Descendants of Alexander Berryhill

Generation No. 1

1. Alexander¹ Berryhill¹ was born Abt. 1760 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina (?)², and died February 03, 1839 in Marion County, Alabama³. He married (2) Rebecca Webster⁴ Abt. 1812 in Tennessee (?)⁵.

Notes for Alexander Berryhill:
He was living in Mecklenburg County, NC at the time he enlisted in military service for the Revolutionary War. It is thus only assumed that he was born there.
The cemetery is near Winfield, Alabama. It is not conclusive that he is buried at this location; however, a Revolutionary War marker for him has been placed there.
From Mecklenburg County, NC, where he lived, Alexander enlisted in the Revolutionary War Army under Capt. James M. Martin in the 3rd Regiment, commanded by Col. William Polk. He fought at the battles of Eutaw Springs, Biggans Creek, and Dorchester in South Carolina. He was discharged on
April 17, 1781.
After his discharge he lived in Georgia, about 17 miles south of Augusta, until about 1811, when he moved to Franklin County, TN. He was still living there as of September 2, 1832. About 1836 he moved to Marion County, AL to be near relatives. He lived there until his death.
He was a farmer, and in 1821 he owned 42 acres in Franklin County, TN. He also owned 3 horses, 4 cows and calves, 2 steers, 40 hogs, 4 sheep, 1 cart, 4 hoes, 1 axe, 3 plows and gear, 3 dishes, 3 basins, 6 pots and ovens, and 1 frying pan. The total value of his property was $166.75. He stated in his pension application, made that year, that he was "blind in one eye and infirm".
In Entry Book 1, page 6, Franklin County, the following is recorded "Alexander Berryhill enters one hundred & sixty acres of land in Franklin County in consideration of paying twenty dollars into the entry takers office of Franklin County, and the head of the eddy branch & adjoining a two hundred acre tract to James Lewis & William S. Gray on the south & west Beginning at a black oak in said Berryhills field Lewis & Grays southwest corner, and runs east with their line one hundred poles to John Mathews line & with the same south to John Densons corner & with his line west crossing the road leading from Winchester to Farriss warehouse in all one hundred & eighty poles thence north for complement including the plantation which Berryhill now lives. 26 May, 1824."
The minutes of the Franklin County Court for the August Term, 1832 (Minute Book 1832-37, page 71) report that "Alexander Berryhill an applicant for a pension under the act of Congress passed on the seventh day of June 1832 came into Court and filed his declaration and made oath to the same in conformity to said act and James Martin & Charles Weeks were also sworn and examined as witnesses and the Court being satisfied of the truth of said applicant's declaration the same is ordered to be
certified to the war department."
The minutes of the Franklin County Court for the January Term, 1837, state that it was "Ordered by the Court that John Frame , [etc.] , be appointed a jury of view to lay off and turn the road which leads to the boat yard commencing at Chapman McDaniel's Fence and to intersect the same at Berryhill's Old House and that they report to the next term of this Court."
