalfCroft this Afternoon.  I paid to Clem £50as a portion of my Board &c for next year 1857.  Glass rising.

12^th September Glasscontinues rising, and a fine sunny morning. Mr. and Mrs. Clem left for Derby by the 8.25train.  Began carting the wheat out ofthe far Ley.  I wrote to Edwin andremitted W. Jeffcock £2.0.0 on a/c of Darnall National School.  Finished carting the Wheat out of the FarLey.  Clem bought in Derby 40 sheep.  Hardy lost one of them in Derby.

13^th September Glasslowering and a little rain fell this morning. Jno. With the 3 horses plowed inthe Barn Close.  Robert began the Ditchin the long field.  I wrote to Clif.  Frank began thatching the corn stacks.  Clem received a note from Alfred fromMalvern.  Clem attended a meeting as toDarley School Governors.  Glass rising.

14^th September Glassrising and a fine sunny day.  Mr. andMrs. Clem and Rebecca went to South Darley Church thismorning.  I went to the Old Church this morning andstayed Sacrament.  I dined atFircliffe.  Wat and I went again toChurch this Afternoon.  I stayed tea atFircliffe.  Beautiful full moonlightEvening.  Glass rising.

15^th September Glassrather lowering, and a little rain fell this morning.  I wrote to Dick.  I prepared for going to Sheffield tomorrow for aBank meeting on Wednesday.  Received aLottery Note and an acknowledgment from Wm. Jeffcock of my Darnall Schoolsubscription.  Glass rather rising.

16^th September Glassrising and a fine fair harvest day.  Ileft for Sheffield by the 10.16 train from Darley, took somestrawberry plants for Clifton, dined atBrooks, made sundry calls, and walked to Broomfield to tea and sleptthere.  In the Evening looked at aportion of Cliffs Museum and I redde anumber of Letters from Scientifics.

17^th September Glassrather lowering this morning, but a fine, fair, sunny harvest day.  Rd. called on one at the Bank and I arrangedto go back with him in his phaeton to Rotherwood.  Was at the Bank till one o’clock, made several calls and purchases and went todinner at Rotherwood and slept there.  Afine cool moonlight night and the Glass rising.

18^th September Glassrising and a fine harvest day.  I wentwith Dick in his phaeton to Park Cottage. I again dined and slept at Rotherwood. We walked this Afternoon to the New Winning.  I arranged for dining tomorrow at ParkCottage.  Fine moonlight evening.

19^th September Glassrising and a fine cool harvest day. Error on my report yesterday.  Idined there Park Cottageyesterday and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin dined at Rotherwood to day.  Dick drove me round by Brinsworth thisforenoon.  We called to look at abeautiful sow at Mr. Jackson’s at Brinsworth. Fine moonlight night.

20^th September Glasscontinues rising.  I breakfasted atRotherwood.  Dick drove me to WoodhouseMill and I left by the 10.16 train for Ambergate and Darley and got to Cowleyto Dinner.  Ed. Wass and Ed Darwin lunchedhere, they were shooting and killed 5 brace of partridges.  Glass lowering this evening.

21^st September Glasslowering this morning.  I went to the New Church this morning andMr. and Mrs. Clem to the Old Church, and Clem aloneto the New Church this Afternoon.  Somevery smart Rain this Afternoon., but a fine starlight Evening.  The Glass lowered about 6 inches to day.

22^nd September            Glassvery low and still lowering.  I wrote toParker to say I would be at the Bank Octo. 4^th.  I asked him to order 10 cwt oil cake ofBowman at 10.5.0.  Began cutting theBeans this forenoon.  Came on smart Rainat 3 o’k and continued till about 6 o’k. p.m. Began cutting the Beans this morning.

23^rd September Glassdown at much Rain and still lowering.  Avery wet morning which prevented outdoor work. I sawed some wood for the Dining Room fire.  Jno. Tomlinson was working at the Hoult drainto day.  I stripped some oak branches inthe Stack yard this afternoon.  Mr. andMrs. Clem went to tea yesterday at the Rookery. Glass a little rising this evening.

24^th September Verymuch rain fell last night, but Glass rising this morning and fair.  I wrote to Jos. B. Bowman for a ton of cakeat £10.15.0 delivered.  I also wrote toFrank.  Mr. and Mrs. Clem went to dinnerat Wensley and met Mr. and Mrs. Harwood there. I went to see Hardy &c burn the Hedge cuttings in the near Ley, andI went over the Hoult to look at the New Drain. Glass rising.

