CHAPTER 12
ELIJAH HUNT SPEER FAMILY
Elijah Hunt Speer3 (William1, William2) was a frontiersman, farmer, Civil War veteran, Mason, and family man. Except for his service in the war, Elijah spent his entire life in Abbeville County. He raised a large family during the very difficult times following the war. See CHAPTER 1 for a list of his descendants.
Birth
Elijah Hunt3 was born March 14, 1828 to William Speer, Jr.2 (William1) and Mary Sue Gill (CHAPTER 5). Elijah and his twin sister, Mary Ealeanor Speer3, may have been born on their grandfather's Cherokee Ford Plantation on the Savannah River. Elijah was apparently named for Elijah Hunt, who was a prominent pioneer doctor in the area. Dr. Hunt served as one of three appraisers of the estate of William Speer, Sr.1 on April 28, 1830 (CHAPTER 2).
Marriage
Nothing is known about Elijah's early childhood, however his family moved to the Monterey Community (Magnolia Township) and he was living there with his parents by Census day, September 24, 1850A. A month before his twenty-fifth birthday, Elijah married Sarah C. Robertson on February 13, 1853. Sarah was the daughter of James (1797-1851) and Elizabeth Robertson, a locale family. Sarah was born January 17, 1835.

Note the variant spellings of 'Speer' in 1860 and that Elijah was living by himself in 1900.
On January 11, 1854, Elijah Hunt3 filed documents as the Administrator of his father-in-law's estateB. On September 21, 1857, he signed documents as witness to the sale of an eighty-eight acre tract of land that was adjacent to his own landC.
Civil War
Elijah Hunt3 enlisted in Company D, 7th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry, Kershaw's Brigade at the start of the war in 1861D,E (CHAPTER 19). He re-enlisted on July 18, 1862 in Columbia, South Carolina. Elijah's unit served in the Army of Northern Virginia and saw heavy action in most of the battles in Virginia. He accidentally shot himself in the foot on December 12, 1862, one day before the Battle of FredericksburgD. He was back with his unit at least in time for the famous Battle of Gettysburg. However, on July 2, 1863, the second day of this three-day battle, Elijah was wounded and capturedD. He spent the next two years as a POW in a Federal prison in Delaware. Elijah's unit surrendered after the Battle of Bentonville, North Carolina and he was paroled at Greensboro on May 2, 1865D. He was released from prison on June 10, 1865D. See Figure 12-1 for a tracing of his signature on his Oath of Allegiance upon release from prison. See Figure 12-2 for a portrait of Elijah Hunt3 in his Civil War uniform.

After the War
Elijah Hunt3 returned to Abbeville County after the war and settled down to raise a family. His first child, Lawrence4, had been born in 1856 and a second son, James4, was born during the war in 1862. Four additional children were born after the war (see below). On February 15, 1882, Sarah signed a letter to W. W. Humphreys, Anderson County Probate JudgeF. The letter concerned her duties as administrator of her mother's estate. See Figure 12-3 for a tracing of her signature from this letter.

On May 11, 1882, Elijah Hunt3 and his son Lawrence4 registered to vote in Abbeville. Lawrence was one month short of his twenty-second birthday.
The family apparently lived in several different places. They lived in Lowndesville for a while; they also lived northwest of town about one-half mile west of the Smyrna Methodist Church CemeteryG. In addition, an 1894 map shows that they then lived immediately south of the Old Rocky River Cemetery at Church Hill just west of his father's estate at MontereyH.
Death
Sarah died July 14, 1885 and was buried beside her daughter Lilla May Speer4 who had died in 1874. They were buried in the William Speer, Sr.1 family plot in the Old Rocky River Cemetery. Elijah Hunt3 died February 12, 1908 and was buried beside Sarah, Lilla, and his parents. An interesting story was published about Elijah and his tombstoneI:
"Many years before his death, {Elijah} bought not only his coffin but his tombstone and kept them both under his bed. I recall hearing what a shock the drayman received when engaged to move him from town to the country when the first thing he was told to take out to his dray was a coffin and a tombstone. The story goes, that when he did die, there had been such a freshet that the streams were all up and out of their banks so that it was impossible for any one to come to town if it had been necessary to get a coffin, so his forethought proved fortunate."
See Figure 12-4 for Elijah's and Sarah's tombstones.
