Notes for Elsbeth Spittler:
The following is a quote from
information sent to me by James D Spainhour editor of the Spainhour
Family newsletter.
" Elsbeth (Spittler) Spanhauer, at age 48, left Switzerland for America
on 1740.0505. With her, were her four living children: Heinrich (24),
Werner (21), Anna (20) & Barbara (17). Traveling with them were three
closely related families.
One family was that of her brother-in-law Nicholas or "Claus" Spaenhauer
(50), a painter, and his wife Ursula (Schaub) (53) with their two
children Jacob (17) & Matheus (14) and a servant Verena Tschudi. The
second family was that of Elsbeths sister-in-law, Catherine (Spaenhauer)
Pfau (60) and her husband Hans Jacob Pfau (54), a shoemaker, with two of
their children. The third family was that of Elsbeth's sister-in-law,
Elsbeth (Spaenhauer) Brodtbeck (59) and her husband Heinrich Brodtbeck
(59), with their five children Heinrich (22) Nicklaus (20) Elsbeth (17)
Barbel (14) and Wernhard (10)
This group, and others took boats up the Rhine to Rotterdam in May, 1740
where they boarded the ship "Friendship" commanded by Captain William
Vettery. The passage was rough with a "terrible storm at sea". Nearly
sixty people from the Basel area died on that journey, mostly of hunger,
because they lost their provisions and cooking utensils in the storm.
The ship arrived in Philadelphia in August of 1740. On September 23,
1740 as required by law, the passengers appeared before the Pennsylvania
Court to take the "Oath of Allegiance" to the King of England. The court
recorded Elsbeth's family name as "Spainehower". see "Lists of Swiss
Emigrants in the 18th Century to the American Colonies" compiled by Dr.
Albert Faust & Cains M. Brumbaugh, edited in 1968 by the Genealogical
Publishing Co."

Garvis Gilbert (sometimes Gervais/Jarvis/Garvies/Garvis) may have been a son of Michael Gilbert and Dorothy Hargrave. If so, he was born 15 Apr 1680 at Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Marcum, The Way it Was with our Ancestors: “While there has been no primary proof that Garvais who came to Maryland was their son, so much circumstantial evidence shows this to be true, that after careful analysis and intensive research by many different parties this is the only reasonable conclusion that can be drawn.”
Henry C Peden Jr (707 Bedford Rd, Bel Air MD 21014), Gilbert Records in Harford County MD, Bel Air Copy Center, Bel Air MD, ©1986: The name of Garvis Gilbert (sometimes spelled Jarvis or Gervais) appears first in Baltimore (now Harford) County MD in 1699 in the Middle River Hundred.