25^th September Glass alittle rising, and a fine, calm, sunny morning. Thrashed the Barley to day, which was sold to Else at 43/-.  I sawed a quantity of Wood for the DiningRoom fires.  Walter called thisAfternoon.  Edward Wass took here.  Finished the Barley thrashing.  I wrote to J. Hissey to arrange to pay thethousand Pounds.  Fine evening.

26^th September Glassrising and a fine cool morning.  I wroteto John Burkinshaw to get a few Baits for next Tuesday.  Finished the Barley for Else.  John plowed in the Barn field with the 3horses.  Glass lowered this Evening, andcame on Rain.  Ant. Alsop dined andbrought 2 rabbits.  I spudded in theWater Ley.  Much Rain at Bed time.

27^th September Glassfast lowering and much Rain this forenoon. Finished winnowing the Barley. Remitted Als’ cheque £100 to Barber. I wrote Al. to No. 13 Montpellier Tender Ilfracombe.  Arranged Frank’s cash Accompt to January 1^st 1857.  Frank came and dined here.  Glass at much Rain and contd to lower.  Ed. Wass came at 9.30 and slept here.

28^th September Glass atmuch Rain and lowering.  Mr. and Mrs.Clem and I went to the New Church thismorning.  The Derwnet much on theRoad.  Sent E. Wass in the cart to Darley Church.  He played the New Organ there.  A collection to pay expenses in respect ofthe New Organ.  Ed. Wass returned here bythe cart, and stayed all night.  Glassstationary.

29^th September Glass alittle rising this morning, but at set fair. E. Wass breakfasted here and left by the 8.35 train.  Clem. Left for a Union Meeting at 9.35.  A. Alsop called this forenoon.  Clem returned with Vawdrey.  Remitted Ned a Railway dividend cheque Ireceived to day.  Carted Else the Barleyhe bought.

30^th September Glassrising and a beautiful sunny morning. Tomlinson worked at the Hoult drain to day.  Received Barbers acknowledgment of Alfred’sRemittance.  I arranged coupons fortaking to the Bank on next Friday.  I cutup the old tea Chest which the biscuits came in.  John carted a quantity of soil for a part ofthe drain in the Hoult.  Glass continuesto rise.

1^st October       Glasscontinues to rise, and a fine calm morning. Jno. With the 3 horses plowed in the Barn Close.  I wrote to Harrison for leave to take someash saplings for laths for the New Shed. I also wrote to Dick.  I sawed aquantity of wood this afternoon for the Dining Room fires.  I walked to the Drain in the holt to look atthe Cabbages in the Far Ley &c.

2^nd October      Glasslowering and a drizzling morning.  Begansewing the wheat in the Barn field.  Gota cow calf yesterday from Elliot.  Iwrote to W. Holmes about his pidgeons. Much rain remains of day.  I sawedsome wood for Dining Room fires. Tomlinson began an short Drain in the Knowle.  Glass stationary, a starlight Evening.

3^rd October      Glassstationary, but a rainey morning, which prevented John plowing.  Hardy and the Lads sorted and washed the BadPottatoes.  I went by the 11.41 trainfrom Darley and went to Bakewell and went through the Sep. Balances at theBank.  I returned by 3 o’ck Bus toRowsley and by the 3.20 train home.

4^th October      Glasslowering and very showery.  Jno. With aCart and the 3 horses fetched some road scrapings for the shed floors.  Received a note from Alfred and Clem, onefrom Geo. Holmes.  The men and women hadthe Harvest Supper this Even.  Clem and Iwalked to look at the Land which Geo. Holmes offers to Mr. Arkwright.

5^th October      Glassrising and a very fine hot sunny day. Mr. and Mrs. Clem went to the New Church and stay’d the Sacreament.  I went to the Old Church, dined at Fircliffeand Wat and I went again this Afternoon. I had a ¼ of an hours talk with Mr. Vawdrey and gave him my mite towardsthe new organ and for H. Stowell’s collection Tuesday.

6^th October      Glassrising, and a fair but dull morning.  Ileft by the 12.36 train for Woodhouse Mill. Dick me there in his Phaeton.  Islept at Rotherwood.  Walked to thecolliery this Afternoon & c.  A dullEvening and very cold.  Glassstationary.  Wind N.E.

7^th October      A verywet morning and rainey day, and the Water began to come into Orgrave Meadowsthis Afternoon.  Dick, Wilfred and Iwalked to Mr. Armorys and arranged with him for 2 young pigs at 21/- each forme to take with me on Thursday Morning to Cowley.  I again slept at Rotherwood.  A dark, cold, drizzling night.

