Descendants of Alexander Berryhill

Generation No. 2

2. Linsfield "Lin"² Berryhill (Alexander¹)¹⁸ was born Abt. 1800 in Georgia (near Augusta)¹⁹, and died Aft. 1880²⁰. He married (1) Elizabeth Miller^21,²² Bef. 1827²³. He married (2) Mary A. Wilks²⁴ January 17, 1854 in Franklin County, Tennessee²⁵.

Notes for Linsfield "Lin" Berryhill:
Linsfield's father stated in his application for a Revolutionary War pension that Linsfield was born near Augusta, GA. He was born in Georgia, probably south of Augusta, and moved to Franklin County, Tennessee with his father in about 1811.
By 1840, he and his wife, Elizabeth Miller, had six children and were living in Franklin County. In the Franklin County Minutes Book for October, 1840, he is shown as being appointed to be part of a group of citizens selected to maintain a road "leading to the top of mountain".
He was shown as a farmer with ten children at home in the 1850 Franklin County census.
By 1860 his first wife had died, and he had been married to Mary Wilks for six years. She is shown as being eighteen years younger than him. The Post Office listed on the census is Cowan, Tennessee. His vocation is listed as a farm hand. He doesn't own real estate, and has a personal estate valued at $115.00.
By 1870 they had moved to Bedford County, Tennessee, and in 1880 they were living in that county with the family of his son, Charles.
He doesn't appear on the 1900 Tennessee census.
Some of his descendants have said that he went by the nickname "Linn".
One story that has circulated is that he lived to be 113 years old, and died while working in the fields. However, census records don't appear to support the veracity of that story. (Source: Gedcom received from Doug Berryhill on 13 Nov 1996.)

Notes for Elizabeth Miller:
The 1850 census for Franklin County, TN shows an Elizabeth ? living in the household of Linberry Hill (Linsfield Berryhill). She is 70 years old, born in Virginia. She owns real estate in Franklin County valued at $300. Since she and Linsfield's wife are both from Virginia, it may be assumed that she is the mother-in-law of Linsfield.
