James Spencer Jr. (b. 1730, d. 09 Dec 1825)
Notes for James Spencer Jr.:
Settled in Turkeyfoot Township about 1764 on that point of land, now Confluence Borough, between the Casselman River and the Laurel Hill Creek.Quoting from the Confluence Centennial Souvenir Book, "by 1772 he had 21 acres of cleared land, which was above average.He did not have his land surveyed or patented until 1786.It contained about 250 acres, and is called "Good Fane" in the Patent.In 1798, he sold the land to Captain William Tissue."He moved to Addison Township in 1798 and then onto Perry County, Ohio in 1806.He is buried in the Hopewell Baptist Cemetery, four miles East of Somerset, Perry Co., Ohio.The church is no longer there.The inscription on his gravestone says, James Spencer Jr., a soldier of the Revolution, died December 9, 1825, aged about 95 years.
James Spencer's WillIn the name of God, I James Spencer of Perry County and State of Ohio being affected in body but sound in mind and memory and understanding considering the uncertainty of the transitory life do make and publish my last will and testament the manner and form following: principally and first of all I commend my soul to God who gave it and my body to the earth to be buried in a decent and christian like manner at the discretion of my executors hereinafter named and as to my property real and personal I give and dispense of in the following manner-First, I give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah Wiswell the one half of the farm I now live on likewise the one half of all my personal property. To Jonas Enfield son of my daughter Sarah Wiswell I give and bequeath the other half of the above mentioned farm likewise the other half of my personal property. The above willed on the following conditions that Sarah Wiswell and Jonas Enfield shall give me a good and decent support of victualling and clothing as long as I shall live-And lastly I do timely contribute and afford my trusty friends Thomas King of Clayton Township and Samuel Ream of Madison Township both of the county and state aforesaid to be the executors of this my last will and testament which I do timely declare to be my last will and testament revoking all other wills by me made.In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this seventh day of October Auno Domino Eighteen hundred and twenty five.James (his mark) SpencerSigned, sealed, published and declared by James Spencer the above named testator as for his last will and testament in the presence of each other hand have rules ordered our names as witnesses thereto.Attest David W.