8^th October      Glassa little rising and a fair but dull day. Mr. and Mrs. Rd. and I left at 9.10 in the Phaeton for Sheffield.  I went by Bus from Attercliffe.  Attended the Bank Meeting till 2.45.  Made sundry small purchases.  Returned at 3.15 in the phaeton toRotherwood, where I again slept.  Glassrising, but dull Evening.

9^th October      Glassa little rising, and a dull but fair day. I left Rotherwood at 9.30  Mr.Amory took me to the W.M. Station and the 2 pigs in his Dog Cart.  I sent the Pigs in Wrights Cart with 5 cwteach.  I strolled about the Buildingsthis Afternoon.  Glass rising.  But came on to rain at 9 o’ck p.m.

10^th October    Glassstationary, but much rain fell this forenoon. Hardy and Jno. took the Roan “Wensley” to Winster fair, but did not sellher.  I wrote to Alfred about SandilandsHouse.  Received the £2.18.6 from Mrs.Gratton.  Clem fixed the Brass Chains toGertrudes Cradle.  Glass rather risingthis Evening.

11^th October    Glasslowering, and a comfortless drizzling morning. I wrote to Thos. Cheatle Ashby de la Zouch for Clem, respecting some Galway heifers.  Received a note from Frank fromWeston-super-Mer.  I cut up a quantity ofwood for Dining Room fires.  Frank mowedthe ruff grass in the home field.  Glasscontinues to lower.

12^th October    Glasslowering.  Much rain fell early lastnight and till 7 o’clock thismorning.  Mr. and Mrs. Clem Rebecca and Iwent to the New Church this morning,and Clem and I went there again this Afternoon. The Barometer began to rise this Afternoon.  Hot this Afternoon and very calm moonlightEvening.    

13^th October    Glass risingthis morning and a calm, dull, fair day. Clem and Hardy walked to Bakewell fairs. I wrote to G. Hounsfield.  Clembought 2 sows in Bakewell for £9.10.0. Clem and I went to examine the Beans. John plowed in the Low Carrington with the 3 horses.  Fine moonlight Evening.

14^th October    Glasslowering and Wind in the South.  I wroteto Lawton for someStone.  Jno. again plowed in the LowCarrington.  Mr. and Mrs. Wathers dinedand took tea here.  Mrs. Alsop took here.  John harrowed a portion of Lints which weresewed in the Low Carrington.  Mr. Watherswith Clem walked over nearly all the farm.

15^th October    Glassgot down very much last night and some heavy rain fell.  John began plowing the near Ley.  Clem received a note from Hallows asking hissupport as a candidate for collector. Clem and I walked over the near Ley.  Hoult & c this forenoon.  I walked to Gaving Hay to see if Mr. Wilmotcould get some larch poles for Clem for fencing.  Glass rising this Evening.

16^th October    Glassrose very much during last night, but a dully calm muggy morning.   Robert began to clear the Steep Bank in theHoult this morning.  The 2 oak trees nearthe top Gate were taken down to day.  Iwrote to Ned.  I walked twice to look atRobert clearing the Hoult Bank.  A finemoonlight Night.  Glass rising.

17^th October    Glassrising.  John with the 3 horses plowed inthe Near Ley to day.  Frank and Adams dugup pottatoes in the little Ley.  I walked3 times to the Hoult to look at Robert clearing the Bank.  Received a Note from G. Hounsfield.  Finished getting the Pottatoes in the LittleLey.  Fine, clam, windy drying day.  Moonlight night.

18^th October    Glassrising, and a very calm, sunny morning. Holmes carted some cut Stone for a portion of the Road near thePiggeries.  I walked twice to see howRobert was getting on in the Hoult with clearing the Steep Bank.  Clem. Had about ½ doz. Hands in the Beanfield this Afternoon.

19^th October    Glassrising and a fine Autumnal sunny day. Mr. and Mrs. Clem and I went to the Old Church thismorning.  I dined at Fircliffe.  Walter and I went again to the Old Churchthis Afternoon.  Walter walked with me tothe end of Bentley’s Meadows.  Glassrather lowering.

20^th October    Glassrather lowering this morning.  Robertfinished the Bank clearing to day.  Iwent by the 9.35 train to Rowsley and by Bus to Bakewell.  I was at the Bank an hour.  Returned by the 12 o’ck Bus to Rowsley and byTrain to Darley.  A very misty Evening.

21^st October     Glassrising.  A very dense Fog this morning, buta fair Day.  I wrote a long note Alfredat Ilfracombe and I received a note from him. Clem and I measure this Afternoon all the fences of the Long Closemaking it about 5a.0R.12P.  I took byNote to Alfred to Jno. Hardy’s.  Glassrising, misty night.

