The family roots can be documented as far back as 1867 when Andrew Jackson Spears married Mary F. Drumheller in Albemarle County, Virginia. According to the 1880 census they raised three sons: Samuel Austin born the 5th of October 1868, William W. born the 13th of June 1873 and Thomas H. born the 22nd of March 1877.

Our story begins with William W. Spears known to us as "Will" born in Albemarle County where he met and fell in love with Lilly Ann Drumheller born the 13th of July 1876. They were married the 8th of December 1893 and had two sons: Walter Lee born the 26th of September 1894 and Andrew Jackson born the 14th of February 1898. But, sadly Will was stricken with Bright's Disease and died at the young age of 23 on the 10th day of December 1899.

Lilly was living in Albemarle and raising the two small boys when she married George Washington Thacker in June of 1906 and had three more sons: Robert Randolph born the 2nd of November 1907, Lewis Washington born the 27th of August 1910 and William Herbert born the 24th of May 1913.
