Notes for W
ILLIAM CARPENTER, SR.:
At age fourteen, William left the old family farm at Saratoga, NY. He worked on the farm of Jacob Denton for fourteen years. He met and married Lurania, who was also employed on the farm of Mr. Denton. After their marriage in 1833 they moved to Niagara and purchased a farm of 50 acres. After two years, he headed for Michigan in the company of Levi Preston. They walked through Canada to Detroit, then by the old Saginaw road to Atlas Township, Genesee County (later to become Goodrich). William purchased 200 acres from the government, 14 miles southeast of Flint and built a log house. The spot is where Gale Rd. meets Hegel Rd. Land in NY sold for $40 to $50 per acre. Michigan land sold for $1.25 an acre. He cleared off two acres and planted oats and potatoes. He then returned to NY to get his wife and child. They traveled with the family of Mr. Levi Preston. The journey was made with ox-teams, two yoke of oxen to a wagon. William walked again! The journey took a month. Most nights upon asking a farmer if they could camp in a field, they were invited in for supper. Everyone was anxious for stories of the frontier -- MICHIGAN! The rain often made the roads a quagmire, especially in flat lands of Ohio. Several times a day they would have to unhook the double oxen team and hook all four to one wagon, haul it half a mile and then go back and bring up the other.

While they were clearing the homestead, Lurania had little Jake (age 3) tied with a rope around his body and hitched to a stump to keep him from getting burned as she picked up the brush and burned it.

  Notes for GEORGE EVANDER CARPENTER:
George and his wife, known as Maranda, moved to Caro from Goodrich in 1878 to homestead a farm as did his brother Amos Orton. The two farms were a mile from each other. In 1914, George and Maranda sold the farm to William and Luella Carpenter and moved into town.

According to Art Coffee, The Reminder, October 20, 1966, before George moved to Caro he had time to build the big house in Goodrich that later burned down. Flora remembers him as a musician, playing the violin and his wife the organ. He loved playing at dances so much he built a small ballroom on the second floor of the house.

Kathern Faner Lobban recalls that George helped to remodel the house, not build it. That it did have a ballroom and that George played frequently. George played all over the county. The ballroom was located in the cupola.

3. JACOB DENTON4 CARPENTER (WILLIAM3, GEORGE2, GEORGE1) was born June 28, 1834 in Clarington, Orleans County, New York37, and died 190338. He married MARY ELIZABETH HOSLER39 February 20, 185640. She was born 183941, and died Unknown.

Notes for J
ACOB DENTON CARPENTER:
Jake was a Civil War veteran. Served in Company B, 1st Engineers and Mechanics. Discharged, Nashville Tenn., September 22, 1865. He was remembered as opinionated and argumentative. He married and farmed in Burton Twp. He would visit his brother Bill, Jr. and crow about his flat farm land being far superior to Bill's hilly farm. Bill's wife got fed up one day: "Jacob, you are welcome at our house any time, but when you set foot under my table you've got to quit arguing all the time. I work hard getting up a meal for this bunch, and I am not going to have you spoil it by dominating all the talk." Jacob said, " Why, I'm sorry Kate; I didn't realize what I was doing, and will never do it again." Flora said he never did!

Carpenter family bible in possession of Kathryn Faner Lobban lists Jacob's place of birth as Clarington, Orleans County, NY while his father lived in Niagara County according to the family history.