22^nd October      Glass rising and a very dense mist till 10o’ck, then warm, sunny and a beautiful day. Clem and I walked to Fircliffe to Breakfast.  We and Walter left in his Phaeton at 8.30 tofish at the Swiss Cottage Lakes.  Wat. Caught one fine Pike, Clem caughtnothing.  Geo. Met us in the Park at 4o’ck and we returned in the Phaeton.

23^rd October    Glassrising, but a very dull morning. Afterwards a very fine, warm, fair day. Mr. and Mrs. Clem Rebecca Gertrude and Emma went to Fircliffe to dinner.   Mr.Vawdry and Louis called this Afternoon. Got a portion of the Beans stacked to day.  John Hardy was unwell and did no work to day.  I fetched 2 baskets of fire wood out of theHoult.  Recd a Note from Dr.Shearman.  Glass rising.

24^th October    Glass rising.  Got Reyne’s mare to cart Beans.  We had 3 carts doing so to day.  I wrote to Ned.  Mr. Prince’s farmer called to look at Clem’sPigs.  I walked to the Bean field and tothe little Ley to the end of the Turnips. A fine, fair, calm day for the late Harvest.  Glass at set fair and rising.

25^th October    Glasscontinues to rise, a calm, fair, dull morning. Clem got Mr. Alsop’s mare to finish carting his Beans.  Chopping an hour this morning.  I wrote Goebel & Co sending back the nos.of the Lottery Prices.  Robert finishedpitching the Road from the Piggeries into the Cattle Yard.  Glass rather lowering.  A fine, starry night.

26^th October    Glassrather lowering, but a fine, calm day. Mr. and Mrs. Clem went to the Old Church thismorning.  I went to the New church bothfore and afternoon and Clem also went this Afternoon.  A very fine starry Evening.  The Glass continues a little lowering.

27^th October    Glasscontinues a little lowering.  Mr. VawdreyBreakfasted here.  Clem left by the 9.36train to attend a Guardian meeting.  Ireceived a Note from saying he should get to Cowley tomorrow.  I wrote to W. Holmes about his pidgeons.  The Slaters began covering the Steamer today.

28^th October    Glassagain a little lower, but a calm, fair, dull morning.  I wroe to Goebel and Co. to say Clem hadforget to get a P.O. order yesterday for £5. Began thrashing wheat to day which sold Else for 26/- per load.  Alfred arrived here from Ilfracombe to tea,and to spend some days here to see about Sandilands house.  I walked to Sandilands house and called inBelchers.

29^th October    Glassstill lowers, and a cold fair day.  ElizaAlfred and I walked to S. Darley Cottage and went over the House and Grounds&c.  Eliza & Alfred called at theBelchers.  Mrs. Belcher called thisforenoon.  Alfred and Clem walked over aportion of the farm this Afternoon. Starlight cold night.

30^th October    Glasscontinues to lower, and a very cold raw calm morning.  Clem and Alfred walked this forenoon toFircliffe and also to call on Sandilands. I wrote to Ned.  Mr. and Mrs.Belcher and Ant. Alsop took tea here. Alfred and I walked this Afternoon beyond Holmes Barns and to the BroadMeadow.

31^st October     Glasscontinues to lower and some rain fell last night.  Alfred left for Sheffield by the 10.5train.  Clem went by the same train to Matlock Bridge to pay Bratby’sAccompt.  Began plowing the Knowle.  A. Holmes carted a quantity of sand to dayfrom Potters’ Meadow.  I sawed up aquantity of fine wood.  Glassrising.  Starlight night.

1^st November   Glassfast rising.  I wrote to Dr. ShearmanRotherham.  Jno. continued plowing theKnowle.  Robert did a piece of drainingin the Long field.  Alfred returned herefrom Broomfield by the 5 o’clock train.  Iwalked over the Knowle this Afternoon.  Benjaminmowed some of the Ruff Grass in the Water Ley. Glass lowering.

2^nd November  Glass alittle lowering this morning, but a fair, dull day.  I went to the Old Church this morning andstayed the sacrament.  I dined atFircliffe.  Mr. and Mrs. Clem went to S.Darley Church this morning and the two Gents again this Afternoon.  The Glass continues slowly lowering.  A dark misty Night.

3^rd November   Glass alittle lowering and a very calm, misty morning. Clem and Alfred walked to S. Darley Cottage and Eliza to Wensley.  I received a Note from Johnie.  John plowed in the Knowle.  Mr. Alsop’s mare was here to day removing thehurdles from under the wood to fence off the cabages in the Far Ley.

