Researching family of Jesse Spear, born about 1802 and died 1865 in Jasper Co., Ga. Census records during his lifetime claim Jesse was born in Georgia but two of his sons in later years state he was born in S.C., possibly Edgefield Co., S.C. where his wife, Isabella Coursey's parents (Charles Coursey and Isabella Anderson) lived in 1810. Jesse and Isabella were married in Jasper Co, Ga. in 1825. Jesse had four sons, Lewis W. Spear who was last seen in the 1880 Douglas Co., Ga. census; John A.J. Spear who was a Confederate soldier wounded and captured at Vicksburg and died in 1914 Jasper Co., Ga.; Elbridge Gerry Spear who was a member of Joe Brown's Army in Atlanta and died 1914 in Albertville, Al.; and the youngest son Francis Marion Spear who married Sally Lavonia Marsh and lived in Spalding Co., Ga. before dying in 1918. Jesse Spear had property near the train depot in Atlanta and in the 1860 Dekalb County, Ga. census, his son Lewis W. Spear is shown tending the farm. Jesse's daughters included Elizabeth, Martha, Mary Ann, Lucinda who married a Cheek, Barbara Nancy, and Isabelle who married George Washington Plymale in 1872 and lived in Marion Co., Ga.
Jesse was possibly related to the Jesse Spears who drew property in 96th District of S.C. in 1787. This early Jesse Spears was probably the Indian Trader who was involved in several Revolutionary War skirmishes in Wilkes County, Ga.
Elbridge Spear listed above had a son Jesse W. Spear who is found in the 1900 Franklin County, Alabama census living in the Newberg area. This is the same area where decendants of Robert Speer of Edgefield Dist. S.C. (died circa 1799) had lived in 1860. Robert's decendants were Robert Speer, Martin Speer, John Speer, Moses Speer and Jesse Speer of Limestone Co., Alabama. It's quite possible that my line of Spears is related to the 1790 era Robert Speer and wife Elizabeth Speer of Edgefield County, S.C.
The Jesse Spear of Jasper County, Ga. was somehow related to the Lewis L. Spear (1789-1856) who lived in Morgan County, Ga. until about 1817 when he moved to southwestern Jasper County, Ga. and was associated with John Portwood, Nathan Williams, Francis N. Taylor, Aquilla Phelps, Samuel Walker, Madrick Merritt and wife Barbara Cavender, Valentine White, George Clower (whose property Lewis L. Spear would live on), and Silas Pickard. Jesse and Lewis live near each other in the 1830 Jasper County census. Lewis L. Spear was a Methodist Episcopal Circuit Rider who moved to Muscogee Co., Ga. about 1832 and then across the Ga. State line into Russell Co., Alabama in 1850. He had sons Lewis B. Spear, Spencer Spear and Benjamin Judge Spear.
