Pauline, daughter of Sophie Steiner and David Lederer, came to Baltimore from Bohemia as a teenager in the 1880s. There she met and, in 1892, married Hyman Goldberg, a native of Warsaw who had also come to Baltimore as a teenager. Hyman changed his name to Goldberg "to sound more Jewish."