4^th November   Glass alittle rising.  A trifling rain earlythis morning.  Jno. continued plowing theKnowle.  Hardy put down in the hurdles inthe Far Ley.  Rob. Worked at limestonehill in the Far Ley.  I went by the 11.41train to Rowsley and by Bus to Bakewell. Went through the Balances at the Bank and returned by the 3 o’ck Bus and3.30 train to Darley.  Glass rising.

5^th November   Glassrising.  A very calm, dull, mistymorning.  The Bakewell Sweep swept 3chimneys this morning.  I wrote to Clifton respecting Dr.Shearman & C.  Having fenced off theLimestone Bank turned the Calves into the Far Ley Clover.  Clem and I went this Afternoon to theLimestone Hill &C.  Bamford was allthe day at Steamer.  Glass rising.

6^th November   Glassrising and at set fair.  A strong whitefrost this morning.  Very calm and sunny. Got Mr. Alsop’s mare to cart the mangoldinto the Long field & c.  Jno. againplowed in the Knowle.  Eliza &Rebecca went by Rail to Matlock Bridge thisforenoon.  Mr. and Mrs. Clement went toWensley to tea.  I walked to theLimestone Hillock this afternoon.  Amoonlight frosty night.

7^th November   Glassstill rising, and a very sharp white frost. Eliza went by the 8.21 train for Derby.  John continued to plow in the Knowle.  I was suffering with a severe cold.  Miss Norman and Governess called this forenoon.  Received notice from Geo. 10^th November Glasslowered much last night.  A very cold butfair morning.  Jno. and Hardy sowed aportion of the Knowle with Wheat. Received a note from Amy and Alfred. I wrote to G. Hounsfield & Clifton. Clem went by the 9.31 train for Bakewell.  I wrote to Edwin this evening about Herbert.

11^th November Glassstill lowering.  A cold wintery day.  A black frost this morning.  I wrote to Js. Hissey.  John plowed in the Knowle to day.  Frank was thatching the New Shed.  Mr. and Mrs. Clem walked to Sibrey’s to lookat his Wood Plough.  I received a notefrom Alfred from Ilfracombe & C.  Onefrom Edwin on plantation Business.  Glassrising.  Fine windy moonlight night.

12^th November Glassrising, windy and bitter cold.  Somesmall rain fell this forenoon.  Receiveda note from Johnie.  Jno. continuedplowing the Knowle.  Getting up themangold and white turnips.  Eliza RebeccaGertrude and Emma went in a cab this Afternoon to Lea Hall to spend a fewdays.  Mr. Belcher called this forenoon.  Getting up mangold and turnips to day.  Glass rising.

13^th November Glassrising and a fine cold calm sunny morning. Got Poppit to cart mangold and turnips into the Stack Yard.  Jno. continued to plow in the Knowle.  I sawed some wood for the Dining fires.  I walked over the Little Ley and over the FarLey to the old Lime Kiln.  A little smallRain this afternoon.  Glass rising.

14^th November Glassrising this morning and most beautiful calm and sunny.  Clem and I breakfasted at 7 o’ck.  He left by the 8.21 train for Cromford and tospend the day at Lea Hall.  I cut up aquantity of Wood for the Dining Room fires. I walked about the premises about 2 hours this afternoon.  Carted Turnips again wi’ Poppit.  John plowed and harrowed in a little Wheat.

15^th November Glassrising and a fine calm winter’s morning. I drew a Blank Cheque for Clem for Bakewell fair on Monday.  I walked to the Far Ley.  I laid out some wood for sawing for theDining Room Fires.  Frank finishedthatching the new Sheds.  Clem begansteaming chop to day.  Glass rising.

16^th November Glasscontinues rising.  A sharp white frostthis morning.  Clem went to the New Church thismorning.  I did not go to Church my coldnot being well enough.  Clem and I walkedout an hour this Afternoon.  A very coldwinterly day.  Glass still rising.

17^th November Glasslowering.  A very sharp white frost thismorning.  Thermometer had been at 14degrees last night.  Clem and Hardy leftat 7 o’ck for Bakewell fair.  They bought2 cows and one stirk.  Clem sold theAlderney Cow this Afternoon.  I sawedsome wood for Dining Room fires.  Glasslowering a Thaw.

18^th November Glasslowering, and a trifling Rain this morning. Sowed a portion of the Knowle to day. I wrote to Wakes about S. Darley Cottage.  Clem and I walked to the Old Lime Kiln at Noon and to look at a plan for draining the Long fieldand filling up the Old Ditch.  I sentCanon Sale my proxy for Dr. Eldge ? as M.B. to the ?

