Thomas Seay, who had grown up from childhood in Greensboro and was then governor, accepted his resignation in an autograph letter, in which he wrote, "It is with the greatest concern that I learn that your health is so impaired that you are not willing to continue that service that has been characterized by a degree of fidelity that I have never known surpassed in any public office, and in which for so long a time you have enjoyed the affection and confidence of the peole of Hale County. During almost all the time of your long service I have beena witness of your integrity and devotion. My association with you remains unmarred by any disagreement, and it is with sincere regret that I accept your resignation." Volney was first a vestryman in the Episcopal Church in Greensboro but in 1839 he joined the Presbyterian Church and in 1849 he was ordained an elder; in which capacity he served his people and his God until he died May 29, 1890, revered and loved as a sterling citizen and a gentle Christian. . |
