The Spiteri Staines family goes back several generations and as is common with many families in Malta has British ancestray, going back to Napoleonic times, as well as other Mediteranean connections.

One branch of the family has been traced back to the 1400s, before the coming of the Knights to Malta.

Other research has stopped at 1800 (Stephen Staines), and 1781 (Robert Smyth). My research shows that Stephen Staines married Lucy Baldock in Brighton (St Nicholas Church)on 20 October 1800. However, although according to the chrucrch register, the couple were of that parish, this would not have been the case as Lucy Baldock, at the marriage of her daughter, stated that she was of the Parish of St Georges, Middlesex. Furthermore, Stephen Staines does not feature in the Baptisms register of that parish for some years before. Any information will be welcome.

Robert Smyth was commissoned in Captain James Fenwick's Independent Company of Foot in 1781 (copy of the commission is held by me) and I have managed to trace his army career. He ended up as a Lieutenant Colonel with the 18th Regiment of Foot (the Royal Irish) retiring about 1824. I do not know his exact date of death. I would be interested to know from what part of Britain he came from. So far I have been unsuccesful.

Some Maltese lines have stopped more recently, but with further research I am confident that more information can be found.

Most of the members of the family still live in Malta. However, there are now several Spteri Staines in Australia and relatives in the UK.