19^th November Glasslowering and a shower early this morning. After 8 o’ck fine and sunny.  Clemwent in search of some larch Rails for fencing. Finished ploughing and sowing the Knowle this forenoon.  Received a note from Alfred respecting SouthDarley Cottage.  Clem and I went thisAfternoon to Old Lime Kiln.  Glasslowering.

20^th November Glasslowering and a very dull but mild morning. Received a note from Alfred & Dick. Clem and I went to S. Darley Cottage to look over and report to Alfred.  Jn. Fetched a wood Plough from Mr. Sibrey’son trial.  Hardy carted the wood from theHoult and the cordwood from the Broad Meadow. Glass lowering.

21^st November Glassrising, and a beautiful mild sunny day. I went by the 9.31 train to Rowsley and by Bus to Bakewell.  Was at the Bank an hour, returned by the 12o’ck Bus to Rowsley and by train to Darley. Received a note from Alfred.  Isawed a quantity of oak cord wood this Afternoon.  Glass rising.

22^nd November            Glassrather rising.  A fine, mild, windy sunnymorning.  I wrote to Alfre.  Jno. plowed with the 2 mares in the NearLey.  Chopped and steamed.  Clem and I walked to the Lime Kiln thisAfternoon.  I wrote a long note to Alfredto Ilfracombe.  Hector carted turnips today out of the Little Ley.  Very windyday.

23^rd November Glassmuch lowered and a windy drizzling day. I went to the New Church this morning andMr. and Mrs. Clement went to the Old Church thismorning.  Much Rain fell thisEvening.  Glass continued to lower.

24^th November Glasslowered a good deal last night and much fain fell and very windy.  The Derwent was Bank full and partially outthis morning.  Clem, Hardy and 2Tomlinsons took 43 sheep and 8 calves to eat the Heddish at S. Darley Cottage.   Mr. and Mrs. Eyre & Mr. and Mrs. Alsopdined here.

25^th November Glasslowering and some drizzling rain this morning. A mistake the top line.  Glassrising, a sharp frost, but a fine sunny cold windy morning.  Clem and I walked this Afternoon to look atthe Sheep and Calves at S. Darley.  I wrote to Ned to enquire after hishealth.  I sawed some oak Cord Wood forDining Room fires.  Very dark night.

26^th November Glassfell very much last night, and a considerable fall of soft snow in the groundthis morning.  I wrote to J. Hisseyrespecting the £1,000 he owes but did not post the Note to day.  Began carting the dung out of the Cattle Yardinto the Calf Croft.  Received a notefrom Alfred.  I sawed up a quantity offine wood.  A thaw all the day &glass lowering.

27^th November Glasslowering and the snow gently thawing.  Iposted my yesterday’s note to J. Hissey. Continued to cart the dung on the Calf Croft out of the CattleYard.  Received a note from Alfred.  Robert began putting down the flags from theKitchen Door to the Garden Gate.  Cartedmanure into the Calf Croft to day.  Glassrising and a frosty evening.

28^th November Glassrising and a sharp frost this morning.  Acalm fine sunny winter’s day.  Finshedthe manure carting on the Calf Croft. Wrote to Lawton for Bill of theStone we have recently had.  I sawed aquantity of wood (oak) for the Dining Room fires.  Robert finished the flaggin to the GardenGate.  Again a sharp frost and starlight.

29^th November Glass alittle rising, and a very sharp frosty morning. Thermometer at 7.30 at 12 degrees. Clem steamed chop to day which was chopped this morning.  Robert put down the large flag to keep up thesmall coal.  I sawed a quantity of wood(oak) for the Dining Room fires.  Iwalked by Raines fields and round by the Knowle.

30^th November Glassrising and a severe frost this morning.  Thermometerat 10 degrees.  Clem and I went to the Old Church both morning andAfternoon.  We dined at Fircliffe andwalked back over the meadows.  Mrs. Clemwent to the New Church thismorning.  A continuance of Sharp Frost.

1^st December    Glassrising and a continuance of very severe frost. The Thermometer had been down last night at 9 degrees.  Clem left by the 9.35 train to attend a BoardMeeting at Bakewell.  I walked to theLime Kiln Hillock & again sawed some wood. Glass rising & severe frost.

2^nd December   Glassrising.  The Thermometer had been down at7 degrees last night.  Sever cold frostyday.  Clem and I walked to Sybrey’s toorder a plough.  We called to measure aWall at S. Darley Cottage.  I sawed upsome wood.  Finished getting the manure outof the Cattle Yard.  Received a Note fromJ. Hissey.  Snow fell for 2 hours thisEvening.

