Hello and thank you for your interest in the SPEARS family tree in Australia.
William SPEARS came to Australia in 1801 as a soldier. A sawyer by trade, and registered as a protestant, he arrived in the colony aboard the sailing vessel "Earl Cornwallis" on 12th June 1801. He was intitially allocated as a private in the NSW Corps. The "Earl Cornwallis" was a ship of 784 tons built in London in 1783. It sailed from England on 18th November 1800, the journey taking 206 days to Sydney.

Whilst I have gathered much information about his descendants in Australia, I have (so far) very little on his ancestors. I know that William was born in UK in July 1773.

William married Mary HOWE. Mary was 18 when she arrived on the 'Minerva' in 1800. She was probably related to Francis Howe, another soldier who was posted to Norfolk Island. Mary is recorded as being born in 1781, possibly in England. However it may be that she was born in Ireland, given that the she was on the Minerva from Cork.

Mary left for Australia in 1799 as a free settler. She arrived on the "Minerva" on 11 Jan 1800. The Minerva was a convict transport ship, coming from Cork in Ireland. The journey went Cork, Rio, Bengal, Sydney. It is registered as carrying 26 female convicts

Any information that you might know about William or Mary's ancestors would be greatly appreciated. Of course, there is a lot I can already tell you about their descendants and I am working on a "quick find" tree suitable for the internet.
