The Craco Society Family Tree Project

This site is maintained by The Craco Society to provide information for members about the genealogy and family history of the village of Craco Italy. Craco is a small southern Italian hilltown in the Provence of Matera. Founded over fifteen hundred years ago it was continuously inhabited until the late 1960's when a servies of landlislides coused the relocation to a new town below the old one. Now abandonded it has becoem the site for tourists and movie makers.

From 1892-1924 over 1500 inhabitants of the village passed through Ellis Island New York as they sought opportunity in the new world. In the late 1960 there was another immigrant wave to North America as many left to avoid the disruption caused by the relocation to the new town.

The Craco Society was founded in 2007 to preserve the history, traditions, culture and language of the town. As part of that mission this site serves to provide information about the family history of the town.