3^rd December   Glasslowering.  Thermometer 20 degrees.  About 2 inches of snow on the Ground.  Thrashed a small Bean Stack to day.  I wrote a long Note to Amy about the£1,000.  Received a begging Note forGeorge Eaton.  Glass began to rise aboutmid day.  I sawed a little wood andarranged the Work Shop.  Very sharpfrost.  Starlight.

4^th December   Glassrising.  A very severe frost thismorning.  The Thermometer had been as lowas 3 ½ degrees.  Carted the felled Woodfrom the Limestone Bank and 10 loads of stone. I went by the 11.41 train to Rowsley and by Bus to Bakewell.  I went through the Balances at the Bank, andreturned by the 3 o’ck Bus to Rowsley and by the 3.30 Train to Darley.  Glass lowering.

5^th December   Glasslowered very much last night and much of the snow thawed.  Much milder this morning.  I wrote to Ned about Amy who had called onhim.  Received a note from Ned after Ihad written to him.  I wrote to Clifton about BankMeeting.  Winnowed 16 loads of Beanstoday.  Nearly all the snow gone, verymuggy.  Glass lowered exceedingly to day.

6^th Decmeber   Glassrather rising and a fine windy bright morning. Chopped chaff for steaming and Clem steamed it this forenoon.  I wrote to Ned telling him I had rather notpay his January 1^st £30 till our February Dividends were made andconcerning Wooster’s Balance promised afore Xmas.  A very warm muggy unhealthy day.

7^th December   Glass atmuch Rain.  Thermometer at 50degrees.  Very drizzly and muggy.  Mr. and Mrs. Clement and I went to South Darley Church thismorning.  Some smart rain preventedClement and I going this Afternoon. Glass rather rising.

8^th December   Glassrather rising but very low.  Some smallrain this morning.  Robert laid down someflags from the Garden Gate up to Hardy’s Cottage Gate.  I received a note from Ned and one fromAmy.  I prepared for going to Broomfield tomorrow toattend the next Wednesday’s Bank meeting.

9^th December   Glass ratherrising but very low.  I left by the 10.16train for Sheffield.  Dined at Brooke’s.  Bought some china for Cowley atJohnson’s.  Ordered several matters atWilke’s.  Ordered at Renton’s a wideovercoat for £2.0.0.  Went by a bus at 3 o’clock from Newmarket to Broomfield.  Took tea and slept at Broomfield.  Some smart rain this Evening.

10^th December Glass alittle rising, but some smart rain from 10 till 2 o’ck, then fair and a finemoonlight night and glass rising.  Attendthe Bank Meeting.  Dined atBrooks’s.  Called on Wake’s aboutHissey.  Got some pomada at Woodcook’sand some drink powders for cows at Machay. By 4 o’ck bus from N’market to Broomfield.

11^th December Glassrising and a fine sunny winter’s day.  Ileft Broomfield by cab at 9 o’clock to the Wicker Station and by the 9.40 train toAmbergate and Darley.  I brought with methe china from Johnson.  Found when I gothome a note for Frank from Eastern counties Railway.   Some rain this evening early afterwardsmoonlight and fair.

12^th December Glassrising this morning, and a fine calm sunny winter’s day.  Jno. with Bess fetched a load of drainingtiles.  I sawed up a quantity of Firewoodfor the Dining Room Fires.  Clem sold theAyrshire Bullock to Swindle for 7 shillings a stone.  Some smart rain this evening.

13^th December Glassvery much lowered last night and being this morning at stormy.  Chopped this morning with Hector and Kate andClem steamed.  I wrote a long note to Nedpaid for the Ambergate Lime.  I sawed aquantity of Wood for the Dining Room fires this Afternoon.  Glass fast lowering.

14^th December Glassrising and a fair mild winter’s Day.  Iwent to the New Church this morning andMr. and Mrs. Clement went to the Old Church thismorning.  Clem and I went to the NewChurch this Afternoon.  Glass very fastrising.  A fine moonlight Evening.

15^th December Glassvery fast Rising and a fine Winter’s Day. John with the 3 horses began plowing in the Long Field.  Received a Note from Alfred.  I wrote to Frank sending him a

Hissey’s Brother called thisforenoon.  Killed 2 pigs thismorning.  John contd plowing in the LongField.  Pigs weighed 40 stones minus afew pounds and were cut up and salted this evening.  Clem and I walked this Afternoon to arrangewith Robert the digging of S. Darley Garden.

17^th December Glasslowering, a change in the weather.  Coolbut fine and sunny.  Boiled some IndianMeal for the Pigs.  Jno. continuedplowing the Broad field say Long Field. I wrote to Parker and Lawton.  Received a note from Amy, Alfred & G.Hounsd.  Mr. and Mrs. Clement and I wentto the Rectory to Tea, met Mr. Belcher, Mrs. Walter and Agnes there.  Starlight Night.

18^th December Glassfast lowering, and a cold, damp, drizzling morning.  Received Frank’s acceptance of the new

With the 3 horses plowed in the Long Field.  Eliza received a long leter from Amy with herDirection for the Xmas hamper.  Clem andI walked to the Hoult to see the Rubbish burnt. Walter bought a Bakewell cow this Afternoon of Clem.

23^rd December Glassrising, and a beautiful cool calm sunny morning.  Sent Amy a hamper of pork pies & C.  I went by the 11.41 train to Rowsley and byBus to Bakewell.  Went through the BankLedger and returned by Bus @ 3 o’ck to Rowsley and by Train to Darley.  I posted Frank’s Journal at Bakewell.  A change in the Weather this Afternoon.  Glass fast lowering.

24^th December Glasslowered very much last night, and some snow fell this Evening.  I wrote a long note to Amy about Ned’sIllness & c.  I sawed up a large lotof wood for the Dining Room Fires.  Verycold and Raw.  Gave the Servants theirCristmas Boxes.  Glass continues to lowervery fast,  standing this Evening atStormy.

25^th December Glassstill lowering being nearly at the Bottom of the Glass. About 2 inches snow onthe ground this morning.  Eliza and Iwent to the New Church this morning andstayed the Sacrament.  I bought for Clema young sow in pig of Anthony Holmes for £4.15.0.  Clem did not leave the house having a badcold.

26^th December Glassvery  very low, and snow falling.  Received a note from Frank.  I wrote to J.M. Bishop Clough Bank Sheffieldrespecting late Mr. Bishop’s Grave.  Mrs.Alsop and Anthony came here to Tea.  Ourthree servants went to the South Darley Manse to tea & supper.  Glass rising this Evening & sharp frost.

27^th December Glassrising and a very sharp frost this morning. Received a note from Alfred.  Iwrote to Sandilands offering him £9.9.0 for his 2 hay Stacks.  Cut chop and steamed to day.  Clem received a note from Alfred from Bathrespecting his quantity of land &c at S. Darley Cot.  Very severe frost and snowy.

28^th December Glasscontinues rising.  Thermometer duringlast night at 4 degrees.  Some snow fellduring the day.  Mrs. Clem and I went tothe New Church this morning.  Clem didnot go not being well enough.  Glasscontinued rising very fast.  A finestarlight evening.

29^th December Glasscontinues fast rising.  Thermometerduring last night was down at 13 degrees. Came on Rain at 10 o’ck this morning. I had my Breakfast in Bed, having a severe cold in my head.  I received a note from Amy and Eliza one alsoacknowledging the receipt of her Christmas Hamper.  I wrote to D. Guthrie No. 377 High StreetEdinburgh to continue the Agriculturalist sending to Clement.  I had my Breakfast in Bed this morning havinga severe cold in my head.  Carted thisAfternoon a quantity of the soil from the old LimeKiln into the littleLey.  A thaw all the day and some smallrain.  Glass rising, much milder.  Starlight evening.

30^th December Glassstill rising.  Much milder, very fine andsunny.  Tomlinson and 3 more men begandraining in the Long field.  I again tookmy Breakfast in Bed.  Carted the mixeddung out of the Tank into the Low Carrington. Mr. and Mrs. Clem went to dine at Wensley.  I arranged in pencil a Letter to our friendEcclesfield.  Received a note from ParsonSandilands respecting his Hay.  A verymuch milder day, a regular thaw with some trifling rain during the Day.  The Snow having gone very fast.  The Derwent was Bank full.  Glass rising. A very dark Night.

31^st December  Glassstationary this morning, but began to lower at noon, but a fine Winter’sDay.  Swindell took the Ayrshire Bullockthis afternoon to kill him at 7/- per stone. Jonathan Potter came to day.  Helowered the Racks in the Stack Yard Sheds, and began hanging the New Gate intothe Orchard.  I wrote a long note to Mr.Ecclesfield to post on New Year’s Day. Better this Day.  Finished teamingthe wood he bought of George Holmes.  Thenew moon was visible this Evening.  Glassfast lowering.
